Wise sayings

I've got advice my mother gave me on my wedding day. She said "remember, your husband is always right, even when he's wrong." It has stood me in good stead over the years.

Adaptation is the basis of survival. When life throws something at me I try to think calmly about how to deal with it. At least that's the aim. Often I just panic.

I am always quoting my darling mum - she had so many words of wisdom.
But not to forget my darling dad who would say - if I was being impatient about an event - "Much water has to pass under the bridge before then".

Dear mum always had the same encouraging words for all those who came to visit; 'Do your best and let the Good Lord do the rest...'

My mum regularly warns, "don't wish your life away".

gliribird, "Don't let the b******s grind you down" is something my DH frequently says too

'It is as it is'. A very calming thought when everything goes wrong - gives me a moment to breath deeply and then try to see a way round the chaos! I think this was the motto of the Plantagenets - served them well as far as I can see,

My mother used to say ‘I wept because I had no shoes and then I met a man who had no feet’. I used to go away muttering under my breath ‘ But you still had no shoes’

When confronted by someone less fortunate my Mum would always say: There, but for the grace of God, go I/you. I’ve always said it too and my girls now say it to their children, abbreviating it to
“ there but.....”

But it’s complete and utter rubbish that words will never hurt you - utter utter rubbish. Thank goodness my dgc are being brought up to neither throw sticks or stones OR say unkind cruel things to others. How very Christian to teach children that words don’t hurt.

My favourite is ‘the work can wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you do the work.’

DM used to say that if I was upset - now I try to tell DGD the same if someone is being unkind at school.
(I'm not sure that it makes things better though.)

I've always done onto others as I've wished to be done by myself. However... if the others aren't in the same mind why did my parents even teach me that? I got walked over at school grrr
