Very annoying people

For DH's birthday in August, the children bought us lunch on a local steam railway which, due to one thing and another, we have only just been able to take.

We had a lovely meal and a very nostalgic ride on the line that DH used to get to school when he was a boy even passing close to his house which was on Station Road.

But, one woman on the table next to us had the most annoyingly loud voice possible. It was so loud that it made it impossible for Dh and I to have a conversation of our own. We heard all about her upcoming holidays, the hotels in London where she has had afternoon tea and what she thought of the staff, the latest shows she's been to, the last 4 cruises she went on. And, she continually said 'You know what I mean'.

Towards the end of our meal DH and I were having difficulty keeping a straight face but it did rather spoil DH's birthday treat and we will have to be a bit economical with the truth as far as the children are concerned.

Sorry, rant over, I feel better now.

What sort of people do you find annoying?

Those same people kitty although I don't get out enough now to let it bother mè.
People who give lip service to listening to you when all they are doing is waiting to talk about themselves, and one friend now is annoying me because since she was widowed 2 years ago ,has made lots of new friends who she has outings, meals etc with during the week but rings me to fill in at the weekend when they are with their families.

Exactly the same type as the "lady" in question.
What a pity your treat was spoiled. I too love steam train journeys.

We had a similar experience in a smart restaurant when celebrating a family birthday. Two couples at the next table which included a pregnant lady all drinking heavily, guffawing and speaking so loudly that the whole small room in the restaurant was full of their noise and self congratulation. Totally spoiled our evening as we couldn’t really hear to converse ourselves. Tried giving them “the look” but they were oblivious. Put us off returning, a shame as the food is excellent.

When Minibaggs and I were travelling back from Aberdeen Uni Open Day (four hour train journey) there was an very annoying young woman blethering away on her phone in the designated quiet coach for ages. Minibaggs and I and the two young men sitting opposite us were finding it very irritating. When we could name several of her cousins and it seemed that it was never going to stop I asked the young things if I should say something and got nods all round and a "Do it!" So I stood up and did it. Just asked if she realised it was the quiet coach and that people booked seats in such coaches deliberately to avoid other people's phone calls. The young lady was really surprised: "But I'm talking to my nan!"
"The rest of the train is at your disposal for talking to your nan," I said.

She did not move but the phone call did stop shortly after that. Apparently there was a breathless hush in the entire coach while the above exchange was happening.

You deserved a round of applause from them Baggs

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:04:32

Henceforth these people shall be called VAP’s grin

Christinefrance Sun 07-Jan-18 17:10:40

Let's hear it for Baggs well done. Those people annoy me too, inane loud phone calls or the people whose entire conversation revolves round themselves.
The steam train trip sounds brilliant what a lovely gift.

loopyloo Sun 07-Jan-18 17:11:53

I am aware that sometimes I come into that category because my DH is so deaf and I have to almost shout to have a conversation. One reason why I don't go out very often.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:12:44

The same ones as you kitty the very loud, selfish kind.angry

kittylester Sun 07-Jan-18 17:17:38

Dd says she loves next table entertainment.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:20:33

Also ( this may turn out to be a long list ....a bit like the Mikado one!) those perpetual latecomers, never on time for anything, the ones who boringly drone on about unknown relatives and holidays for hours, the ones who always want to go one better than you, the ones who sniff loudly and always sit next to you in the cinema, the ones who eat noisily next to you in the cinema, or worse, eat a messy hotdog. The ones who applaud in the cinema ( they can’t hear you, you dolt!)
The ones who come into the theatre late and stand on your toes to get to their seats, the ones who allow doors to bang shut in your face, the queue jumpers ( anywhere)......that will do to start with.grin

cornergran Sun 07-Jan-18 17:29:26

Oh yes. The ones without volume control top the list rapidly followed by those who are always late, particularly the ones who don’t wear a watch and see this as a reason to be late. I have been known to smile sweetly and point out the phone they have in their hand would also tell them the time. Most look very surprised hmm.

Jane10 Sun 07-Jan-18 17:32:00

Gosh that's a great list lemongrove. There's something about pitch as well as volume with some voices. Somehow the actual volume is low but what's being said carries across a room.
I am actually a shameless eavesdropper and thoroughly enjoy hearing about other people's lives. Sometimes I have to give DH 'the look' to shut up so I can hear them better. Very soon I'll start having to ask them to speak up if I can't quite catch all that they're saying across the room. That should put their gas at a peep!!

NotTooOld Sun 07-Jan-18 17:33:38

The ones who tell you a long tale mentioning people by their first names as though you should know who 'Liz' and 'Tom' are in their lives.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:35:32

You can put their chatter into a book Jane, Alan Bennett says he eavesdrops ‘in tearooms’ grin

NotTooOld Sun 07-Jan-18 17:35:52

.......and another thing......people who refer to celebs in their conversation as if they were personal friends. As in '..and this morning Piers said......' 'Did you see Dawn in........' Grr.

Jane10 Sun 07-Jan-18 17:43:34

As a very bad person, I do find myself encouraging boring people to new heights of blethering on about people I don't know or casually name dropping. I can do this and still like the people. I suppose I make my own amusement. Sometimes I set target words and award myself points if people say them. This is especially good at car club events but is useful at other times too. (eg 'flange' or 'pushing the envelope', or 'upgrade'.) So many potential uses. If you get conversional lemons make lemonade out of them!!

KatyK Sun 07-Jan-18 17:47:07

People who go on about themselves/their family/friends and never ask how you are. Also, as mentioned by NotTooOld the 'Liz' and 'Tom' thing. Very annoying. By the way kitty isn't that lovely, having lunch on the steam train? DD bought us lunch on the Severn Valley railway one year. It was delightful - you see elephants and there was no annoying lady. smile

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 17:48:52

Elephants roaming the Severn Valley?

ffinnochio Sun 07-Jan-18 17:49:20

grin J10

KatyK Sun 07-Jan-18 18:01:21

Yes! lemongrove grin No not really. It goes past West Midlands Safari Park - the bit where the elephants are and you can see them as you go by.

lemongrove Sun 07-Jan-18 18:04:12

Ah! Thought you were confusing the Severn Valley with your Kenyan safari.grin

KatyK Sun 07-Jan-18 18:09:42

grin

NfkDumpling Sun 07-Jan-18 18:09:45

Isn’t it Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine who collects people? The more annoying, boring, weird the better.

I’m afraid I’m a bit the same as Jane10, I am inclined to encourage them to new heights. Not so good with name droppers as I never have a clue who they’re talking about.
