Very annoying people

For DH's birthday in August, the children bought us lunch on a local steam railway which, due to one thing and another, we have only just been able to take.

We had a lovely meal and a very nostalgic ride on the line that DH used to get to school when he was a boy even passing close to his house which was on Station Road.

But, one woman on the table next to us had the most annoyingly loud voice possible. It was so loud that it made it impossible for Dh and I to have a conversation of our own. We heard all about her upcoming holidays, the hotels in London where she has had afternoon tea and what she thought of the staff, the latest shows she's been to, the last 4 cruises she went on. And, she continually said 'You know what I mean'.

Towards the end of our meal DH and I were having difficulty keeping a straight face but it did rather spoil DH's birthday treat and we will have to be a bit economical with the truth as far as the children are concerned.

Sorry, rant over, I feel better now.

What sort of people do you find annoying?

I was really annoyed at my grand-daughter's Christmas concert which was held in her nursery class (she is 3 years of age.)
I sat in a row where the first two seats had been "booked". When the woman concerned came to sit down she was huge.
I am a size 14, she spent the whole time sitting with part of her behind on my leg! I just glared at her but did not say anything.
I did wonder why she had n't sat at the end and allowed her husband to sit next to me as he was of normal size.
Anyway, rant over.

Oh Annesixty I do so agree. Those types who think they have the right to criticise how you choose to spend your own money.

You’re very restrained to just grind your teeth though.

Well, if we are on a roll!!

DD3'S Mil who insists that DGD2 is left handed (amongst lots of other traits!) because Uncle Tom is! Forgetting that both me and DD3 are as well.

She also forgets to mention that Uncle Tom is verging on being an alcoholic!!

I could go on and on!!

DBF and I were once in a small Chinese restaurant, the tables were very close together. He has some land with a Chapel on it and had recently had it confirmed for use for green burials.
We were having a quite quiet(he mumbles) tongue in cheek conversation on the most economical use of the land and he suggested putting the coffins in standing up, we then realised there was silence from the 2 Americans sitting next to us, we had heard every word until then, and the horrified looks on their faces has never been forgotten.
We still wonder what they told their friends about the strange people in the Chinese restaurant.

When I meet someone who continually talks about people I don't know (using first names), I continually interrupt them - saying "now who is that - is it Tom's sister's boyfriend" deliberately getting it wrong, they then correct me and carry on until I interrupt again with another inane question - it's funny I don't see those sort of people much any more! grin

Well the well-meaning friend who said “we must do lunch in the new year as you won’t have anybody to do things with” !!
One off my list!
The people who haven’t bothered to acknowledge the carefully chosen (hard back, mint condition, glossy or Folio Society edition) book I gave each with a thank you after Paw died sad
That’s another three.

Get it off your chest Maw I feel so much better for doing so.

MawBroon Mon 08-Jan-18 12:07:25

This is a good thread!!
How long have you got...........?

kittylester Mon 08-Jan-18 12:01:54

I'm with you Ann, daren't grit my teeth though - I've got an issue with an upper left 5!

I have had reason to recollect another type who annoys me this morning.
This is the type who thinks you are very lazy to have a dishwasher, employ a cleaner, have shopping delivered, UNTIL, Dame Fortune smiles upon them and then does all those things immediately and now is boasting about paying for medical treatment with the comment" of course it was wonderful, but then you get much better treatment when you pay for it".
My teeth are nearly broken with gritting them this morning.
I am pleased I have got that out of my system.

DH won tickets for an evening with Pam Ayres.
Poor Pam had a very bad cold but bravely soldiered on with a glass of water at hand
It meant however we had to listen intently or we missed the punch line.

A few rows back was a lady who was enjoying herself so much that we did in fact miss quite a bit of the monologues.
The lady in question had a very high pitch laugh that unfortunately reverberated around the theatre.
But the biggest bug bear was she didn't stop to allow the rest of the audience to her the start of Pam's new story.

She seemed completely oblivious of all the looks she was getting, not so the poor friend sitting next to her who was overcome with embarrassmentblush

Isn’t it Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine who collects people? The more annoying, boring, weird the better.

I’m afraid I’m a bit the same as Jane10, I am inclined to encourage them to new heights. Not so good with name droppers as I never have a clue who they’re talking about.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 18:04:12

Ah! Thought you were confusing the Severn Valley with your Kenyan safari.grin

KatyK Sun 07-Jan-18 18:01:21

Yes! lemongrove grin No not really. It goes past West Midlands Safari Park - the bit where the elephants are and you can see them as you go by.

ffinnochio Sun 07-Jan-18 17:49:20

grin J10

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:48:52

Elephants roaming the Severn Valley?

KatyK Sun 07-Jan-18 17:47:07

People who go on about themselves/their family/friends and never ask how you are. Also, as mentioned by NotTooOld the 'Liz' and 'Tom' thing. Very annoying. By the way kitty isn't that lovely, having lunch on the steam train? DD bought us lunch on the Severn Valley railway one year. It was delightful - you see elephants and there was no annoying lady. smile

Jane10 Sun 07-Jan-18 17:43:34

As a very bad person, I do find myself encouraging boring people to new heights of blethering on about people I don't know or casually name dropping. I can do this and still like the people. I suppose I make my own amusement. Sometimes I set target words and award myself points if people say them. This is especially good at car club events but is useful at other times too. (eg 'flange' or 'pushing the envelope', or 'upgrade'.) So many potential uses. If you get conversional lemons make lemonade out of them!!

NotTooOld Sun 07-Jan-18 17:35:52

.......and another thing......people who refer to celebs in their conversation as if they were personal friends. As in '..and this morning Piers said......' 'Did you see Dawn in........' Grr.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:35:32

You can put their chatter into a book Jane, Alan Bennett says he eavesdrops ‘in tearooms’ grin

NotTooOld Sun 07-Jan-18 17:33:38

The ones who tell you a long tale mentioning people by their first names as though you should know who 'Liz' and 'Tom' are in their lives.

Jane10 Sun 07-Jan-18 17:32:00

Gosh that's a great list lemongrove. There's something about pitch as well as volume with some voices. Somehow the actual volume is low but what's being said carries across a room.
I am actually a shameless eavesdropper and thoroughly enjoy hearing about other people's lives. Sometimes I have to give DH 'the look' to shut up so I can hear them better. Very soon I'll start having to ask them to speak up if I can't quite catch all that they're saying across the room. That should put their gas at a peep!!

cornergran Sun 07-Jan-18 17:29:26

Oh yes. The ones without volume control top the list rapidly followed by those who are always late, particularly the ones who don’t wear a watch and see this as a reason to be late. I have been known to smile sweetly and point out the phone they have in their hand would also tell them the time. Most look very surprised hmm.
