I don't think the financial cost is the issue here (if you can pay it, that's fine) but what about the cost to the environment?!!! It seems plain selfish to me to dress in summer clothes and have the heating on at full blast.

we are running out of oil - tanker cnt get here - so heating only 2 hrs a day to preserve oil - we do have one open fire and lots of wood - so that is something!!

It's people like him contribute to global warming!

I'm with Luckygirl on this subject. Putting on extra layers whilst at home in the winter makes total sense to me. My life-long drive to be environmentally aware and responsible is part of who I am. I often fail in this but I keep trying and I wish others would as this world is the only one we have!

For the first time ever I’ve got the heating on day and night but on the lowest setting. The house normally retains the heat well but I’m in an exposed spot in the direct firing line of the beast from the east.

If you wear all those clothes indoors, WHAT do you wear to go out? I'm with your husband on this. I wear trousers and t-shirt in the house, and so does my husband. Our heating is on from 6.30am - 10pm, at 21 degrees. The last few nights, it's been on all night, on 19 degrees. I pay so much a month (Direct Debit) to the energy company, and I'll deal with any extra to pay, when I get the next bill.

It is a man thing. T shirts round the house. I have been feeling cold all week in jumper plus fleece plus wooden carry, and still had cold hands

Those of you who are over 65 (or even if younger you have respiratory/circulatory problems) should keep your bedroom heated to 18 degrees at night. It's no use being tucked up in a warm bed if you're breathing cold air - you will put yourself at significantly greater risks of strokes, bronchitis, pneumonia.
You could just have a thermostatically-controlled electric radiator in your bedroom.

It must be a bloke thing because my OH does exactly the same! I really object to spending so much on heating so I wrap up but as soon as he comes in the heating goes on full and he sits with no socks on and a tee shirt then complains about the cold. I get cross too

Well I am a man and I like to layer up well with thermals. I also use a single duvet in the sitting room. I enjoy being warm but I do not need the heating on full blast either.
To be honest using the single duvet I don't feel cold at all.
Why run up a big bill for no good reason. I never go cold either .

Sorry to hear that you alone are paying the energy bill.

Discuss with your beloved Hubby how best to improve your home's insulation so your monthly energy bill is less than £50pm on average throughout the year.

You may also need to switch energy provider to achieve this. I can heartily recommend voltzapp.org for easily comparing and choosing based on service, contract length and price.

I used to work with 2 blokes like this - one my age, one in his 20s. Both refused to wear anything but a thin shirt or T shirt even in the depths of winter. And we had the general public in and out all day (little local library) letting cold air in, so heating had to be on high for the shirt-only pair.

Whilst the general public, who naturally came in with their coats on, would say it was sweltering inside!

I used to threaten the two of them with knitting them the sort of horrible jumper their old great auntie Mabel might have made them, and making them wear them, but somehow it never did happen...

I hate wearing clothes when I don't have to so today is a nothing but a dressing gown day. It's lightweight cotton. I have bare feet. The heating is set at 15 for the pipes rather than for me. About an hour ago I had to open the back door for a few minutes because it was too hot.

15 degrees is below the acceptable temperature for the workplace and a bedroom should not be below 18 degrees.

Mines just been out to inspect the bird feeder station wearing his all weather slippers... we have 3inches of snow out there.

Its a man thing. At this moment we have the front door open because my son and his partner who lodged with us are moving out. They are taking stuff out the front to the cars. No heating on in the house. No ponit. Hubby has actually put a jumper on because of this. I always have a jumper on. Wait until the door is shut and we are here alone. Moan, moan, moan.

I swear by M & S thermals: long-sleeved top and longjohns under jeans, thick jumper and socks.
Heating never higher than 18 degrees, usually off by early afternoon, but I do have an old but very efficient gas fire (the sort Homes under the Hammer order must be ripped out immediately) for afternoon and evening.
No heating at night, but two thin duvets, throw, brilliant cashmere bedsocks and a cat.

We have underfloor heating, and it's recommended that we keep it on 24/7 at 22deg in the living areas and 19deg in the bedrooms and bathrooms

We have underfloor heating in our conservatory. The first Winter we had it, we ran it most days. Our electricity bill doubled . So now we have an oil filled radiator supplemented by a fan heater as required. Bills are back to sustainable levels.

I'm always cold - I wear several layers, socks, jeans or thick jumpers and fur lined leggings/tights. By mid afternoon the heating has gone down to 16 deg and I have to put my slanket on as I'm sitting at the computer working all day. My right hand is always cold using the mouse so I have a USB plug in heated mouse mat which helps a bit although I have worked in fingerless gloves too. The heating is set to 21 deg 5am to 12 and then comes back up again at 4pm to 10. I sleep in fleece bedding so am warm during the night. My husband is usually hot although even he complains he's cold if sitting and will go and put another jumper on. I think it's difficult if couples have different internal thermometers and perhaps a bit of compromise is needed on both parts.

We keep GCH on during day and also as fire in lounge as well. I can't stand the GCH on overnight though as it dries out the air. We switch it off just before going to bed. We love leccy blanky though. Talk to your dh and tell him you are a bit worried about the expense and see if he will agree to switch it down 1 degree during day and off at night.
