I usually have one or two glasses at the weekend but rarely in the week. I do sometimes feel tempted in the week but as DH rarely drinks I don’t open a bottle for myself.

What about you.

Well, I am joining the reprobates on here! I have a small glass of sherry while watching Eggheads every evening and then OH and I will have a glass of wine each with our dinner. He often partakes at lunchtime as well, but I wait till the evening. At weekends we will have a nightcap before bed, a Cointreau or similar for me and he will have a scotch or a brandy. We are early 70s, and blood tests and organ functions are fine, so why not?

Perhaps that's my problem winterwhite !
I doubt if I drink two bottles of wine in a year ?
We have plenty of wine in the house just rarely open one.

I drink about one glass of wine a week, on average, usually with a Sunday roast. I’m on holiday at the moment and have had one a day, but when DH is working abroad I don’t open a bottle, so it evens out over the year.

I noticed that, when our children were younger, it was usually me that picked ours and others’ children up at the end of their evenings out. When I investigated the reason, it was because the other parents (DH included) had “had a drink”.

Who was it who said that if you abstain from sex, smoking and drinking you don’t live longer, it just feels like it?

I have heard that GPs when they are asking how much a patient drinks, mentally double the answer!
We like a G& T a couple of times a week and drink a bottle or maybe 2 during the rest of the week but only with food. We have a Vacu-Vin pump cork so we usually only have a glass each time and put the bottle away for another time. .My husband doesn't always finish his so, frugal soul that I am, I put the rest in a jar in the fridge and cook with it. I'm nearly 74 and in good health so like Ann sixty and Urmstongran, I'm not going teetotal now. Might switch to Fever Tree sugar free tonic with my gin though to avoid putting on too much weight!

My DH makes our wine ( as do many here). He has a glass every day (more at the weekend). I'm trying to have 2 or 3 days without during the week. Because our wine is homemade and pure it has no additives so you don't get the nasty after effects! Like in France people don't binge drink as much here as wine is part of the culture. Cheers ladies ( and gents)???

OldMeg Tue 06-Feb-18 13:01:24

Actually it won’t affect me as I like a good Californian or Chilean ?

OldMeg Tue 06-Feb-18 12:59:15

FFS GoldenAge let’s keep politics out of this thread at least ??

KatyK Tue 06-Feb-18 12:59:15

I often wonder Urmstongran how much people admit to drinking. I don't mean people on here as they seem such an honest lot smile but people generally. I know several people who, when asked by their GP how much they drink, are economical with the truth.

A recent (2017) study found that drinking red wine, does have health benefits. This confirms several other studies which found that moderate red wine driving is beneficial.

Too much can be destructive to your health, raising your blood pressure and your risk of developing several kinds of cancer. Too little may hold you back from some of the benefits that moderate drinkers enjoy, like lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, mortality and type-2 diabetes.

The amount that’s just right, according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, might be a nightly glass of wine with dinner, especially if you follow a Mediterranean-style diet.

Irrespective of how much wine anyone drinks - one thing's for certain - it will all be increasing in price after Brexit as we leave the Customs Union, and fail simultaneously to negotiate the trade deals elsewhere that Mrs May thinks we will be able to do - so it will be wine from these fair isles !

Noreen3 Tue 06-Feb-18 12:49:13

When my husband was with me,he's now in a care home,we had a drink each evening.I've cut down to just a glass of wine at weekends, and sometimes something mid week, not very often.I can't say I feel any better or lost any weight.I don't know what to think,we often hear of people who live to a good age and have always had a drink each day.

Urmstongran Tue 06-Feb-18 12:48:33

Actually, looking at our posts on this topic it would seem only about 1:5 of us ‘admit’ to drinking above government guidelines. A true reflection? Really?

Urmstongran Tue 06-Feb-18 12:45:42

And I don’t mind opening a bottle (red, white or pink!) ‘just’ for me. Who better haha! C’mon ladeez.... you don’t have to drink it all at one session but if you fancy a glass of wine, even on your own, why ever not? We don’t always want the same things at the same times as others. Why demonise wine this way? I get it, moderation is key, but if you always wait for company when you’d like to enjoy a glass of wine then that’s just going to be a disappointment.

