Have you checked the long term weather forecast?

Im on east coast so brrrr. Its cold at the best of times do goodness knows what to expect
Ive got my fatballs and seeds for my babies in garden and my indoor babies are well provided for so thats all i care about apary from er having to work outdoors?

In 1963 my OH was riding his Lambretta when he hit black ice and skidded. He came off and wrenched muscles in his chest but somehow managed to get back on and ride it the rest of the way to the university to sit his exam.

Afterwards he went to a doctor who gave him a medical certificate he could use if he failed. Fortunately he passed so it was never needed but the chest muscles never completely recovered.

I don't know why I was not riding pillion that day, because he usually gave me a lift, but we will never know whether or not the accident would have happened if he'd had the extra balast on the back of his scooter.

MrsEggy, I remember that year. We lived in the country and only three of us turned up at school. Head teacher lived in cottage next door. All the bottles of milk frozen and left by coal fire with fire guard to defrost.

Erring on side of caution and stocked up in food also took tins over daughters, she does have a shop delivery tomorrow, so the should be fine.
My biggest worry is her partner has to drive back to work in London on Tuesday evening and is then away for 9 days. So DD on her own with 2 little ones
I'm sure will all be OK, what will be -will be.

What's making me anxious is the waiting.
Today feels like the lull before the storm

We have had great time at a local nature reserve with DD, her partner and DGSs.
But now back to checking the weather reports.

It's been a beautiful sunny day here in the West Midlands but it's now getting very cold. DH has just gone to light the woodburner. I went out to inspect the garden a couple of hours ago. There is lots going on out there so I hope a cold spell doesn't have too much of an adverse effect. Thursday is the first day of Spring.

Perhaps booking a few days in the Lake District wasn't my best idea!❄️

My mum put thermogene on my chest at night when I had a cough, but I didn't have to live in it!

I'm a little short of groceries for a week but I thought if I've got rice and a few potatoes, and flour, eggs & milk (pancakes maybe) I'll be OK. Although Sainsburys is just across the road, to get there is a major struggle for me. I'll just make do. Can't see myself using mobility scooter in the next few minutes even though the sun is brilliant. Lazy of what!

In 1947 (I was 9) we walked to school, running on the top of piles of snow shovelled to the side of the road. No central heating, only one small fire in the house, and coal was rationed. Frost flowers on the inside of windows, and toothbrushes froze. The big boys across the road made an igloo from the frozen snow - we survived!

In the 1950's when it snowed we still had to walk to school - no days off then. All the wet coats hanging in the lobbies where the huge black hooks stuck out on both sides. We were tougher then

Blimey! that goose grease and wadding sounds awful. I bet your clothes had to be a size larger to cover it all.

As a veteran of the 1963 freeze, I'm quite amused at the panic generated by the prospect of a couple of weeks below zero. I had to go by train into Edinburgh every day - Dip Ed classes - and remember the enormous icicles, the size of organ pipes, along the rail track. Between the training college and the University we had to walk up a steep and very icy slope which luckily had a handrail. I had a red duffel coat with a fleecy lining which stood me in very good stead. I don't remember the country grinding to a halt. Snow ploughs created great walls of snow along the roads.

We were hoping to escape the icy blasts by leaving for Sri Lanka on Wednesday, but "the best laid plans", have resulted in my breaking my ankle yesterday. So now I'm hopping mad! Liberty bodices: remember them all too well, especially those inexplicable rubbery bits. Can't see my granddaughter agreeing to wear one.

... and the meters have just been read, so can crank the heating up now and not worry about the bills. For a while anyway.

My OH watched the forecast then demanded I get on the iPad and get us out of here. I was instructed not to move from the sofa until that was accomplished.
So next week I'll be cruising on the Nile like Cleopatra and the week after snorkelling amongst the tropical reefs on the Red Sea.
Costs less than a fortnight in Bridlington!

Well, I've started putting my nightie on the bathroom radiator an hour before bedtime. Don't want cold kidneys in the night...

I well remember 1963, I was working as a nurse and getting up at silly o'clock, traipsing through the snow to get a bus to work. Never missed a shift and was never late, nowadays a few flakes of snow and the country grinds to a halt.
I think liberty bodices were a very good idea, the walk to school in the winter was a very cold one.

It seems to be 'the thing' now for forecasters to dramatise the weather...do they do it to take our minds off other issues!!... We've probably,all of us lived through snow,cold,ice,wind lots of times..but the media just seem to want to incite panic!....

It was a beautiful day in SWWales yesterday. I was working outside and had to take my coat off, it was so warm in the sun. But it is not going to last. I hope all you GNers in the path of ' The Beast' don't get snowed in and manage alright. Let's hope it is not as bad as predicted and doesn't last long

I can't believe we have booked a lodge holiday in South Devon next week with our daughter's dog!
We live in South West Devon, Willow - it's bitterly cold here at the moment, but I will be surprised if we get any more than a few flurries of snow. I hope I'm not proved wrong!
Oh and we have booked a week in North Cornwall next week, also with our daughter's dog - and our daughter and granddaughter. We're hoping we don't get snowed in down there, or for that matter, that snow doesn't prevent our journey there. When 'winter showers' are forecast for the South West, it's usually worse in Cornwall .

I’m right on the east coast-practically in the North Sea - so will be first to welcome the Beast! Have a Sainsbury’s delivery booked for tomorrow so can batten down the hatches if needs be.

I am amused by the Beast From the East. What's next - the Pest From the West?

What is all the fuss about....its cold weather and snow!

I remember going down to Wales in that 63/64 winter and there was still snow banked up at the sides of the roads in April.
Also remember the inappropriately named liberty bodices - freedom was the last thing they offered.
