Do you?

How do you?

We do, on our own at home.

The first new year party I went to with dh, about a week after we met, was thrown by his senior partner and was an excruciating experience. Having to kiss, and be kissed by loads of people I didn't know and rarely, if ever, saw again.

Luckily, we both felt the same and have only done family New Year Parties since.

Tonight we will have a nice meal, nice wine, celebrate that we made it to the end of the year and look forward to the next.

What do you do?

Thanks Annie so am I, but I really hate to spoil the atmosphere, while being aware that I have, just down tonight.
I wish you Annie a peaceful and calm New Year and all you would wish yourself. Xx

Hi lovely ladies. We've just got in from a get together at my DDs. Can't last till twelve. All tucked up now with a cuppa. Had a few tipples . A very Happy New Year to every one of you and to all at HQ x

I have a cynics view of New Year.
Nothing is going to change for me with an H with dementia.
It is only going to get worse until one of us dies.
We have had a roast chicken dinner and all my H could talk about was how hard and how long it was raining.
I tried to talk about the past, the future? What I would like to do in the house, all fell on deaf ears. He went to bed at 9pm and after clearing up and putting the dishwasher on, I followed. No cheer and no expectations.
What a drag down I am.
Happy New Year to all.

After many years celebrating NY we are now of an age when a quiet evening at home with cat and dog (who trembles) when the fireworks start. We will be going to bed before "the bells" - hubby is a glaswegian so I also speak the speak! The years we did celebrate, we did it big time and although looked the part, the smiling, the kissing, and the dancing, I always felt sad and sometimes cried, thinking of all those I loved dearly were no longer around. I will be very happy when the days become normal and knowing that we are getting closer to the Spring.

Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy 2018 - what would I do without Granset. smile

On another note, I have enjoyed many Happy New Years, the best being in Scotland with my youngest adult daughter. Ice-skating, the Hogmanay party, the bars (ended up in a gay bar full of guys in leather kilts and a Danny la Rue/Shirley Bassey look-a-like in the full evening monty, who was a man (I would never have known had he not spoken)
We stayed in a glorious boutique hotel, The Albany in Edinburgh. Other great NYs in Middleham N.Yorks watching the horses being exercised from the window of the White Swan and walking up to the castle on pristine snow, before tucking into a wonderful lunch by a roaring log fire with my youngest son and daughter and their housekeeper. Dubai was magical but too glitzy and I prefer British weather. Two of my children are part of the horse racing fraternity and it's a wonderful world at any time of the year.
I too hope that all GNs who are alone, unwell or enduring difficult times, find a measure of peace and comfort in knowing that others on here care and are wishing every one of you a healthy and contented 2018.

My late husband used to like going out NYE, but I never really liked it. He passed away 20 years ago, so tend to stay in and watch TV glass in hand sometimes never even made it to midnight smile I record the fireworks and watch in the morning. I usually cook for my sister and her family NYD (she does Christmas) but due to circumstances took them and another friend who is also on her own out for a meal earlier today. Not looking forward to the evening as we lost our Father in June, and I lost a friend of 20 years a couple of days before Christmas- am sincerely hoping 2018 will be far better

Happy New Year to everyone

It's just another day and double excuse for some people to get drunk.
I can have a special meal and wine any day of the week and I enjoy every day, not needing to 'celebrate
having got through another year', as if it's an obstacle course or a trial.

Harris27 Sun 31-Dec-17 20:40:18

Husband and I sitting with nibbles and glass of wine wishing you all a very happy peaceful new year x

Daisyboots Sun 31-Dec-17 20:28:46

We had our usual invite to the dinner put on by some of the people in our part of the village here in Portugal but neither of us particularly enjoy it as even after 9 years some people just stare and never speak. DH has a cold (man flu) so I used that as an excuse to cancel. Plus two the children upset him with their squabbling during the week which is not good with his PTSD. So while he is feeling down they are together partying. I do wish would just get on with their lives and have a bit more consideration.
So NYE for us today has been soup and rolls (all he wanted) plus finishing off the Christmas cake, mince pies etc. We spent two years apart so now make the most of our time together.
Happy New Year to you all.

Hello Trendygran, I’m on my own tonight. I was widowed 18 yrs ago, then had a new partner for 15 years til he had his marching orders beg of November, hence I’m home alone tonight and feeling liberated... he is on a coach trip on the Isle of Wight with his new amour. Am I bovvered ... not on your life I’m free??

In the 1970s we used to go to the clubs in and around Picadilly and then on to Trafalgar Square. Never ever got home until 6 or 7 in the morning! The clubs used to stay open and serve breakfast as there was no transport to take anyone home in those days. It was so safe and such fun. New Years in Trafalgar Square isn't the same anymore, barriers and cordons and controlled displays of fireworks, not to mention security aspects. Gone are the carefree days. Now we just carry on as normal, up here in North Yorkshire and send greetings by text to our children and watch the London fireworks on catchup the next day.

Hello everyone, I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year! May all your dreams and desires come true

cherryblossom Sun 31-Dec-17 20:08:54

Hate it, I will be in bed alone, by ten after a few glasses of bubbles. DH in long term nursing care and our only S&family live overseas. Not miserable and I do not resent others happiness. We are only in our early sixties and had no idea our lovely married life would come to such a heartbreaking halt. To all my fellow grandparents I wish you a very healthy and happy 2018 ??????

Overthehills Sun 31-Dec-17 19:43:51

DH isn’t too well and has gone to bed. I shall stay up for a while and have another whisky or two. He often had to work on NYE so we’ve never made much of it.

Marydoll Sun 31-Dec-17 19:38:27

We will do what we have always done for the last 25 years, a few drinks and supper with our 6 close friends and neighbours. We take it in turns to host. It used to be an all nighter, now we are getting older and no longer have the stamina, so it will be bed at about 1am.
Happy New year to All.

TerriBull Sun 31-Dec-17 19:02:52

We had friends to stay for quite a few years on NYE, but broke with that tradition a couple of years ago. As the years rolled by I found it all too much like hard work so soon after Christmas having to stock up on everything again and cook another meal. The last couple of years we have celebrated with friends in a restaurant. We have been out to lunch today but I am not feeling that well have developed a sore throat and cold, quite looking forward to an early night with a book shock

Hope everyone else's NYE goes well and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all.

Heather23 Sun 31-Dec-17 18:11:30

Reading of so many of you being on your own makes me realise I am so lucky to have DH. We don't go out these NYEs, too much forced bonhomie and waiting for the bells to strike before you have to sing and kiss strangers - not for us anymore! Would love to have close friends to share with (as we used to when younger) but now it's on with the woodburner, a glass of something chilled, watching The Crown on DVD and if we can stay awake, we'll watch the fireworks from Westminster and whilst they are an amazing spectacle will be thinking of the better things that all that money could be spent on - not least the homeless and victims of Grenfell Tower. Happy New Year one and all

TyneAngel Sun 31-Dec-17 18:06:33

I am on my own for NYE for the first time . DH died nearly 4 years ago; spent first 2 NYs on a coach holiday; the first was excellent, everyone friendly and inclusive, the second, I was the only solo traveller in the party. Last year a friend came to stay for a few days, it was hard work. So this year I had my main meal at lunchtime, have had a relaxing bath, done my nails and am going to heat up some canapes to have with my little bottle of cava. Many of us have spent our lives putting everyone else first; I felt quite guilty, planning my evening, but now feel quite relaxed and cheery. It helps that I went to a couple of drinks parties while staying with DD at Christmas; standing around making small talk with a drink in one hand, canapé in the other, was not much fun. I send everyone warm wishes for 2018, and a hug for everyone on their own.
