Do you have an afternoon nap?

I usually have a good nights sleep, but around 3pm I start feeling very tired. Do you take a nap if that happens? I usually go and do something else to keep myself going. I'm sure if I had a nap I would probably be awake half the night.
I'm 74.

I love my afternoon nap. I get up early (5ish) so go to sleep on the sofa for about 20 minutes and that keeps me going until bedtime. I’m usually awake for an hour or more in the night so get about 7 hours sleep, which is plenty as I’m not wildly active now.

I do have a 30 minute to one hour nap in my comfy armchair after lunch most days. I actually find that when I do not have this, for any reason, I have more difficulty in getting to sleep at night - presumably because I am overtired. Enjoy my afternoon power nap. If I do not have this, will just fall asleep later in afternoon/early evening. If I am driving any distance, I pull into Service station car park, put my drivers seat back, put light cover over myself and have a half an hour power nap. Works wonders. Then a cup of black coffee and I am wide awake for rest of drive.

I wake around 6am having gone to be around 10pm but I still occasionally have a nap in the afternoon if I feel so inclined. DH does it too but he sets his alarm to ensure he doesn't over do it!!!

I never sleep in day. I am on the go most of day. I can get to sleep but seem to wake at about 5m every mornig. I do wish i could sleep on. Do any of you wake so early?

I have always had an energy lull at about four in the afternoon. It was hell when I taught and had a family at home. Now, retired, I have an upright forty winks after tea at three thirty. Sometimes I find myself horizontal on the sofa (how does that happen?) and, at weekends, I strangely find myself napping in bed. Bliss.

I often put my head down in the afternoon and I have been known to sleep for up to two hours on the odd occasion and then have no trouble sleeping at night. My. oH also takes. Shorter naps in the afternoon. I just have very low energy levels. Due to a medical condition so why fight it

Getting up so early I do sometimes find myself falling asleep in front of my computer and occasionally have to give in and sit back and let go for 5 minutes (I work from home luckily) - I usually find this is far better than fighting it for ages and feel better for it. My parents always went to sleep mid afternoon and I would often go round to check on them to find them spark out with the back door unlocked!

I sleep terribly at night. Unsurprisingly I'm tired during the day. I try not to sleep during the day for a few reasons. If I fall asleep I can sleep for hours! It's disorienting and leaves my brain foggy and headachey. I will often wake up way past a sensible dinner time. This is no good for my diabetes. On days like these I'd often end up eating a bowl of cereal!!
Then I don't sleep well at night.... at the cycle begins again ?

Well we're just getting over the dreaded flu but we have both been grabbing an hour at some point during the day. If my sleep is disturbed I just read till I feel sleepy again. It's no good getting worked up about it.

Since early retirement in July If it is wet or cold and I am at home alone I sit on sofa to watch TV with blanket over my legs and sometimes just drift off but usually only for 20-30 mins and I awake refreshed. Lovely nap.

I sleep when I'm tired, eat when hungry and drink when thirsty. That says it all. I've always been able to sleep for England but when I was married with children, it was out of the question.
Nowadays, with just p/t proofreading and SAM'S to keep me on my toes, I revel in hot summer afternoons lying on the bed with windows open and falling asleep listening to country sounds. In winter, I have fur throws and a small fire lit and take tea back to bed at 6am to watch the strings of racehorses go to exercise then fall asleep until I wake up, which could be 10am. That's one of many luxuries when living alone.

I think it would be questioned if I had a nap at work...hahaha

David1968 Sat 10-Feb-18 17:04:21

I could very easily nap in the daytime but I try not to do so. And I could represent the UK if there was Olympic sleeping! I loooove a morning lie-in, especially in the winter months.

This morning I felt a bit grim after breakfast so went for a nap at nine-thirty (I woke early). I zonked immediately and woke up again at eleven o'clock feeling a lot better, if somewhat fibroachey.

Oh i love a little 'nanna nap' in the afternoon.I find it one fo the most delightful things about retirement. If all the house hold chores are done, evening meal prepped and i have been out at some point in the morning, why shouldn't I. It is most condusive to these dark, wet, cold winter afternoons. In the summer its a different story, I play green lawn bowls a couple of times a week, take day trips out, work in the garden, too busy to nap so i make the most of them in the winter. Snuggle up on the sofa, turn up the heating, put on the tv or the radio for the afternoon play and away you go!!! smile

My recliner chair has become my ‘afternoon nap’ chair. It is so comfortable that I often nod off for an hour in the afternoon. It doesn’t seem to affect my night time sleep, yet! At the moment I’m recovering from pneumonia and my afternoon nap is lasting a tad longer!

I have a power nap every day and a quite happy to so.

Silverlining47 Sat 10-Feb-18 15:15:56

I have always had the ability to catnap at any time much to the envy of several friends. When my children were small and I was driving them a long distance they would sit quietly in the car when I stopped for 10 minutes sleep.
My parents always had their '5 minutes' sleep after lunch (my father came home for lunch) and so I find it quite natural, and not necessarily age related, to have a 10 minute snooze during the day if I feel like it and wake up refreshed.

JAM56 Sat 10-Feb-18 15:07:21

It's my 65th birthday next Saturday and although I'm very aware I'm fortunate to have made it thus far I'm feeling a bit'old'. Any words of encouragement and inspiration gratefully received.

whitewave Sat 10-Feb-18 14:19:13

I have a nap very, very occasionally and usually in the conservatory laid out flat in the sun reading. I may drift off then

My h does he has arthritis in his neck, he used to fall asleep in the chair until I Googled about living with arthritis. It said you should go to bed for a sleep sleeping in a chair does not help your posture.
I can’t sleep because I wake up feeling quite sickly so I wait till bedtime.

Patticake123 Sat 10-Feb-18 13:17:04

If I’m really tired I’ll catnap for 15 minutes and then my batteries are recharged , I still sleep at night. If I’m honest, when I was working, I would have loved a 15 minutes doze so I don’t think it’s an age thing, it’s something to do with body clock rhythms.

GrannyParker Sat 10-Feb-18 12:19:17

So glad this thread is here, it worries me that come mid afternoon I could happily lay down and fall asleep and I have given in and done it a few times, at 67 I wondered if it was normal. I usually get out with the dog to keep awake, if I do give in I wake up feeling awful.

Lucky to sleep well at night Mrsmopp....I sleep approx. 3/4 hours at night and that not in one go! I try nitro allow myself to nap.... but really don’t think I need that much sleep anymore. It’s been going on 20 years ...tried all the remedies AND some I’ve never heard off. Nothing makes the slightest difference. If I wake about 2.30 in the morning , I’m wide awake , not drowsy or sleepy..... I’m so awake I could quote Pythagorus’ Theorem ....I had to write it out as ‘lines’ punishment once at school!!! I now don’t worry about sleeping. If it comes , it comes, if not I read a book or iron!!
