Have a secret life on Gransnet?
Do you all share with your partner and family all the things that happen here?
My H would no longer understand but even when he did he wouldn't have been interested and would not have understood the concept of talking to strangers and then just how involved we become in each other's lives.
I could not share with him all the sadness that is happening on here and I find that very hard for me as I long to share to help me with my feelings for my virtual friends.
I think he has become withdrawn but I now realise he has never been a sharing person.

Yes it's quite secret for me. I sometimes tell DH about something I've read but I would hate him to start reading what I wrote. To me it's personal. He doesn't understand on-line chatting. To him that's a pointless activity.

My H knows I'm on Gransnet and I've told some of the family too, but none of them know my GN name which is nothing like my real one. I sometimes discuss threads in a general way with my H or read out funny comments but generally he thinks it's just one more way I waste time on my smart phone or ipad (and he's right!)

DW thinks I spend too much time on Gransnet, although she looks at it too. I think she prefers Mumsnet. DDs know I look at it, and I think they know my nom-de-keypad, though they would never look at it themselves.

My family and friends who know are seriously surprised. I'm not a great social media fan in general. This was innocently divulged when I was asked about recent purchases of a cordless vac and a window vac. 'How did you decide?' 'Read very helpful and interesting reviews n GN'. 'What's GN?' Ominous silence followed on every occasion. They're surprised but didn't comment. I look in every day. Like everyone else, I can find it stimulating, informative, eye-opening, uplifting, saddening and fun in general. On the 'nasty' days I just move on (somewhat sadly) and when I've no relevant contribution to make on other threads I still read them with interest. A general thank you to all those who have benefitted me and know not is being expressed now. I look forward to continuing indefinitely.

I mention Gransnet to friends who I think might like to join, I think it is a bit of ‘me-time’.

I don’t really discuss it with Mr FF as he isn’t a great social media fan, although he does play internet chess and has online chats with other chess players around the world between games.

I have found GN wonderful, sharing and getting ideas, and find it invaluable for putting my own family worries into perspective or getting a different view on them. Haven’t ever tried the recipes or the games .... will look them up, must be more adventurous!

Am also a member of Mumsnet but so often the default reply of many on their site is very strident, ie recommending never see so and so again, or sue the b.....ds, etc.

I do love reading objective comments from people on GN who just know the facts of a situation as described by the poster without getting involved in personalities or past history.

Don’t have a partner anymore but my two DDs know I’m on here and they think it’s great cos they are on Mumsnet and tell there friends. I look forward to reading the posts everyday and getting involved if I have any input to give.

I am sure GN has given many the support and information they were seeking.
Having to involve your nearest and dearest in your problems maybe something you do not relish doing.
With GN you can be anonymous.

Agree lemongrove, we have more humour..We're are not as serious as MS because we have learned to laugh at ourselves..because we are GN! I'm a widow and same as most of you, my DH wouldn't have been interested. But I share a few bits here and there with DD.

sarahellenwhitney Sat 11-Nov-17 10:43:39

My late DH was a' in one ear and out the other' unless
it involved our family, close friends , OR, the third person in our marriage which was DH's work.

I sometimes mention to my sister or a friend if a particular topic may be of interest, but not much else really. I wouldn't go so far as to to call it a secret life as such.

sandelf Sat 11-Nov-17 10:30:19

Mmm, well it's private rather than secret. - Most of our time is spent together, even when in company so it's good to have a 'sounding board' of people who don't know us both. Really find the chat useful and learn a lot!

Now all on my ownsome now - love reading the diverse comments and thoughts on Gransnet - years of experience, wisdom, advice and idiocy all on my IPad. All of us trying to fathom the rich tapestry of life despite having to wade through some of the poo ( appears some get more than their share) along the way.

Sheilasue Sat 11-Nov-17 10:17:48

Sometimes I do. Not often though I may add. I think a lot of people on this thread live totally different lives to me and maybe some others do too,
What I like about gn you are such a kind hearted lot and some of the stories people tell have brought me to tears.its so nice in this sad world that someone out there cares enough to give encouragement to someone else. Bless you for that.

Blinko Sat 11-Nov-17 10:10:18

I sometimes mention GN if there's a topic that comes up in conversation which has been under discussion. DH knows I'm on GN and anyway, I see no need to keep it secret. In fact, I think it's something more people could benefit from. So I tell em grin

luluaugust Sat 11-Nov-17 09:56:42

DH knows I am on GN, occasionally share something if I think he would be interested, can be quite revealing to get his thoughts sometimes.

Daisydoo2 Sat 11-Nov-17 09:46:38

My family are aware I am on GN but like lemongrove they think it's for old people. Whatever next!

Diddy1 Sat 11-Nov-17 09:43:39

I occasionally tell my DH of some things written on GN but he isnt really interested.
I really enjoy Gransnet, and have made some nice friends here.

glammanana Sat 11-Nov-17 09:12:19

I've always been quite open as to being on GN and listen to the comment "oh you on Granny Thingy again" I don't tell any one my user name

dizzygran Sat 11-Nov-17 09:09:27

My OH has no interest in social media so I haven't mentioned gransnet to him and I don't talk about the posts or responses. I have mentioned it to friends I think would be interested or would benefit from a "chat" to people with lots of views and different life experiences.

Stansgran Sat 11-Nov-17 08:20:39

I keep this to myself . DH hates me being on line or at least on iPad. I think he feels I should spend more time pandering to his every whim and cooking delicious food for him?

I was lucky enough to attend a meet up today, and on my way back to the station, I popped in (at his suggestion) to see my son at his office. He asked me how the lunch went. Then he said “did you know any these people?” “Only on line”, said I. “Is it one of your fishing forums?” he asked. “No”, I said. “If I tell you who it is, I may have to kill you!” He didn’t pursue it further! DH knows about Gransnet, but I don’t think anyone else does.

Imperfect27 Fri 10-Nov-17 17:32:24

I do not share much of my GN life with my DH ... He is sometimes inquisitive and sometimes (l think) a little judging/disparaging so l enjoy telling him that GN is full of interesting, intelligent, kind, 'switched on' people and l really enjoy it when something topical comes up e.g. on the national news and l can tell him how we are already on to it!grin But essentially this is my R&R space and he respects that and leaves me to it.

Cherrytree59 Fri 10-Nov-17 17:32:16

DH just roles his eyes and asks "on gransnet again".

Lemongrove I think maybe we have more time for humour, most of the mums are juggling work, homelife and kids.

Some of the antics on MN makes me smile thoughgrin

callgirl1 Fri 10-Nov-17 17:24:21

My husband knew, but wasn`t all that interested in what went on on here, my family know I come on here, but nothing else.
