the "strange" compliment you remember best

Around 1955 (I was about 9 or 10) the boys in my road reluctantly accepted me into their males only Street gang. When I was the last to jump back off the railway line as the steamtrain approached, the gang leader said "Gosh, Ju! You're ALMOST as good as a boy!" I've since had my share of positive comments about my looks or character but, strange as it it seems, that was the one I best remember. What unusual compliments do YOU recall?

An Italian family friend commented on my Facebook photo "you are beautiful." Flattered, I modestly responded "oh, I'm getting old now!" He then ruined the whole thing by observing "beautiful is a good heart, not a pretty face." Deflated!

And another DH special. He helped down a vivacious divorcee from our coach steps with the words "Oh, Diane, you look lovely tonight". Catching sight of me glowering behind her, he swiftly added "You look very nice as well". grin

I had been to the hairdressers and afterwards went shopping
A lady stopped me and said how nice my hair looked after she went off I thought really great and then I tripped up on the pavement and nearly went over.

When I was about 19. On the tube in London the Irish guy sitting across from us told me “You’re a flower. You’re no rose, but you’re a flower.” ?

Best compliment ever....I think ... was when I first moved to a new job in a new town.My husband of two years had stayed behind in our last home to ‘tie things up’ and I was staying with his parents. When I had been at my new job 2 days a lovely, elderly man I worked with said to me , “ you’re lovely, and you have ‘come to bed eyes’...I’d never heard the expression before and I thought it a grand saying. When I told my my husband later he said the old fella was trying to ‘pull me’. But you know he wasn’t , we worked together for a couple of years and he was always courteous and correct with me. His name was George and Ive never forgotten it. Also it’s nicer than anything my husband has EVER said to me.!! Says a lot.

Remember 'autograph' books? I must have been about eight years old when my teacher wrote in mine. " Be good sweet child and let who will be clever."

My mother used to tell me a neighbour peered in the pram to see me as a baby and managed by way of remark it’s got a good shaped head”.

Last time i had my smear test the nurse informed me that I had great pelvic floor muscles. I left the surgery feeling flattered and very delighted with myself. But I realised a short while later that years ago it would have taken a compliment from a good looking young man to delight me in the same way! I guess my expectations have dropped as my age has risen.

My daughter looked at me and said: 'You know you could really do with a
complete facelift and then maybe no-one would notice you're fat". And there I was thinking I was looking pretty good for my age!! Silly me!

Similar to yours, giulia. I'm female and, when I went out one night with a female friend, A man I know was out with friends and he spotted me as I walked past his group. His comment was, "This is Denise. She's one of the lads." I still feel proud over that comment.

Humbertbear My mother is good at that too. She once said 'well I think you have a pretty face' with great emphasis on the 'I' as if she disagreed with the general consensus.
I was also once told in a nightclub that I was relatively attractive (by someone who wasn't exactly hot himself - which I wasn't quick thinking or confident enough to point out).

A big group of us were sitting in the pub one evening and one of our friends said completely out of nowhere, "Sue always looks clean!" Another friend was watching a programme about cosmetic surgery and her husband said, 'If you ever want it done I'll support you.' She was not pleased. ?

About 4 years ago, parked car in Tesco's & walking towards the shop ..... Man rushes over to me
"Excuse me, I just wanted to tell you how lovely you look". My mind went blank as I looked around for the hidden "candid cameras" filming this weird encounter. My mouth opened and all I uttered was "WHAT?"
He then said "I like to make someone feel good about themselves each day".

Stuttering now, I gave him a quick "thank you, enjoy your day too". I shall never know if it was a compliment or a joke. He looked sane, he was polite, etc but I've always thought "how weird". I decided he was crazy but he definitely made me feel good that day ?

Someone told me the other day that my sister was clever.

Trying to grow my a little.I'd clipped my hair to one side to keep my fringe out of my eyes. My mum piped up she'd never seen me with my hair in that style, then continued to say "looks like you're wearing a wig" Thanks Mum ?
Needless to say the clip came out & the hair came off !

It was coming up to my birthday and a friend asked how old I was going to be ' 60 ' was my reply, she said ' well you don't look it but I expect you did once '

My aunt said to me when I had long hair. "You can get away with having your hair just hanging"!

GrandmasueUK Mon 18-Dec-17 11:11:02

My niece L had put a picture of herself, the bride and her sister C, the bridesmaid on Facebook. A family friend commented, 'You look beautiful L. Never mind C, I'm sure you'll look beautiful on your wedding day as well.'

My mother always used to tell of an old neighbour who, when she and my granny stopped to chat, said, My God Sarah, what a braw lassie”.
Mother was delighted, as she was wearing her first “ grown up “ coat ( a fitted brown number with a fur collar), and was preening herself when the old lady added,
“ She’s just hingin’ wi’ fat!”

Marydoll Mon 18-Dec-17 11:13:37

We once had an occasion at school, where were all dressed up in our finery. My boss turned to said to my friend, "You look stunning,( and she was, as always) oh and Mrs Marydoll looks OK, too"

sarahellenwhitney Mon 18-Dec-17 11:14:02

A patient once said to me "You look quite intelligent with your glasses on".

meandashy Mon 18-Dec-17 11:23:56

A 'friend ' told me I'd be pretty if I lost some weight confused.

I was out in a pub with my ex when a guy on the next table started chatting to us. I jokingly said “He’s only going out with me for my money” and the guy said “Then he needs to go to Specsavers”. The nicest compliment I ever had.

My grandma was quite scary though she did not go in for corporal punishment - a look was enough. She was always very house proud too. In my late teens (1967) my parents agreed I could stay over in town in her flat as they lived on the outskirts of the city. This meant sleeping with her in her box bed in the living room though she had two other bedrooms. Whenever I stayed over she gave me breakfast in bed - 2 hot 'rowies' - (scottish croissants) dripping with syrup butter and delicious crumbs - with a cup of tea. Impossible to manage without messing up her bed. It was only long after she died that this was her way of showing that she loved me........
