What would I find?
Describe how your kitchen is at this very moment.

Tidy? Chaos? Half decorated? Wonderfully stylish? Comfortingly worn?
Full of delicious cooking /baking aromas?
Full of Grandchildren?
Full of dogs/cats?
Full of retired husband?

Mine is what is nowadays I suppose called "minimilistic".
I cannot bear anything except the kettle and toaster on the worktops.
I move anything anyone puts down in there. Even car keys put down when someone just arrived .

Hence the visiting/inspecting Gransnetters would find it very tidy but oddly empty.

You would think I owned no kitchen equipment at all, it's all cleverly madly obsessively stashed in cupboards.

Not always the kitchen cupboards either.

No room for table or chairs in our kitchen, so you’d be ushered past into the living room. Kitchen currently has 2baking trays holding bread rolls proving, ready to bake. DH has just made us soup for lunch, but washes up as he goes along. So only the pot waiting to be washed. Don’t look too closely, the clutter would horrify lots of you. Also mind the dog bowls on the floor!

Great thread! My small kitchen was new last year and I've tried to 'hide' as many gadgets as I can but the surfaces still hold the kettle, toaster, canisters, coffee machine and a knife block. I have a small table so visitors would be welcome to sit round it but it has to be pulled out to accommodate 4 people and as I don't cook we'd have to have a KitKat to eat. The windowsill houses my collection of owls with battery lights in them and two lanterns with battery candles. The utility room is a similar size so the worktop in there is home to my halogen oven, a multi-function microwave, a dragon holding a bottle of wine and the cats' water fountain. The small trolley holds the other coffee machine (result of selling second property we have 2 of many things!). I try to keep it all pristine but at the moment the floors need sweeping and the gloss cabinets probably need polishing but anyone would be most welcome as we rarely have visitors grin

No clutter in my kitchen. It was New last. Year and we have loads of storage space. Fruit bowl out and a couple of pretty canisters. No kettle out as we don’t have one. We have a boiling water tap. I was sceptical at first but it’s brilliant.
Of course Gransnetters would be welcome, ( well most of them).

You could comfort me if you did, as DGC has just left. Mine now looks hastily wiped round but you would still feel mashed potato clinging to the back of the fridge handle I suspect, lol.

My kitchen is clean but very cluttered
If I had more cupboards it wouldn't be. And worktop space.

I actually cleaned my oven this morning, so all in all I'm fairly satisfied with it,

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou
I am a neat freak and like everything in it's place - keeps life simpler,so the stress is building since he retired 5 years ago as he's here practically all the time. I feel it's make or break time now as our precious first grand baby is on the way and while I'm busy making beautiful things for the nursery there's no way I'd let a baby near that kitchen

My kitchen is so tiny that if I stand in the middle I can just about reach everything, so if you walked into mine you would have to be the only person in there.

BBbevan Thu 22-Feb-18 15:02:26

Chaos. The walls have numerous different patches of paint as we try to decide what colour ( think it might be Littlegreene Thai Sapphire ) No shelves so canisters etc stacked on worktop. Tiles coming off at the weekend. Yes we are having a new kitchen.
But tonight's dinner is nearly prepared, oh and the dishwasher is on. But everyone would be welcome. It's not the place it's the people.

stevej4491 Thu 22-Feb-18 15:09:13

Grandma2213 I think you've just described my kitchen to a T.

kittylester Thu 22-Feb-18 15:10:11

gloribird, I think you are on the wrong thread and we have members who are male. Maybe you'd like to contact GNHQ and talk to them about placing this correctly.

goldengirl Thu 22-Feb-18 15:27:37

Clutter. The odd spill [DH made us a cup of tea - he makes a very good cuppa]. Ketchup sachets - in case they're needed! Bread board, basket of fruit, kitchen equipment I just can't do without. The last slice of cake. And a muddy floor from the GC.............

GabriellaG Thu 22-Feb-18 15:32:25

maddyone

Sounds busy and interesting. A family kitchen full of life.

Nanny41 Thu 22-Feb-18 15:34:02

gmelon I am exactly the same, only the toaster and the kettle on show, I hate having things all over the place and tidy things away as soon as they appear. It always looks tidy, in fact people must think it looks boring/ sterile, but anyone is welcome to pop in any time!

Theoddbird Thu 22-Feb-18 16:27:14

I live on a narrow boat...very little space. Nowhere to store veg... Cluttered to say the least....sighs New kitchen in planning stage...I will have a place for my veg....hahaha

Where to start? I love my kitchen! Lots of wood! (floors and cabinetry) to give it warmth. The stainless steel appliances are the counterbalance which brings it up to date. I also love minimalism but that is an impossible dream, because my hubby loves his gadgets even more than he loves to bake.

