I volunteer at a Food Bank which is run by my sister and her husband. Every week there are items which are past their sell-by date. They are in the donations- recently we had half a jar of Marmite! We cannot give them out officially- think of the risks- illness, bad publicity, compensation claims. We put all items in a container in the cafe area for clients to help themselves, making it clear that it is extra to their food package, and is at their own risk. It always goes.
A bigger issue is fresh food. We have no storage facilities for fresh food, and the regulations we have to adhere to are very strict. I find this frustrating.
