Does this Paul Hollywood buy his sausage rolls from Greggs? I thought he was a cook or a chef
Locked room for breakables when grandkids stay?
The Guardian would have us believe that only 'flaky' Christians are likely to be upset by Gregg's depiction of the Nativity, placing a sausage roll in the manger.
So, Christians are 'flaky" (oh so witty, not) to be upset?
I am no longer a church-goer but I was brought up as a Christian, as were many of us I suspect, and I am offended that Greggs think it is OK to offend as they have. Not only that, journalists like this oh so lofty sneering one place the blame for any offence on silly Christians who are obviously not normal if they have faith.
It really sickens me, this media hatred of certain groups when some are beyond criticism.
One journalist suggested all religions are open to parody and it is par for the course. I'd suggest otherwise. Make fun of Mohammed and you'll be blown to smithereens. Think Charlie Hebdo.
The hilarity the defaced manger scene has caused over the internet puzzles me. Greggs in their insensitivity have become the comic heroes and Christians, for believing in Christ's lowly birth, are the idiotic 'right wing' reactionaries, according to left wing media.
I am cross at the power of social media to dictate what we should think, but also on behalf of my truly lovely Christian friends. One told me she has 'turned the other cheek'.
How do you feel?

I knew there was something I had to watch today, trisher. Thanks for reminding me about the Last Leg.
I think the idea of the ad is in poor taste and has offended a lot of people. The point is, it has got people talking about Gregg's sausage rolls, which is all Gregg's wanted in the first place.
Paul Hollywood eating a Greggs sausage roll?
Has he lost all his taste buds suddenly?
He may well eat a sausage roll but would be amazed if it was a Greggs one.
Still, we are not talking about them ( Greggs) in a good way Annie .....that’s something at least.
Bet this thread is in the newspapers, Twitter etc by now.
When was the last time you had a Greggs sausage roll, lemon?
It hasn't bothered me in the grand scheme of things. I'm a non believer. I can see how Christians may be offended by it. But they have very cleverly got everyone talking about their brand haven't they?
I'm perplexed as to why people have shouted racism at the Tesco ad though. I think Tesco has bigger things to worry about it, when it's come to light that they are paying their temp Xmas staff via a prepaid Tuxedo card instead of into their bank accounts! (No choice offered!) These poor people then have to PAY to withdraw their OWN WAGES which takes their wages below minimum wage! & there is an annual limit on how much money you can withdraw too!
So for me greggs aren't the worst big brand this week
Sandi said the young research assistants were sent out to Greggs for a sausage roll for him.
I have just read that the world is going to end tomorrow so perhaps God is angry after all!
Apparently there is a hidden planet which is either going to collide with earth or cause catastrophic earthquakes and storms. (I think it is the same planet that was supposed to destroy the earth in September - it obviously got held up, probably popped into Greggs to buy a sausage roll!)
I am a devout atheist but I still thought it was in poor taste and I too am looking forward to the parodying Islam hinduism Buddhism Judaism and any other religion. It's all too easy to mock Christianity and while I think it is all nonsense and given too much prominence I think we should try to be sensitive.
I am not religious but I do think that for Christians it very upsetting. Whatever we think it’s about tolerance and not offending people who have different beliefs from you.
I don't think it's acceptable to do something that may be construed as belittling another's faith and so I think this promotion was misjudged - and actually not very clever or funny.
However, it appears that such events provide a welcome opportunity for those who enjoy presenting the Christian church as an underdog or victim, whereas in fact it is extremely wealthy and powerful throughout the world. The same applies to Judaism and Islam.
I find the various rituals, modes of dress and strange rules of all these religions mystifying and feel that the world would be a more harmonious place if there was no religion. I realise that those who have religious beliefs find that view equally mystifying.
If a religion chooses to ostracise or even murder people because they have offended their religion, I don't think that reflects particularly well on their religion and suggests that people follow it out of fear.
If your own religion takes a more tolerant and humane approach I think most people would find that commendable. I wonder if Jesus would have approved of all the outrage and bad feeling expressed about other religions because of the rather silly actions of an advertising department. I would have thought he would be far more concerned with things that are really an offence against humanity - and I acknowledge that many committed Christians are far more interested in providing practical help to those that need it than in getting in a rage about a sausage roll.
DJ = You missed out the northern from that insult of the bakery firm, Day6.
Why on earth would 'northern' be an insult? I am from the north. What a strange thing to say.
people of all religions should be accommodated in a sensitive way so that we can live together. Greggs in my opinion need a sharp lesson in cultural awareness.
That's exactly it GoldenAge
Well said. If there is fairness and equality amongst all then Greggs need to think about whether they would be OK about offending Islam too.
I don't think that will happen. That's why I think it's not fair to take a pot shot at Christianity or any other religious group.
There are several companies I boycott now for my own personal reasons so, although I am an atheist, I will add Greggs to my list for not understanding what poor taste is! For example, I also boycott any companies which use halal meat (Subway, KFC- wouldn't eat there anyway if someone paid me!) and those who came out to support the Remain campaign (Asda, Virgin). The only way companies will change their behaviour is if your custom is withdrawn.
I just think this is going to become the way of advertising, for now. A questionable ad; everyone talking about it. Job done.
but in expressing such offence they are taking one step along the same road.
I am sorry but that is complete bollocks!
It is wrong to protest, to express concern? On social media? Openly?
You think Christian concern with this stupid image is in the same league as the fanatics who attacked the Charlie Hebdo offices?
How offensive.
Hell's teeth. A left-winger against protest. Some protest is OK, but not Christian protest?
How hypocritical.
Greggs have scored a winner here.. you are all talking about it and advertising them for free!
Why is it okay to have penguins in a nativity play?
Nothing to do with Christian protest but with religious convictions which are never based on reason or on any logical considerations, but which are based on faith. This has arguably been responsible for so much death and destruction it is impossible to count the numbers. Protest based on a reasoned argument seldom leads to such excess. I have tried throughout this thread to discover the reasoning behind the objection to the image but have been criticised for doing so. So the only conclusion I can draw is that the complaint is more emotional and faith based, exactly the same as the bombing. I'm not suggesting any of the people who have posted on here would be involved in a bombing just pointing out that the same reasoning (or rather lack of reasoning) leads others to extreme actions.
Why not have penguins in a nativity play unless you mean Greggs sausage rolls are made from penguin flesh.
Not many penguins where Jesus was born, Annie.
Trisher, I became a Christian at the age of 30 after a three-year rational investigation. I was very sceptical and had many objections, but I wanted to know what was true. I am one of a long line of people to do so. Have a look at www.reasonablefaith.org/ and leestrobel.com if you don’t believe me, or John Lennox’s debates on YouTube. (He beat Richard Dawkins in one.)
I am a committed Christian but not that bothered about Greggs’ advert.
BTW the number of people killed by atheist regimes such as Stalin’s or Mao’s far outstrips the number killed in wars or persecution involving religion. (I have seen the numbers counted and no doubt you could find them online.)
The first crib my daughters did on their own was really something to see. The shepherds were made from wooden clothes pegs, the donkey was twice their height , green plaid donkey which one of my girls were given as a gift from Scotland . A priest friend came to bless it and was rather surprised to see cows, chickens, lambs and PIGS in the stable, he asked nicely should pigs be there, elder daughter said - yes, God made them same as the cows and .Noah must have saved them in his Ark, the crib plus pigs were blessed.
I didn't know that .Jen, next you will tell me Mary didn't give birth on 25th December because there is no birth certificate,
