I agree and having witnessed two local policemen grappling a drunk and violent neighbour into the gutter on Christmas Day in the pouring rain I take my hat off to them all.

Totally agree - I had to call an ambulance early this year, I found myself continually apologising to the paramedics as I was afraid I was wasting their time. Then one of them looked at me hard and said "I always tell our older (!) patients when in doubt - give us a shout".

Wow. A trapped owl must have been a nice change for the firemen. Entirely agree with all the other posters. We're very lucky to have these dedicated services to help us when we need them.

We had one in the old chimney where our boiler used to be.
Luckily we have an air vent which my husband unscrewed. No mess except for the trail of blood to the door, my husbands. The ungrateful thing bit him!

Yes. A lot of debris PamelaJ1. My husband initially wanted to set rubbish alight that was in the grate! I duly reported him to Owl Sanctuary. It was they who advised that the Fire Service would not mind helping out. Such a shame regarding cut backs in all of these emergency services. I suppose though it affects those of us not wealthy enough to have alternative options. Even Windsor Castle had the Armed Services to help put out that blaze.

Totally agree CelticRose. An elderly couple died in a house fire last year. All because the local fire station had been shut down. Their fire coincided with a large factory fire in Liverpool. There were no other stations available. So so sad .

We have twice had owls stuck in the chimney of our house. Once in the flexible hose of the cooker hood and once at the bottom of the flue the hose fed into.

We managed to get them out, although one flew round the kitchen several times, its wings getting within fractions of an inch of all the china on my dresser before flying out of the door!

After the second one we got our roofer to place a thick mesh across the top of the chimney. It never occurred to us to call the Fire Brigade.

I really don't think you can fault our emergency services (as a rule!) We're very lucky to have them.

Must also mention a post by Annibach. Mountain Rescue. Must also mention RNLI, plus all other voluntary or paid services to humanity and animals in the UK. I really did not mean to miss any of you out. You really are what makes this country a better place to live. Love you all x

At the moment we have a girl missing in our area and the coastguard police and other bodies have been out in all weathers searching I think they are all wonderful

Total respect for the RNLI. Saved my DSs life when he fell 40ft off a wall fishing in the Mersey . Freezing November it was .

I work for the NHS and I’m on duty today. What a brilliant bunch of people I work with.

Hear, hear! Due to DH's PD dementia (recently diagnosed) I have had cause to call an ambulance twice, and also the police on a separate occasion. They couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful. Like others, I felt guilty about calling, but they were very reassuring about it being the right thing to do.

We have had to use paramedic services on several occasions when my DD3 was pregnant, she is type 1 diabetic and pregnancy effects the diabetes very badly,combined with severe sickness lowering blood sugars dangerously! Thank heavens for the lovely ambulance crews who came out promptly and assisted with glucose drips and sat with us until she was well enough to be left.

Hear hear they are blooming marvellous all of them. Hope the owl was ok.

We're very lucky to have our emergency services. One of the things to consider if you decide to live out in the sticks is how long it would take them to get to you if you ever needed them.

Not quite the same as an owl, but I got sent this funny video last year about a bat in the kitchen of an Irish family's house. The adult son is hiding in the utility room and filming it on his phone. Excuse the bad language!

So funny! A few days after we saw this we had our own bat in the kitchen. We’ve no idea how he got in. DH and I hid behind the door being encouraging while our very calm and competent DDIL ushered him out.

Want to add my thanks and admiration to all our nurses, doctors, paramedics, firefighters, police, soldiers, sailors, Air Force personnel, coast guards, RNLI, animal rescue, charities, carers, the list is endless. Only realised after I started just how many people we should be very grateful for. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Glad the owl survived x

My son in law is a police officer. This year he had an early Christmas lunch at our house then left to deal with the murder of a young mother. Then on Boxing Day he was dealing with a drunk and was kicked in the chest and elbowed in the face. Not much good cheer for him over the festive season.

My hat off to all emergency services, Doctors and Nurses everyone who makes places safe and all who save lives, too many to mention. God Bless them all.

We are very lucky to live in such a functioning and fantastic country and I am very grateful to all our emergency call out workers.

Goodness! Fishing in the Mersey? Could you POSSIBLY eat anything caught in those murky waters? I'll refrain from commenting about 40 ft walls and fishing in freezing November. Glad he was ok. I support the RNLI, KSSAIR and the Sally Army.
