Feeling guilty about an unnecessary and extravagant purchase

Lovely to see you Chewy and how sensible of you to treat your bedroom to some luxury bed linen. I hope you will also get something just for yourself as you’ve been so generous to others. Have a luxury pedicure or massage or whatever floats your boat. And have lots of lovely sleepful nights!

Cheers everyone! My new bedding was divine last night . It feels so cool and smooth; totally different to the M&S and Sainsburys bedding I've always had. Think I might have set a precedent though.... the old bedding feels so rough in comparison! Looking forward to going to bed early tonight where I can gaze at my navel in luxury! Lovely to walk in to your bedroom and enjoy the look of your beautiful new bedding, even better to snuggle down in to it and have a good night’s sleep. Sweet dreams. Guilt is a wasted emotion, especially when you’ve nothing to feel guilty about.

You must have worked hard to deserve your bonus- don't waste time talking yourself in to feeling guilty for spending it on something luxurious for yourself.

It doesn't matter what you spent it on. You worked well, got a large bonus and spent a small proportion of it on yourself. Why on earth not? What does it matter whether the money was spent on bed linen, prosecco or a spa day?

Don't feel guilty. The money you spent on it was a bonus. You're only here once and you can't take it with you as they say. Enjoy your lovely bedding.

I've got about 8 for my bed but the most expensive was the Laura Ashley and a Descamps. It's better than booze and drugs!

I believe that anybody who earns their money honestly is perfectly entitled to spend it any way they wish, and I think you have been very charitable. Enjoy it, and feel fortunate in having such a generous boss.

Unless you’ve done something thoughtlessly or deliberately to hurt someone, then your conscience shouldn’t need salving. Do what you want otherwise and don’t waste time and effort in such indulgent navel gazing.

You spent the money wisely and, as it was your bonus, you had every right to. Enjoy your bedding!

I didn’t have a deprived childhood...but had to hide from the rent man more than once I remember!! But we as kids were always encouraged to pay the bills first then what’s left is for you to do with as you saw fit. Comics , sweets, saving. My parents were generous to a fault ( hence hiding from rentman) but they never said no to themselves and always encouraged open-handedness in us. But what you want...it’s your money..and stop saying “NO’ to yourself!

Three's too many for me but I'm the poorest interior aware person in the world and one of everything makes my life much easier. Basically, I'm just plain lazy and a non-hoarder. I hope you get lots of pleasure from your new purchase Chewbacca. Sounds as though you already are. Champion!

I'm new here but I've been reading your posts almost daily to get a feel for how it's 'done', the niceties observed etc.
The bedding thread ( no pun intended) is one I relate to. I live on my own but my bed is so important to me. I splurged on an expensive wool, silk and cotton mattress and a separate thick mattress topper which means I practically need a stool to climb into bed.
I too, like crisp white sheets which I buy from an Italian import company in Reading who service 5* hotels with linen. (FRETTE) If I buy sets I almost always use white sheets with them but, as my winter duvet is a California King (bought in Maceys) I can't easily get covers to fit so I have a top sheet and huge soft pale pink or a grey crushed velvet throw. I live pillows too and have two on each side plus two large square (EU) pillows...always in white Oxford pillowcases. Too many sets to count.

It was the best possible way to spend that money. You will have yers of pleasure from it. Others would have spent it on an expensive meal or a weekend away - those pleasures would have been very short-lived. As someone said, divide it by 52 and you will see it in a different light.

I have a bedset addiction, justifying it by mostly buying in the Next sales! Probably about a dozen & counting....

You did the right thing to buy something you really liked for yourself. Don't plague yourself with doubts. You must have done a good job for your employer to receive a great bonus, so be proud of yourself for being rewarded and just tell yourself that it's your own money well spent .... on yourself - for yourself. You absolute earned it!

Four sets for our bed, used in rotation. They're all different shades and patterns of green and yellow, and go with the curtains.

I think unless you know for a fact you have some heavy bills coming up that you didn't think you could pay (in which case yes keep the money) it's better to spend it on something you want and like. Otherwise all that happens is it sits there till it's eventually eaten up by all manner of little things and you've got nothing to show for it.

Chewy I agree with everyone here. The bonus was yours , you've shared it. Why not spend it on yourself?

As for feeling that 3 sets of bedding is "extravagant", i have 6. That is extravagant...

You can have a different bedding set for every day of the year if you want them and if you have earned the money to pay for them yourself, which you obviously have. No guilt needs to be involved at all.

You can never have enough nice bedding. Nothing is nicer than getting into bed in good quality bed linen it not luxury but essential. In my childhood we were very poor, bedding thin and worn, never enough of it, so I guess this is why I make up for it now filling a need from childhood I guess.

Enjoy, as so many others have said. We are a generation brought up not to indulge ourselves, but I feel we should all be able to treat ourselves from time to time. When faced by a choice such as yours I always ask myself what I would say to a friend and I would tell her to spoil herself for once.

I think you need 3 sets.If you change the bed and put a set in the wash and then someone is sick or has another accident you need to use the 3rd set.

Just a moan, why can't we have, in UK, labels on bedding stating whether queen size, king size etc. I have white bedding (enough to see me out and beyond) and some old USA stuff. The USA bedding is labelled according to size. Have resorted to permanent marker but it is not that permanent!
