Loo Roll in Public Toilets

The holders are designed to stop people from stealing a whole roll or two. Believe me, it was very necessary as people did help themselves to whole rolls. I was a cleaner in my student days and you would just not believe the amount of toilet paper that went missing!

I agree the cubicles are often too small and the holders badly placed and difficult to get paper out of.

Even worse in my opinion are the cubicles designed for people on crutches and in wheelchairs, where the toilet paper is hung up somewhere that is completely inaccessible from the actual toilet, which creates appalling difficulties for those who are less mobile.

agree it makes a big bang every time you try to turn it round to find the end so it sounds like you are using lots of it not just the 3 little sheets you finally get out after a struggle and banging noises,

Grandma70s: there is always loo paper on the floor of public loos because if it is a " sit down" job rather than a hover to pee, people line the seat with strips of paper to avoid their bottie coming into contact with a seat others have peed on. This paper the drifts to the floor when the user stands up.

I thought about this thread yesterday when I was scrabbling to try to find the end of the loo paper in one of those large holders at a local cafe/farm shop.
There was only one unisex loo and when I came out there was quite a queue because I'd taken so long.

In my local Morrisons when feeling the need. Went into the cubicle and found the empty wrapper of a large bar of chocolate and a pregnancy testing kit. Wonder if it was for celebration or comfort eating !

Frankly, I've never used public loos (or those on planes, trains or coaches) in decades...about 40+ years. The last ones I remember going to were in Southport when visiting my Gran. There was a jolly lady in a starched white overall, several wooden chairs with cushions, a kettle and tea making stuff and a basket full of small rolled up hand towels. There was a small bowl for 'tips' and an empty basket for used towels - no roller or paper towels and everyone got their own wrapped tiny bar of soap. It was spotless. Nanny told me it closed then reopened. Those were the days.

Was incapable of sitting on a strange loo seat for years after my mother’s brainwashing -“Don’t sit on the seat!”
Dislike loos with doors that have a big gap at the bottom, and sometimes at the top as well.

I hate having to put my handbag on the floor or trying to hold it whilst going about my business. In the new perfect loo we need hooks for handbags where we can reach them safely to get our tissues when the scrabble leads to disappointment.....

Marmight Scrabbling about trying to locate the end of the loo paper drives me mad too. Also, noisy hand dryers that take ages to dry your hands (and are apparently not at all hygienic). Taps are also an initiative test that I frequently fail.

Still in my teens I was on a group tour of Europe with a friend. I remember going into a one toilet loo that had an attendant outside. There wasn’t a waste paper bin and I had a pad to dispose of. I remember standing in from of the sink contemplating what to do with it all wrapped up in loo roll. Leave it on the sink for the lady to see???? ended up putting it in my purse to dispose of later.

I always carried paper bags for such moments, envious. Practical is my middle name .

So much so that many years later when I used a moon cup instead of disposable tampons, I carried a bottle of water so I could give it a second rinse. It got its first rinse over the loo using flush water (which is CLEAN so nobody needs to freak out ).

We have some wonderful Alice in Wonderland toilets in a local restaurant with big glass walls everywhere that people walk into, tiny loos with inward opening doors, and dryers so strong that your hands have huge wrinkles flying around
I haven’t been in the men’s but my grandson tells me that the urinals change colour as you pee into them

I can't bear litter of any kind so if I enter a cubicle where the floor is strewn with toilet paper I clear it up and flush it away. Pity that these fastidious people who can't bear to touch the seat aren't bothered about leaving a mess for others. I have seen people leaving public toilets unaware that there's a long strip of paper stuck to the sole of their shoe. Uggh.

I nearly fell off my chair at the description "Alice in Wonderland toilet"! Those pictures are so easily transposable - you can imagine the foot sticking out under the door and the long neck with the head up near the ceiling visible over the top!

In my earlier post, I didn't mean pieces of paper on the floor, but whole rolls stood in the corner. Makes me shudder at the thought of having to use them!

I don't think I could last for a 13 hour flight! Although I hate using the loos on a plane it is sometimes necessary.

I've just returned on a 23 hour long haul flight. No problem in the loos apart from being a tad small. The cabin crew kept them clean; well, every time I used them the loo paper was folded into a cute wee triangle so
someone must have been on loo duty ?. I certainly couldn't have crossed my legs for that length of time.

I believe(from environmentalists) wipes do not go into the toilet bowl - even if it says so on the pack. Need to dispose of them in a bin. Thanks.

You are absolutely right and it is horrifying to think of the consequences if the sewers in any town or city were to seize up.
This was one near-disaster, there will be more.

WHY are manufacturers allowed to put 'flushable' on these things when clearly they're not?? It should be made very clear that flushable just means they flush down the loo, and NOT that they're biodegradable.

hahaha....this has happened to me so many times. It also happens at work...
