How to avoid falling ( allegedly)

,,my H lit the log burner earlier,I kept shouting from the kitchen that there was an awful smell,it was making me cough etc,he shouted back that there was no smell(he's no sense of smell! ) I went into the living room and aaagh there was what was once a huge fat candle melted all over the burner,it stunk..he'd moved it off the hearth whilst lighting the burner,,I looked at the 'poker' but decided no I don't want to go to jail..aaagh

No, I definitely wouldn't advise him to do it Mapleleaf.
However, he's overwintered in Norway with temperatures of up to -40°C, his winter sleeping bag is good for -10°C - and he truly is an adventurer with a good track record of keeping safe; he's cycled solo to the Arctic Circle in the recent past.
Me? I like to sit by a warm fire and watch the snowflakes falling with a cup of hot tea in my hand. Him? He set off for site visits this morning with his skis and sleeping bag in the car, plus an emergency pack - and was extremely disappointed to have to turn back because none of his colleagues would risk it and the meetings were cancelled.

I wouldn't advise him to do that - the cold is ferocious!

Well the snow has finally caught up with us here in my little corner of Devon and the cold is ferocious. I've had lots of worried people contacting me about the homeless people we're working with (they's kindly folk round these 'ere parts) and am happy to report that the council's Severe Emergency Weather Protocol means that everybody who wants one has a warm bed tonight. Only one young chap has declined and, along with The Wonderful Man and a colleague, I've have sorted him out warm shelter, plenty of food and the means to cook it - and a visit to his GP.

So, The Wonderful Man has decided a 'snow adventure' is called for and has decided to camp out on the local moor tonight!! I love that he's still a boy at heart, but I've suggested he takes the dog for additional warmth.

We're not! - I feel quite deprived as the forecast led us to believe it would be much more interesting than this bit of fine snow.

Candles, wood burner are all ready. Brandy bottle out of the cupboard. I,m feeling very smug. The old lady from the coach house. will come to us if we loose power. The dogs are all sorted so we are all sorted. I wish you all a safe and warm next few days.

Somebody’s happy - his face is normally all black, but he’s been using his nose and muzzle as a snow plough.

And, by the way, my DD measured the depth of the snow, we had 57 cm this morning. It's been snowing on and off since so it's probably a bit deeper now.

There was a call out on our local radio station for volunteers with a 4x4 to help get hospital staff into work. they were making provisions for them to sleep there if necessary too.

DH has just been to dig our car out of the snow. He was struggling, when along came a snow plough and a farmer on a tractor. They stopped and pulled the car out, he was very grateful. Here are some photos. One from yesterday, and one from this morning. My icicles are growing.

I'm grateful to be retired and only have to go out occasionally in this weather. There was a nurse on TV this morning who had walked 10 miles into work to make sure her patients were cared for. She said there were several others who had walked too and were going to stay at the hospital overnight. Bless them

Well us Geordies are made of stern stuff. I had to reverse out of my street this morning (car wouldn't budge forwards) After literally digging the car out, I crawled the 5 miles to work in 2nd gear, with very poor visibility and made it in one piece. But looking outside the snow is falling quite heavily again and I may have to dig the car out again to get home. Anyway the wages are done (which is the main thing) and I might try and head off a bit earlier than normal.

I've just posted on another thread about how bad it is here in the West Mids today. It is only snowing lightly and there isn't much on the ground but the wind is horrendous. It is blowing the snow on the ground up into the air in wafts and the noise from the wind is quite scary. We have to go out soon!

I'm in London and it's been around 5cm deep here since Tuesday. I won't go out until it melts as I'm much too scared of falling over and I hate being that cold. All my outings this week have been cancelled, partly because the trains are bad. I don't remember when we last had snow lasting this long.

I'm in east London. It's not too bad but I'm also wishing I had some usable wellies rather than the damp ones in the shed full of cobwebs and spiders.

DD and I have just returned from a trip to Aldi for urgent supplies......Just in case.

The normally packed car park with ridiculously narrow bays was almost empty so it was a luxury to park across the white lines creating the same space as a disabled one!

The shelves were quite well stocked - apart from the booze aisle. We have our priorities right in the fens!!!!
I asked one of the stackers if there were any boxes of wine out the back (no harm in hoping) He thought about it hard for a while then said, 'Do you mean wine comes in boxes?'

Poor lad has obviously had a sheltered upbringing.

Probably should put in AIBU but just a quick vent about snow shovelling! We're at the bottom of a steep cul de sac.Everyone very nice and neighbourly.I've been out twice to grit ,and others have shovelled tracks but basically no one is going anywhere today as it's all covered again and worse.Yet again the man from the house diagonally opposite the top of our cul de sac has cleared his very wide drive,and rather than piling snow either side of his drive,still leaving loads of room for a car,has shovelled it across the road and piled a huge amount on the pavement. Now I know the pavements are well and truly covered at the moment, but with freezing conditions for days this will turn into a huge mound of ice.He does it I'm sure because he hates anyone parking there,even though it's a wide road and he can easily swing into his drive.Very occasionally myself or neighbours leave a vehicle at the top if it's very icy and we've absolute got to get out. We pull forward so we aren't directly opposite his drive,or making exiting our cul de sac tricky.More than once he's come out and had a go,and even in good weather I've seen him tell delivery drivers etc not to park there as he can't guarantee he won't hit their vehicle and they should not park there.Just annoyed me as I walked past him on the way to the shop.Fortunately most people out and about seem considerate to others,and looking out for each other.Grr !

We have a moderate covering of snow here today and everything is very quiet and the sky is a strange colour.
A blizzard is forecast for later. I feel completely isolated.
Luckily I'm well stocked up with food etc.
