Presents for Hairdressers?

Am not aware of the expectation of providing special Xmas gifts to hairdressers here in Oz unless you felt especially close to them for some reason. Is this a special UK thing? As others have noted this is a business transaction, you are paying for a service so why feel an obligation to offer presents at Xmas? Presumably you don't feel that same obligation to the myriad of other businsses who provide services to you during the year? I must admit I find this quite puzzling.

I don't tip full stop. They get paid to do a job just like every other person.

I usually put £5 in with her Christmas card. A cut and blow dry is £25 at my hairdressers, I have been going there about 9 years and consider hairdressing as a more personal service than some of the jobs that people do. Having your hair done is something that you choose to do. I go every six weeks and also leave a small tip.

Christinefrance, as a retired librarian, I can tell you that lots of people buy library staff presents! We used to get enough boxes of chocolates, biscuits, tea, etc. to keep us going until Easter! We used to put bowls of sweets on the counter for the readers to share, and on the days when we were open on Christmas Eve, we would offer coffee and mince pies. Those were the days when libraries really were valued in the community.

I understand Norah as I live in a City Centre and the cost of a cut colour and blow dry is only slightly less than she pays. I am still working full time and I don’t spend much on myself otherwise, so at the moment I get it done. If my circumstances change it will be one of the things that will have to go. I have had the same hairdresser for about 7 years my previous hairdresser about 30 years (I moved area). I usually buy her a present (bath stuff/jewellery) but only a few quid. It is just a token and she seems to like it.

I don’t tip my hairdresser at all. Used to give to the junior who washed it but they don’t have one any more. My dentist collects items for food bank in December so I will give to that.

I give mine £10 so she can buy a couple of drinks on her works night out. She does a great job on my hair, well I like it! I also enjoy hoping there all year for a colour and cut.

I usually take in a box of something nice - special biscuits/chocolates etc. and a card for her and her assistant . (Very small salon!)

They get a box of chocolate biscuits. They are pretty good and not too expensive and always nice and friendly.
I also get choc biscuits for the surgery staff - might get a bigger box this year as they have all been brilliant with my husband's serious health problems.
Two bottles of rose for the postie - I know his wife and that is what they usually drink.
We keep thinking about downsizing but it is unlikely that we could get a house in this village and when I think of the utterly wonderful support around us here I generally change my mind.

I just tip every time I go and give her a card with an extra £5 in at Christmas. It doesn’t sound much but if all her clients did that she would have a nice sum for Christmas.

I don't tip my Hairdresser when I have my hair done I just put some money away each time ready to give in a lump sum at Christmas in a money wallet.

No pressie for my hairdresser and no tip either! Its an expensive salon which I shouldnt really be attending (gave up for six months when I retired, hair looked awful, I felt awful, went straight back!) and they are all on commission. To put in context we dont give any Christmas pressies to family or friends (donate to charity instead). If anyone hosts a meal we take wine and flowers at any time of the year. Just to be completely inconsistent the milkman gets a fiver every Christmas with his card!

I don’t tip my hairdresser never have, but I give her 3 children selection boxes at Christmas cos her salon is in her house.

Cut and blow dry has now gone up to £39 and I am going to look for another hairdresser.
Now, if I have a hospital appointment before Christmas I may take the nurses at the clinic a gift.

Christinefrance I don't spend a couple of hours every month with those people. After 15+ years my hairdresser and I know each other quite well and natter away like friends. She's brilliant with all the things I have tried with my hair over the years and making sure that that I don't make bad choices. She even got her last kitten from a friend of mine. Thinking about it, I see her more often than a couple of my closest and oldest friends. A small gesture at Christmas is not unreasonable.

£75 for a hair cut is ridiculous blimey I d do a college course and cut it myself well you must be very well off too Norah if you don’t baulk at that Good luck to you

My family are lucky to get bought presents, so my hairdresser certainly doesn't get a look in!
I had never given it a thought. I feel a bit mean now, but not mean enough to change my ways.

How many people buy gifts for the shelf stacker in the supermarket or the librarian / waitress/ bus driver. Just asking .

I have only just started to have someone coming to do my hair,and shes not what i would call cheap,mine cost 30.00 for a perm and 15.00 for a cut.Is this the going rate.
If i have her to trim my hair i would more than likely buy something for her young child being xmas.
