Well I for one don’t need to go back to the crusades- the recent child abuse scandals across the RC and Anglican churches and how they were lied about and hidden will say all I need to about the sheer hypocrisy of Christianity

Christians hijacked the Pagan Midwinter Festival.. Perhaps Pagans are offended by the Christian symbols. Honestly, each to their own - why fuss about trivialities?

I thought it was fake! Unbelievable and insulting. I’m disgusted. As others have said, no-one is allowed to criticise certain other religions or we’re racist, but Christians are fair game apparently. The UK has sunk beneath ludicrous PC nonsense to the detriment of the indigenous population.

The other day I asked Minibaggs if she'd heard/read about the Greggs sausage roll in the crib and the sausage roll advent calendar. She said no. I told her that some people were offended by it. She asked why. I told her because they felt it was insulting to Christianity. Having cottoned on to the ridiculousness of a Greggs sausage roll advent calendar she said: It's not about Christianity; it's about sausage rolls.

Quite.

At which point I'm thinking, Christianity 'stole' the midwinter celebration from the pagans and called it Christmas. Now the non-religious are 'stealing' it back. Like it or lump it.

Also the song "You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you...." is trickling through my brain.

Don't get me wrong. I've absolutely no objection to Christians celebrating Christmas as the birth of Christ but they nee to accept that they don't own all the imagery associated with the story. Christmas belings to us all to celebrate, or not, as we think fit.

Christmas belongs to the whole of Western civilisation, not just to those who identify as Christians. There are millions of what Richard Dawkins terms "cultural christians". The traditions associated with Christmas are theirs to use as they will.

So we now understand the logic of an atheist , Baggs claims atheists too own ! The imagery of Christmas, the crib, the Christ Child, The Holy Mother, all of whom atheists believe are a work of fiction.

So sad that she turns away from what is the greatest joy for Christians, knowing the love of Christ, accepting that love

This sausages roll story has given publicity to the Birth Narrative! It is such a wonderful story that has lived through the centuries. It shows a young family being helped in difficult circumstances. And it has started a debate about the the Christian story. God moves in mysterious ways.

How weird considering that the gospels were written mostly by people who had never met Jesus and that they are only the parts which the catholic church has deemed it suitable for people to read. The bits they didn't like were withheld.

I think most Christians are aware of that trisher - some of the other gospels are available to read although some were lost.

I'm so sorry that I dont "hear" Jesus when I've read the bible...its a book of myths and legends.Written when people were much more gullible than they are now.There are many ,well written ,well researched books about the man.Books that say he existed BUT he didn;t die on the cross,he was taken down before dark and to a place of safety to be cared for .That place where he was "seen" on Easter Sunday that sparked the "risen" story .I know some of you will be offended by these theories but honestly WHICH version is the most likely?

Of course Christmas belongs to all of us to celebrate or not as we see fit - amongst my family and friends, we celebrate our love and friendship, we exchange gifts, lovingly and carefully chosen, we eat and drink together enjoying the pause from our everyday world. We think of others and make sure those we know that would otherwise be on their own have a place in our homes and round our tables with a present under the tree. This year the dgc are taking part in the reverse advent calendar for our local food bank ( without a sausage roll in sight). A tree will be decorated, a wreath on the door, we often attend the carols by candlelight at the local church. I love Christmas - it’s far too good to be just left to the Christians amongst us

Why not call it Yuletide, Winter Festival, Saturnalia, Winter Solstice then?
