What have you 'always wanted' and did you get it?

I've just remembered I always wanted long hair too - so much so that I used to wear a grass skirt on my head and plait it and make a pony tail - the fact that it was green never really worried me! Now it is long but I'm never satisfied with it - maybe I need to find another skirt!!

I read all the Biggles books when I was around 10 - 12 and always wanted to be a pilot. They wouldn't let girls join the ATC in those days, so it never happened. But then there was the family's gift of a flying lesson when I was 74 and how I wished I could have done it when I was young! They once gave me a balloon flight too which was great fun. I guess I have always had my head 'in the air'. Now I would really like to see this planet from space, but I don't think that is going to happen!

I've wanted to move house after we'd been here for 2-3 years, we're still here 40 years later. I still dream of a nice little bungalow but my DH refuses to move.

There's nothing I'm particularly bothered about getting now, but when I was little my much-loved granddad used to say we could buy a Shetland pony and keep it in the garden. Of course, it was a sort of a joke and I suppose I knew that but there was always a part of me that hoped it might happen. Although I don't yearn for a Shetland pony now, if I see one anywhere it always brings back memories of my dear granddad.

When we married we were given a beautiful dinner service. Those were the days when at Sunday lunch or when visitors came round for a meal one put the best china out. What I wanted and didn't have was a nice coffee set to serve coffee after the meal.

It was 15 years before I could afford a coffee set and by then the move to more casual eating patterns had arrived. I had it in a cupboard for about 10 years, hardly ever used it so gave it to a charity shop.

Actually I think the pencils I lusted after were called Derwent pencils.

I had a longing for Lakeland coloured pencils, too. I had to wait until I was an adult to get them.

A horse. I was given an ex racehorse by my boss when I was 23, 6 weeks after I got married, that was fun telling my new husband! Brilliant feeling though after all those years and I had little money so my boss let me root around for all my tack and old rugs etc, really lovely just like I imagined, had him ten years although I had to loan him out but it was a good arrangement where I had full access and no cost.

Lewis Hamilton got his private jet and (alledgedly) went to great lengths to avoid paying £3.5 mil VAT. How much money do these greedy, avaricious people need? All the tax avoided by these millionaires/billionaires is money not going into the public purse for hospitals, schools, nurses, doctors, teachers et al. we ordinary JAM's pensioners pay our way, why should the filthy rich be any different?

I loved Lakeland coloured pencils. I can still remember getting a new box with all the colours lined up in order. When I had a set with my name printed on I was in heaven!! I don't think today's children wuld be so enraptured with that as a present!

When I was small there was a very upmarket stationery shop in the centre of Glasgow which sold fantastic boxes of coloured pencils. I think they were made by Lakeland and the best was a fantastic selection of (I think) 144 different colours displayed in a box which concertinad and had three tiers. I could not imagine anything more wonderful and extravagant. I think one Xmas I did get a box of 24 colours but I can still visualise that amazing collection.

I always wanted long hair and was so envious of friends who had plaits and I loved watching their mums do them . My mum was right though when she told me that my thick wavy hair was not suitable to grow long ... boo hoo .

Always, all my life I've wanted a sister. Also wanted a Porsche Carrera but never got that either. Now I'd just like good health.

A donkey. No, I never got one but once I had a home of my own I got cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, birds, tortoises and a duck.

I wore glasses from the age of 2 and always wanted to be able to bin them. I was compliant and wore them; my sister buried a few pairs and was allowed to go without hers! 3 years ago I had plastic lenses to replace my natural ones and love the freedom I feel.
PS I had saved the money for a first time abroad holiday to Mauritius but DH wouldn’t come with me so I spent the money on me.

I always wanted a bike, and had one when I was 50 for Christmas (but have yet to ride it lol), and I have always wanted a grandfather clock, still waiting for that one.

A horse - my family would say "where are you going to keep it" and I would say "in the garden". We lived in the centre of London and had no back gate from the garden - so then they would say "how are you going to get it out" and I would say "through the hall". And I really meant it!!

Can't think of anything, wanted a large dolls house, a bike, a camera and got them. A car when in my teens, got it. My wedding band made from Welsh gold, got it. Daughters , yes two.

Just remembered, wanted my parents to have my two year old brother adopted -I was sixteen, they refused for some reason.

As we were ‘normal’ working class people, and quite hard up when Mum left dad and had to keep two of us herself, I did not really have any ambitions for special things as I never thought I would have to money to obtain them.

My dear OH and I started off with fair but not great salaries but somehow our frugal living paid off and I am better off now than I thought I would be in my wildest dreams. We have all the ‘stuff’ we want and I have a lovely watch and nice jewellery.

My MiL once said to me, ‘ What is important to me is not having things but knowing I could have them if I really wanted them.’ That really struck me at the time and I realised that holding off splurging but knowing I could if I wished to kept my money in the bank and made me feel well off. After a while not spending becomes a habit and pays off in a little put by for a rainy day.

So there is nothing that I didn’t have or couldn’t have, really. If I had the money for a private plane I wouldn’t buy it.

I always wanted a dolls house as a child but there was never the money to spare. My husband bought me one for my 50th birthday, many years later I'm in the process of renovating it.
