Charity shop clothes

Has anybody else noticed the strange smell (not a 'dirty' smell) that charity shop clothes have? I've discovered today - perhaps I'm a bit slow on the uptake - that it's the steaming machine that they 'iron' the clothes with. Is there any way of getting rid of the smell? Even washing seems to leave it behind a bit.

Can't stand the pop-ups on Gransnet - especially when I am already signed up to it, and also to Facebook. Note to Gransnet Admin - Just stop doing this !!!

There’s a Primart in the town near where I live that has that same smell! I have been in other Primarts which don’t smell so in their case it isn’t the clothes themselves.

i got that popup on the first item on the digest - thankfully all the others worked normally.

I have never joined Facebook (or any other social media) and never will. Please remove the links for liking Gransnet, or I will stop liking it!

It's driving me round the bend too...thought it was my computer but obviously not. Gransnet, please sort out.

Yes. The pop up is extremely annoying. Can’t read the thread. Big pain.

Daisyboots Tue 20-Feb-18 13:29:15

Also GN are now sharing all the topics they send by email on their page. So be very careful when it comes to posting anything personal. Not a positive move by GN. sad

grannytotwins Tue 20-Feb-18 13:34:11

I even liked GN in FB, but the pop up is still there.

Nanny41 Tue 20-Feb-18 13:35:14

Only just seen the Facebook pop-up today, cant get rid of the first one to be able to read the thread, whats it all about? and the SHARE at the end of every headline very annoying!

jane1956 Tue 20-Feb-18 13:52:59

NannaM Tue 20-Feb-18 14:16:31

RE POP UP - I'm starting a new thread. Please add comments.

The 'Like Facebook' thing is extremely irritating. I shall not bother with Gransnet again if it continues.

Urmstongran Tue 20-Feb-18 14:48:50

I too cannot access the first topic. How annoying! And I don’t ‘do’ FB so it’s not as if I could ‘like’ it to make it go away!

Bamm Tue 20-Feb-18 15:21:55

GET THAT POP UP AWAY !

Rosina Tue 20-Feb-18 15:22:03

Me too! I can't access the first topic - why is this happening? It's been happening only today - who has inflicted this irritation on us?

Aepgirl Tue 20-Feb-18 15:22:34

Thank you all for your replies regarding 'smelly garments from charity shops'. Glad it's not just me. Why do people insist on using Febreze - it only masks the original smell, but then its own smell lingers.

As to the pop-up, it's even preventing me from looking at some posts. Please Gransnet, get rid of it.

Bamm Tue 20-Feb-18 15:23:44

I don't like the smell in Charity shops either!

Bamm Tue 20-Feb-18 15:25:06

I want to know why there is no hope for the first poster!

BlueBelle Tue 20-Feb-18 15:40:27

I m not getting any pop ups of FB messages Why??
The charity shop I work in doesn’t smell ( some of the public do though and not just in charity shops) and I ve always bought from charity shops why not I got a fantastic River Island winter coat for £5 and a pair of Elle boots same price I m kitted out

TillyWhiz Tue 20-Feb-18 15:40:56

I find some charity shops worse than others - most local ones are OK, seems to be the ones in the larget towns that smell more!

Read the threads from bottom subject to top as suggested and they opened properly except for the top one which has such an enticing title!

tubbygran Tue 20-Feb-18 15:54:19

Yes, blueskies very irritating! I’m not on Facebook!

Albangirl14 Tue 20-Feb-18 16:06:46

yes very annoying!

SillyNanny321 Tue 20-Feb-18 16:07:03

I volunteer in a charity shop & have done for many years. We are always being told that our shop does not look or smell like a charity shop. maybe because our first Manager & our present Manager was/is very picky about what is put on our shop floor. If something has even a slight smell it is ragged as is anything that does not look good enough. So perhaps it is only certain shops that have that smell!

Indigoblue Tue 20-Feb-18 16:07:23

Blueskies - I've worked up then down, still it pops up on the first thread. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE STOP IT!

inishowen Tue 20-Feb-18 16:20:43

Really annoyed about the pop up. I'm not going to "like" something on facebook that I haven't even read yet. Please gransnet stop doing that!

Back to the question about funny smells. I wash everything and sometimes the smell doesn't go first time. I recently bought a lovely leather handbag. Only when I got it home I realised it smelt musty. I've turned the lining inside out and left it in the fresh air. So far it's still there.
