Oh an I meant to say, charity shops always smell ‘old’. Assumed it was just because the clothes and books are old.

Yes gransnet, do not go down this incredibly annoying pop-up route. Or you may lose subscribers. Another forum I’m on tried it and soon had to lose it as it hacked off so many people.

I donate all my unwanted clothes to charity. I make sure they are clean before they go even if they have to go for rags. The charity shops in our area are excellenct no bad smells. So we are lucky. There are so many of them competing for business it is so sad. Amazon

Annoying pop up! Please sort it Gransnet - I keep this separate from Facebook as any problems I print sometimes involve facebook friends.

I can’t believe that no one at HQ has yet commented! They are normally quick off the mark with posts when relevant. Perhaps they are all too red faced to talk to us about the wretched pop ups. It can’t be a revenue thing can it? If so, they are rapidly losing their audience.

I was thinking maybe steams 'sets' the pong into the fabric?

I do know the smell you mean, though, and it would certainly put me off buying anything.

All our items are steamed (I think this is done in every charity shop these days?) - I think this is not exactly the same as cleaning/washing, but it seems to work.

Most charity shops here are spotless and smell lovely. Only one has a volunteer with a bo problem which may put people off but how can they tell him?

PLEASE REMOVE THE POP-UP I will not be forced to join Facebook and would be sad to give up Gransnet!

Ive already mentioned this on shampoo thread. Can't access top two threads on my phone. Glad it's not only me. I've complained to GN HQ and they say they'll see what they can do about it!!!!! We'll see too.

Our local charity shops are a real credit to the staff - one in particular has such good window dressing that you might think it was an exclusive department store. However, one shop had such a revolting stench of sweat and stale odour that I wouldn't go in; someone told me later that it was the manager who smelled so badly and if you went in when he was off duty the shop was fine!

Charity shops used to sell musty. I don’t know if the poorer ones still smell but where I volunteer the clothes must be spotless, steamed with bottled water and discarded if there’s a thread pulled or a loose button.
We get lots of very good expensive brands so not sold at jumble sale prices. I haven’t bought any new clothes for years and am wearing a cashmere jumper and Monsoon trousers.

I bought a lovely leather coat from a charity shop, got it home , put it in the spare room on the bed, went in the next day and the smell of fags was horrendous! Hadn't noticed it at all in the shop or in car on way home, I hung it in the garage abd outside on fine days and it still smelled awful.. In the end I put it in a strong bin bag with some cotton wool soaked in pure lavender oil.. It worked a treat... No faggy smell after a week... I suppose you could use any other essentual oil if you didn't like lavender. GLAD ITS NOT JUST ME HATING THE POP-UP!

The Facebook pop up is very annoying. Can't the moderators do something to get rid of it? I'm just going to try the bottom up thingy as suggested!

Back to the question about funny smells. I wash everything and sometimes the smell doesn't go first time. I recently bought a lovely leather handbag. Only when I got it home I realised it smelt musty. I've turned the lining inside out and left it in the fresh air. So far it's still there.

I volunteer in a charity shop & have done for many years. We are always being told that our shop does not look or smell like a charity shop. maybe because our first Manager & our present Manager was/is very picky about what is put on our shop floor. If something has even a slight smell it is ragged as is anything that does not look good enough. So perhaps it is only certain shops that have that smell!
