Jesus replaced with a Gregg's sausage roll.

The Guardian would have us believe that only 'flaky' Christians are likely to be upset by Gregg's depiction of the Nativity, placing a sausage roll in the manger.

So, Christians are 'flaky" (oh so witty, not) to be upset?

I am no longer a church-goer but I was brought up as a Christian, as were many of us I suspect, and I am offended that Greggs think it is OK to offend as they have. Not only that, journalists like this oh so lofty sneering one place the blame for any offence on silly Christians who are obviously not normal if they have faith.

It really sickens me, this media hatred of certain groups when some are beyond criticism.

One journalist suggested all religions are open to parody and it is par for the course. I'd suggest otherwise. Make fun of Mohammed and you'll be blown to smithereens. Think Charlie Hebdo.

The hilarity the defaced manger scene has caused over the internet puzzles me. Greggs in their insensitivity have become the comic heroes and Christians, for believing in Christ's lowly birth, are the idiotic 'right wing' reactionaries, according to left wing media.

I am cross at the power of social media to dictate what we should think, but also on behalf of my truly lovely Christian friends. One told me she has 'turned the other cheek'.

How do you feel?

I wonder what Jesus would say to anyone who cannot forgive someone for telling them that they had said some un-Christian things? Something about pride and modesty and a conviction that they cannot be less than perfect, something about the Pharisee who when he prayed said, "I thank thee Lord that I am not as other men are"?

I like Greggs steak bakes. Very tasty lunchtime snack.
Is there such a thing as a down market bakery? Who knew?

Anniebach Wed 22-Nov-17 10:22:57

Are you writing a book on how to climb Everest Trisher ?

Jalima1108 Wed 22-Nov-17 10:20:57

However, when I quote the teachings of Jesus it appears some think this makes me someone who doesn't understand.

I did ask up-thread (I think it was this thread) if you are a theologian Gracesgran

Although someone who has studied comparative religions may have an in-depth knowledge of Christianity as well as others, I would think that that would necessitate a dispassionate view of religion in general.

Or perhaps that we should focus on the good works of Greggs and ignore the mistake. The huge amount raised for charity, the 'seconds' sold in the shops in the poorest areas at half price, the focus on staff well-being.
There's that Christian prayer isn't there about asking for forgiveness- "as we forgive those who trespass against us". Some of the Christians who have posted on this thread should be seriously worried about Judgement Day. Not much forgiving going on here.

Anniebach Wed 22-Nov-17 10:15:00

GG, you constant criticism of Christians and your use of quotes causes me to believe you haven't the foggiest what being a Christian means only what you believe what being a Christian should mean.

Rather like a person who writes about how to climb Everest but has never climbed even the Malvern Hills

I would agree loopyloo. However, when I quote the teachings of Jesus it appears some think this makes me someone who doesn't understand. Very strange.

It makes me ask myself if, as they call themselves Christians, they know these the teachings and if knowing them they apply in their lives. Alternatively is 'Christianity' just a hook on which to hang their need to have an opinion about culture and tradition.

maryeliza54 Wed 22-Nov-17 09:19:24

I absolutely agree with you there annie.

Anniebach Wed 22-Nov-17 09:07:13

some find they can care for more than one or two things

loopyloo Wed 22-Nov-17 09:03:51

What would Jesus himself have thought? That perhaps we should be focusing in bigger issues? Fighting bigger battles like the care and protection of our children and the mentally ill?

Anniebach Wed 22-Nov-17 08:48:28

You do not see anything you understand GG because you do not understand or want to .

GracesGranMK2 Wed 22-Nov-17 08:43:41

I know it was the same someone Lemons. I expect most people do. I do not think 'He' said anything about you deciding how companies should advertise more about you looking to yourself and your sins surely (motes and beams).

I think Greggs and those who work for them are probably your 'neighbour' too and yet some are wishing them ill.

Where is the Christianity in attacking a company that produced 50 Advent calendars you dislike. You expect those you tell they are doing something you dislike to accept it. I don't notice posters who 'dislike' what Greggs did accepting Jesus' call to turn the other cheek.

If fact I do not see anything I understand to be Christian in the way people who are using Christianity have put their argument forward. You cannot even apologise for offence you gave in the past.

maryeliza54 Wed 22-Nov-17 08:35:27

Terribull that’s a cheap comment

lemongrove Wed 22-Nov-17 08:25:20

Actually, it was about that same someone, Jesus, being born since we will soon be in Advent.

If nobody said anything ( when they disliked something) to companies, then they would carry on doing it.
That’s why petitions etc are started and letters written to newspapers.

I ( and many others) dislike what Greggs did, you ( and many others) may not dislike it, even find it amusing.
We are all allowed our say.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 22-Nov-17 08:18:03

My point was that this was about someone dying. Dying for them to have everlasting life. Dying for the forgiveness of sins.

Not dying for an argument over a sausage roll.

TerriBull Wed 22-Nov-17 08:02:24

"Sad" not really in the great scheme of things. I'd reserve that sentiment for the two posters on this thread who have just lost a child.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 22-Nov-17 07:23:17

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

So that they could argue over a sausage roll, decide they are superior when it comes to knowing if said sausage roll is a wicked sausage roll and wish ill on the producers of the sausage roll.

Sad, isn't it.

durhamjen Tue 21-Nov-17 22:12:24

Yes, that really annoys me, Eglantine, when they change the name ever so slightly and hope people won't notice.
I always look for the Fairtrade trademark.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 21-Nov-17 21:01:31

This, not me Lemons as I am sure you are able to read.

Eglantine21 Tue 21-Nov-17 20:59:42

Yes so I am. Fair trade and Fair to Trade. I knew Sainsbury had gone for something that sounded almost the same.

lemongrove Tue 21-Nov-17 20:47:25

This will follow me....... sounds a bit sinister, like a stalker.?
I think I can live with it though.
That’s the trouble with those who hold onto grudges, they can’t move past things.
It seems a strange grudge to hold though, especially as you have a low opinion of Christians, according to the things you have posted on this thread.
I think I shall have to ignore your posts now on this subject.

durhamjen Tue 21-Nov-17 20:47:12

While you are correcting yourself, Eglantine, Fairtrade, not free trade. You are getting mixed up between Brexit and tea.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 21-Nov-17 20:43:25

So much for your Christianity which we hear so much about Lemons. You were in the wrong. You know it but you are putting yourself above the truth.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 21-Nov-17 20:40:47

I have said I will not forgive you for the aspersions you cast and I will not. You obviously will not apologise so this will follow you while we are on GN. If you thought my comments unkind that is all you needed to say.

lemongrove Tue 21-Nov-17 20:36:36

Presumably ‘she’ is me GGM2 and if I once said that I thought your comments were unChristian ( on whatever subject) then so be it.I think it may be better for you not to hold onto long held grudges in this way, life is too short.
Perhaps I thought your comments were unkind.
Shall we move on.