There's plenty of storage but I keep pots and pans hanging over the center aisle and a bakers rack full of essentials so hubby doesn't have to rifle through drawers and cabinets every time he needs a strainer, a pot holder or the French press.

What does it look like right now? Breakfast dishes are in the sink and my laptop is parked on the center aisle between the sugar bowl and today's mail.

So, depending on the current standard, I would write it up as 'user friendly' which is diametrically opposed to 'colossal mess'. The latter is what happens when company is coming and I'm the one who has to cook! roastchicken cupcake wine

We now have a large kitchen with an attached sitting/dining room. I'd welcome you in there and you could plonk yourselves down on the sofa or chose a comfy chair, or sit at the table if you prefer to be upright for a cuppa and biscuits. The table has a pale yellow oilcloth covering it. Between us the man and I clear/clean the kitchen as we go so its always a nice place to gather. The radio would be on, the cat might be occupying a chair and there'd be a half done crossword or sudoku puzzle in the paper on the table for you to finish. You could look at family photos on the shelves and a really eclectic assortment of paintings and photos on the walls. We decided we'd have a hotch-potch of all sorts of framed stuff from both our former homes on the walls when we co habited. There are plants in terracotta pots on the kitchen windowsill and a bunch of daffodils and a big set of old fashioned scales with brass weights in the dining part. Purely decorative dust collectors. You'll be able to see the kitchen from your chairs...and the worktops contain the microwave, cafetiere, kettle, tea and coffee jars, fruit bowls, toaster and shelves above for lovely bits of old china we've picked up over the years. A rack with hooks hangs from the ceiling and we have an assortment of pretty jugs hanging up there. The big Belfast sink is clear of crockery as him indoors tends to load the dishwasher as he goes. The teapot, under a cosy would still be warm from the last brew we made. The teapot rarely gets cold! grin You'd all be made very welcome.

Since having a new kitchen last summer, it`s never looked so clean and tidy. One worktop has a tray with kettle and teapot on it, and chopping board propped against the wall, plus kitchen roll on holder. On the window are a radio and photos, opposite worktop has the microwave and my baby Buddha statue. On the floor is the cat litter tray, because there`s nowhere else it can go.

Helenlouise3 Thu 22-Feb-18 18:45:12

We've just got back from a few days break yesterday and have spent the day in town today. My kitchen table holds a new photo frame which will house 9 pics of my grandchildren, 2 bonnets and accessories with which to decorate them for Easter, a large empty vase -waiting for fresh flowers a handbag, a hat and a pair of gloves!! On my work tops I have a bread bin, a kettle, a fruit stand, a coffee machine and a contented goldfish, which hubby thought I'd love for my 60th birthday?? Thank goodness I have a big kitchen.

Jalima1108 Thu 22-Feb-18 19:16:01

I've been out all day with the DGC and DH has been Kitchen Man so I will not invite anyone in at the moment, sorry. He's even clearing up his own mess from cooking smile

Saggi Thu 22-Feb-18 19:20:18

My kitchen was new 9 months ago and within 3 days my hubby had 'cleaned' the stainless Steel hob with a wire scoured!!!! I raged for a week!!! He thought i was gonna say "you don't have to do the washing up darling",.... but I wasn't falling for it. Old him that if there were anymore 'accidents' I would order a new whatever and charge it to him!!! Sorted. My kitchen is cleanish.... although it is minimalist! Don't care if visitors approve or not! It is what it is!!

Jalima1108 Thu 22-Feb-18 19:51:04

Someone upthread said theirs was a 'working kitchen'

I like the sound of that; mine is a clean 'working kitchen'! No junk (well, not much) but toaster, kettle, food processor etc are all out on the work surfaces as I couldn't fiond room in the cupboards which are full of too much essential junk stuff.

HillyN Thu 22-Feb-18 21:42:55

Don't come this evening, please! Normally my kitchen is fairly clean and tidy (except for the bit where DH keeps his stuff) but we've been minding our 9 month-old DGS all day and when DD came to pick him up she ended up staying for tea and now I'm too tired to clear up and anyway I'm watching 'Death in Paradise'. Sorry- maybe tomorrow? I'll make a point of moving the crate of drama props, currently in front of the oven, back to the loft first thing. blush

mcem Fri 23-Feb-18 08:31:58

I've enjoyed reading about all the kitchens and although I don't spend hours in mine ( not an enthusiastic cook) I do quite like it. How about letting us see some of these kitchens by posting a pic?
I don't normally have crockery stacked on the cooker but have been cleaning cupboards and this is the last batch to go onto a high shelf. Plinths are on the floor as they've to be cut and refitted. All the walls out of sight are white not red.

felice Fri 23-Feb-18 09:41:22

Surprisingly my SIL giving it a very good clean, including all the places I cannot reach. He has a couple of days of and is getting under DDs feet so she sent him downstairs. No complaints from me.
