New Hull attraction

Such a pity that this was vandalised with paint vq but pleased that someone managed to restore it, and I see that they have put a protective plastic cover over it now. Bankyside great idea . I love Hull.

It would appear that someone didn't like it. It wasn't covered in graffiti like the first reports said. Someone had painted white paint all over it. Common consensus is that it was someone who was offended by it's apparent anti-Brexit theme. I can't see it being the local scallies because they'd have tagged it.

The council have now put perpex over it to protect it in the short term whilst they organise a more permanent form of protection.

It may not be anti-Brexit. It could be a play on the fact that Hull raised it's drawbridge against Charles I. The first action of the Civil War.

Was Charles I the king after whom the town was called Kingston upon Hull? If it was the king's town (granted a burgh by him?), then barring him would be doubly significant.

By the time of Charles I we'd seen through the monarchy and no longer felt the need to defer to it.

Which is why we call it Hull after the river, and not Kingston after the king.

My DH told everyone I was going to Hell when I visited last year, but I dragged him up there afterwards and he had to eat his words because he loved it too. I wonder why Banksy didn't do his pic last year?

It is strange though, that so many people fall at his feet (Banksy) metaphorically speaking, when other ( quite good) art is condemned as graffiti and cleared away.

Only posh people called it Kingston upon Hull. The rest of us just called it Hull, even my relatives who were there from the 1770s, which is as far back as I have been, although the oldest ones I knew were born in 1877 and 1900. They lived in big houses in the Avenues, but always called it Hull.

It wasn't the first action of the civil war vampirequeen but arguably the action that defeated the Royalists. Hull was where the armaments the army needed were stored, offered a port to bring in soldiers and stores and closed it's gates to the king leaving him short of weapons and soldiers.
