dropped my hearing aid in the sink

Thanks for all the tips but i have got it working again by placing on a teatowel on the radiator to dry out.

If you rinse it out an let it dry thoughly it might still work .
An elderly member of our knitting group was at home eating some nibbles but unfortunately she took a bite out of her small hearing aid instead and damaged it . We had to laugh with her.

Why put off hearing aids if you need them? No different from wearing glasses if you need those (and most of us do)
When I got mine I was told it is much better to get them earlier rather than later, when it takes longer to get used to them.
I recently lost one and found it under the dishwasher, thankful dry. My cat had knocked it down and under there.

Open the battery compartment and remove battery.
Leave compartment open. Put the aid on a towel and leave it in a warm area.
I've done this before and it works. I've worn hearing since childhood as as profoundly deaf.

My late Mum lost her hearing aid when she was in a care home. We all searched for it without success, then next day it turned up ---in the commode!!! When dried out, it still worked fine. In fact, Mum insisted that it worked better than it had before!

I haven't read the whole thread! We need an acronym for that!

If a mobile phone gets immersed in water the advice is to put it into a container of uncooked rice. My sister-in-law did this after a lake jetty she and the rest of the family were on collapsed and they all ended up in the water. It worked.

I think Fennel lives abroad so NHS hearing aids are probably not an option.
DH has them and they cost a couple of thousand but he did not want to bother the overloaded NHS.

Tried again this morning after leaving on top of the radiator yesterday evening and its working.

The battery chimed to denote that it is low on charge but at least the main body is opperational, thank you all for your suggestions.

Another vote for putting it in a bed of rice. Worked for my Fitbit after it fell into my pond.

I have worn Hearing Aids for 15 years, never dropped them in water so I am afraid can offer no advice except to say, if they are NHS, make an appointment at Audiology and they will replace. I think there is only a fee if you lose them?

fennel I have never paid for my Hearing Aids, I go every 6 months or so, for new tubes and batteries, and never paid anything towards these. Thank goodness for the NHS! I am currently awaiting new ones as apparently mine are now obsolete !

Alima this is why I rarely go swimming now as you have to take them out and then I cannot hear

My son put his nokia mobile through a wash cycle in his jeans pocket. Let it dry out. It still works!

I agree with MissA, you can leave a wet phone in rice why not a hearing aid,

Fennel - Go to GP and ask to be referred to Specsavers (who act as NHS hearing aid agent in most towns) - my appointment came back within a week. I was fitted with aids straight away, walked out with them in my ears and I have not taken them out since (except to go to bed or have a shower). No reports, no money changing hands; and I stroll in there for free batteries now and again.

The only test is sitting in a booth for 5 minutes and pressing a button when you hear a sound.

Thanks, Luckygirl, but it's all the tests, reports, finance etc that I can't cope with. On top of all the other hospital appts.

I think rice absorbs water, so maybe the airing cupboard in a cup of rice?

I have put phones in the airing cupboard with good results.

I'm supposed to get a hearing aid but putting it off.... however I have resorted tonight to putting subtitles on the TV!

When DH washed the electric part of the new ice creammaker under the tap I put it in the airing cupboard for a few days and it still works!

Fennel please don't be put off by the idea of hearing aids. I am a good deal younger than you and have had mine about a year - they are truly brilliant. I had to change the battery in one yesterday and my GS (age 15) was watching and said "I did not know you wore hearing aids Grandma!" So they can't be that obtrusive!

Why do you hate the idea?

I have nearly gone in the shower with mine in - just remembered at the last moment! I am not very optimistic for yours though - the washing up water is definitely not the place for them!

I've been getting more and more deaf over the last 10 years (I'm nearly 82 now) and they're all trying to make me get hearing aids. I hate the idea.
So now I have a good excuse - "I might drop it down the sink" !

Try googling the question, may help. (Never thought of this before, does a hearing aid have to be removed if you go swimming?)

Don't actually have one, travelsafar, but first thought is to try gentle use of a hairdryer?
