I've just been reading about reverse advent calendars, where instead of having a piece of chocolate or whatever every day for advent, you put something into a foodbank every day of advent. Sounds a better way to spend £24 than buy Greggs advent calendar., although the £24 at Greggs will go towards its charitable work.

I was in doctor's waiting room feeling quite stressed and low, and the only other person there was an elderly gentleman. Local radio was on and they reported the "sausage roll incident". We both burst out laughing, and decided there were much worse things happening in the world at which to be offended. I am not a Christian but respect their views, and in the great scheme of things think this is quite petty but has achieved the aim of massive publicity for Greggs.

Greggs made £832,573 for Children in Need.

What on earth has children in need and universial credit to do with a sausage roll in place of the Christ Child in a crib .

I think both those things have everything to do with the issues on this thread - and why are you so uncharitable about Greggs charity - all charitable giving attracts tax relief - are you against all charity. Or is the charitable status that churches have different?

Why are people so easily offended these days? The advert was possibly I'll thought through, but "offensive"? Seriously? And I am also fed up of the "they wouldn't dare offend Muslims/Jews etc etc, when offensive stuff is said about them all the time.

Christian Today have the right attitude, and deserve some respect for their excellent response to the Jesus/Greggs sausage roll fiasco:

Yes Paddyann I know the sectarian religious divide exists in parts of Scotland as well as Ireland and as far as Scottish meaness is concerned, I would concede it's annoying to always be lumbered with a hackneyed stereotype. In spite of having many arguments with my catholic parents about their religion, I now feel there is a need to stick up for Christians these days because it seems increasingly that every minority, bar them, are allowed to be sensitive about the most innocuous remarks and issues so much so that speakers are often banned from university campuses and the like. If we are to regress in this way then I think there should at least be a uniformity about it.

I agree completely with you Day 6 - as an atheist who was brought up in a Christian family, I am not offended by digs as any religion as long as they are not hugely public attacks because as we have seen on several occasions, people who do make digs at Islam are imprisoned, tortured, executed, and other members of society are punished through terrorist attacks. So what's good for the goose is good for the gander I say, and especially as we live in what is still a Christian country all manufacturers and service providers should respect that - just as an aside I bought sausages in Marks and Spencer yesterday and the cashier put his hand inside a plastic bag before he would handle them. I had no problem with that because it showed understanding on the part of the store, and the cashier that people of all religions should be accommodated in a sensitive way so that we can live together. Greggs in my opinion need a sharp lesson in cultural awareness.

However are you not falling into the same stereotype by branding all Christians as uncaring due to your experience of the religious divide you have experienced in Scotland. I married into a different church than my own, there was no question that I would be disowned, neither was my husband by his family. We were welcomed into whichever church we chose to go to - we tended to alternate.

I really don’t see why for one moment I should respect Christianity or any other set of religious views - homophobia, misogyny,intolerance are/have been rampant for centuries through organised religions. My only rules are that if I visit a religious building I observe the rules in place - anything else is fair game for criticism

I didn't specifically mention Christian speakers, although if I had the time I would Google that, I may later. However, it's common knowledge that all manner of speakers have not been allowed a platform in our universities, because they've offended some faction or other, obviously not Christians because, as we know, they should suck it all up. Germanine Greer is just one example.

Greggs are very culturally aware. That's why they do all the charity they do in the north east.

They have just been doind a beach awareness programme with the schools up here and Surfers against Sewage. The beaches in the north east are the cleanest they have ever been. Only two have been said to be average, with the rest being good or excellent.
That's cultural, isn't it, whether you leave rubbish around on the beaches, and what you put in the water, just as much as whether you eat sausage rolls or fillet steak.