I don't drink alcohol. I haven't for 15 years. It started becoming a problem so I got off that slippery slope.

Didn't like it, only drank it for affect so no great hardship

OldMeg Tue 06-Feb-18 12:39:11

Oddly enough there’s two things I’d never do before 5.00pm and that’s have a drink or turn the TV on ?

Skweek1 Tue 06-Feb-18 12:37:21

I have 2 glasses on Saturday evening with our family meal. There is generally a glass or so left, so may use up during the week and until recently tended to have a wine box in, so could pour a glass for glugging or cooking if I did fancy one. My usual tipple is a tin of Holsten or a Westons cider, which I know are both vegan and may buy a box of Westons rather than the tins, as will last longer The only time I drink during the day is when DS and I go to town to the Wetherspoons, do our shopping and have a pint about once every week or two. Don't tend to drink spirits, fortified wine or liqueurs except at Christmas.

OldMeg Tue 06-Feb-18 12:34:44

I enjoy a glass of red wine most nights and more at weekends.

KatyK Tue 06-Feb-18 12:34:40

Well said Kim19 Every time I have a drink I can hear a little voice in my head saying 'you'll get cancer, liver disease, heart trouble, diabetes, gain weight, get addicted etc'. For goodness sake. I'm doing OK so far. Each to their own.

Mapleleaf Tue 06-Feb-18 12:19:52

I don't drink as much anymore as DH works away during the week and I don't want to open a bottle of wine just for me. Now, we'll open a bottle of wine on a Saturday and Sunday evening to enjoy with our meal. It's strange, really, but I seem to enjoy it more now that I've cut back. Occasionally, we'll have a G & T or other spirit in the afternoon, but not always.
To be honest, I don't miss the mid week bottle we used to share, and I also think I tend to have a better nights sleep. We indulge more on holiday and at Christmas, but even then, not as much as we used to.
I agree with others who have said that a lot of the younger generation tend to get through more alcohol during the week and weekends. A relative of ours treats it like water, especially at weekends. It's a worry, because of the possible hidden dangers that might show up in later life.

Crazygrandma2 Tue 06-Feb-18 12:19:22

annsixty thank goodness for your post - chimes with me completely, unlike all the ones previous to you smile. We have wine as and when we feel like it but also several alcohol free days a week. Everything in moderation is my rule of thumb. I hope I'm still able to enjoy a glass if I'm lucky enough to reach your age flowers

Legs55 Tue 06-Feb-18 12:12:49

I will confess to daily indulgence in the past, I've always enjoyed a drink & DH was a heavy drinker. I do like spirits, used to be whiskey but now more likely to be vodka or gin with tonic.

Now I rarely drink as I'm on a medically restricted driving licence, renewed annually which entails report from GP & Blood results, sometimes an independent medical with blood sample which is sent direct to DVLA. I'm supposed to avoid alcohol with my medication so it's an occasional glass of wine but only if I'm not driving.

I do miss alcohol but I'm very aware that once I start I may not stop, I love Echo Falls, so light & I've discovered a non-alcoholic pear cider.

I have no problem with others drinking when I'm on a soft drink, DM at nearly 89 has a glass of wine Saturday & Sunday also has wine when she goes out for a meal lunch or dinner.

NanTheWiser Tue 06-Feb-18 12:11:08

I shall join all the other daily tipplers, I have a small glass of Rosé every evening with my meal, a bottle lasts me a week. When my husband was alive, we got into the habit of sharing a bottle of red a night, and he would follow that with a brandy, but I decided to cut that out as I felt the effects the next morning.
My first husband was an alcoholic, so I'm well aware of the dangers of drink!
wine !

cornishclio Tue 06-Feb-18 12:08:58

I like wine but am trying to lose weight so I only drink if going out for a meal. It is my birthday this Sunday so DH and I will probably share a bottle with dinner. I sometimes buy a bottle from the supermarket and we share over 3 nights or if my elder daughter is home it lasts for 2 nights. Not done that since Christmas though so had an alcohol free January.

GabriellaG Tue 06-Feb-18 12:00:48

...contd....the taste of alcohol made me feel unwell. I've not had a drink since then and don't miss it.
