I suppose it depends what you are buying. We go to a lot of antiques and collectible auctions and there doesn’t seem to be much of a market for furniture, but a good bronze, or piece of art glass or studio pottery would find a place in most modern settings I would have thought. Trouble is, people have been brainwashed by too many tv makeover programmes to think that minimalist modern decor is the only way to go. Live with whatever style suits you and enjoy it.

A friend recently told us that people aren't wanting to buy antiques any more as they are completely out of fashion. I was surprised to hear this. I love old china and furniture and we have very happy times going round antique shops. Actually it was pretty tactless of this friend to sound forth about how people only like white walls and Ikea furniture whole seated in our house fill of colour, fabrics and lovely old wood.
So who's right? Is there a future for antiques?
