Children being dogmatic!

I have a significant birthday coming up and my two DS and one DD have arranged a long weekend for me, with all the family, staying in a large concerted barn. My two DS have two DC each - the eldest of which is 4 years old. My DD has a tiny French Bulldog puppy. My eldest DS has said if my DD brings the dog he and his family will not come. I presume it is because his older son (aged 4) is not keen on dogs. However the puppy is no bigger than a cat and is well trained. Neither of my two DS has yet met the puppy. It is not often all the family gets together like this and I want to find a way to resolve it!

The puppy died (as an adult dog) whilst leaping over a barbed wire fence to commit an act of buggery with another male dog - something it was wont to do. What a delight he was! The council men came to take the body away and that was when my innocent ears first heard the word f***, as in "Blimey it weighs a f***ing ton!!"

Think Essex accent.

I'm glad I don't have this problem. I'm no Barbara Woodhouse.

Gosh - what a shame this has become your problem Ranworth1.
Personally I'd tell your son to visit his sister and her pup and sort it out between themselves.
I've just been on holiday with my son's puppy and we all had a great time because the pup was well managed. Simples!

I m another in the camp of no dog both for the kids and the puppies sake
One of my grandkids was so frightened of dogs at that age that even a tiny puppy would have been awful for him and to his little mind would have been the equivalent of an unexploded bomb
I don’t like the crate idea the noise of kids spinning around the room would surely frighten the puppy and I don’t think it’s fair to keep a dog in a crate
For everyone’s sake keep them separate on this occasion

How are puppies expected to get used to children if adults throw their hands up in horror whenever the P word is uttered?
It's a great idea to get the puppy used to the children/the children used to the puppy but putting together four little children, one of whom doesn't like dogs, and a puppy, on a weekend away in a strange place for a holiday which is supposed to be a treat for Granny's birthday is not the right time or place.

Phew, take a breath Jalima

Not ‘keen on dogs’ doesn’t equate to ‘doesn’t like dogs’. I can tell from luckygirl’s comments though that she is actually a dog hater which is something I certainly find worrying. There a big difference between being concerned about mixing dogs and children and actually leading the thread into dog hate country.

Also intrigued by the concept of a ‘concerted’ barn. Does this mean it can be folded up (like a concertina)?

Just feel sorry that the OP will have her weekend spoiled by these kind of people in her family.

Luckygirl's post had me humming the theme tune from The Great Escape. shock

I take it nobody thought to get the poor thing castrated?

Christinefrance Tue 21-Nov-17 08:54:59

Love your alternative idea Jalima give me a puppy any day. ( ducks behind sofa ) ☺

Great comments, - if different opinions! Thanks so much. Lots to think about, and I love the comments from merlotgran!

Oh dear, my idea of a waking nightmare. Nearly all of my family are allergic to cats and dogs. If it was my birthday treat I would be saying thanks but no thanks. We always rent properties that do not allow pets.

I should put the puppy in kennels for its own safety! Good luck with the 4 smalls. Just rereading see the pup is probably DDs baby at present - o'h go on mix them all up.

How utterly selfish to dump this on you when it’s supposed to be your treat. The “adult” causing the issue should be having a civilised chat with the dog owner as to how best they can amicably resolve the issue, without dragging you into the middle of it.

Elrel Tue 21-Nov-17 10:11:10

What does DD say? Puppy is her responsibility.
I'm seeing the concerted barn as having musicians popping up to perform!

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 10:11:37

Poor puppy, being landed in the midst of all that jollity and with four little children to add to the mix.

Luckygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 10:46:04

A "dog hater"! - oh no! - that is not allowed! I will high me off to a psychotherapist for a "cure"!!

No puppy on this weekend - if anyone feels this child needs "doing good to" and training to like dogs, then a jolly family weekend is not the time to do it.

sarahellenwhitney Tue 21-Nov-17 11:37:08

Ranworth1
I understand the puppy is Dd's child?
A dog not used to children is unadvisable as is children not accustomed to dogs.As much as I do not like having to put a pet in kennels there are no options if this party is to be without trauma

I don’t know you Luckygirl but I can tell you rejoice in that status.

Luckygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 13:42:36

I don't rejoice in it; and neither do I see it as an accurate description of me. I do not hate dogs; I just find it unacceptable that anyone who might is seen as mentally ill and in need of treatment; and that there are hopeless dog owners who see it as acceptable to allow their animals to be a nuisance to others.

Lona Tue 21-Nov-17 14:01:53

Friday you made a huge assumption there about Luckygirl. No one is taking this thread into dog hate territory.

CherryHatrick Tue 21-Nov-17 14:01:54

Friday have you by any chance slipped your leash and escaped from the realms of Mumsnet? It is rare to see such psychological perspicacity over here on GN...

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:08:18

Oh I’ve been sussed!

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:10:09

Love the alliterative pyschological perspicacity (genuinely do) but doubt I could actually say it without getting vowels in a twist.

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:12:52

I don’t see you as mentally ill anyway luckygirl. I’m terrified if tigers, genuinely terrified. Happily I don’t meet them walking down the street in RL. If I did and it was upsetting me then I’d seriously think about getting some help with this phobia.
