'Unspoken' forum rules?

To my mind, this, like any other public forum is a 'free space' for us all. I have posted over many years, on many different forums, but never before encountered what seems to be an applied undercurrent of 'pecking order' based on longevity of membership. Maybe this is peculiar to GN. I truly do not know, but I am not imagining it. These seem to be the unspoken rules that SOME want GN to run by:

Long established posters may exercise the right to post sharp comments without apology or explanation.

Newbies must forgive this, but not respond (most likely because they 'don't know the back story to that poster's life.' )

Newbies should not have the audacity to suggest that someone may be out of order.

If Newbies want to disagree with established users, they are making 'accusations' and must provide evidence for any points raised.

PM - ing anyone is 'talking behind someone's back.'

If a newbie writes frankly and openly - in a polite way, they are still 'overstepping the (hidden) mark and it is ok for someone more established to take them to task about it.

Gransnet should be understood as a 'club' and new members should not comment on how it operates. If they do they can expect to be put in their place.

I am not being fascetious here. I genuinely want us to chew this over. These are the messages that I think do SOMETIMES get sent out. Is this what other people believe to be the case?

Brilliant analysis*Eloethan*. As others have said, I also enjoy the cut and thrust of the politics threads although I do not post there. That's my choice, not that I'm fearful of potential responses. The threads and posts I avoid are the "preachy" ones,I exercise the free will to skip right past those as soon as I see the posters name. I enjoy the fun of the games and post there enthusiastically. It's
true that the same names appear on different kinds of threads but I see that as like minds not cliques. I have been brought to laughter, and often tears, many times, and have marvelled at the support, wisdom and compassionate responses shown to cries for help. I use GN in my own way and have no wish to change it.

Anniebach Mon 09-Oct-17 03:42:57

Eleothan, that is rubbish, do tell, have you including me in your right wing number? So f so you have cooked the books

The far left cry of Corbyn bashing from you, just refusal to accept not all who criticise that man are right wing , I am sure I criticise him more than anyone here but I am not right wing. So you need to be honest , go back to your abacus and include my posts with left wing. Perhaps someone will explain to you that all the Labour MP's who criticise Corbyn are not right wing.,

Anniebach Mon 09-Oct-17 05:03:33

Sorry my reply to durhamjen was a little messed up so will try again.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to talk to like minded people , there is much wrong with telling a poster - get off this thread, and you did this durhamjen

lemongrove Mon 09-Oct-17 08:18:11

Actually Eloethan I don’t think that your stats are a brilliant analysis at all, simply that you have trawled some
Of the politicical pages, and chosen the ones not started by very left wing posters, so obviously the posters joining in are a mixed bunch. If you had chosen threads started by left wing posters you would see a difference, but even then how do you know they are right wing when they could be Lib Dem or like Annie, not fans of Corbyn,it seems that you are assuming an awful lot.

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-Oct-17 08:25:08

Blimey, Eleothan, you've been busy! Did you definitely mean posters, not posts? I didn't think so many GNers ventured onto the Politics forum, but I don't go there myself very often, so could be completely wrong.

kittylester Mon 09-Oct-17 08:41:29

Exactly Lemongrove

Surely it's all relative anyway. I'm sure some right wing posters are seen as being to the right of Attila the Hun but are, actually, just slightly right wing and quite nice people to boot. grin

Anniebach Mon 09-Oct-17 08:41:48

typical , expect McDonalds maths are equal to Eleothans

Iam64 Mon 09-Oct-17 08:44:22

Thanks Eloethan, I found your analysis interesting.

ninathenana Mon 09-Oct-17 08:46:06

This has now become a thread about the politics thread.

As one who joined a few weeks after the begining of GN I have seen no evidence of cliques. Yes there does seem to be a group of members who PM each other though I could name one and or those who have regular RL meets but I see that as a group of posters who have become friends just as you would in RL.
I have one or two people I share PMs with basically to keep details off the public forum, not to gossip about others.

ninathenana Mon 09-Oct-17 08:47:26

couldn't name one

Anya Mon 09-Oct-17 08:48:08

As one who’s been on GN since the very beginning (and the founder of Argy Barry) I have to agree, in general terms, with imperfect.

But it is much less cliquy (cliquey?) than it used to be. Yes, in days gone by very dubious PMs used to invite people to join the ‘gang’ (worded more subtly of course - more an invitation cum welcome, but that’s what it amounted to) or, in one instance I was included in a group PM inviting me to join in the hounding of another poster to get rid of her from GN.

Very nasty.

The person who sent that PM is still around and will know who I’m talking about.

I personally wouldn’t enter Soop’s Kitchen for reasons I’m not prepared to state on here, which is how Argy Bargy came into existence. And while I’m all for a bit of cut and thrust (I’ve had my fair share of posts deleted) there’s a line which ought not to be crossed.

I don’t post much these days, but I do pop in now and again.

lemongrove Mon 09-Oct-17 08:53:12

Wish you would pop in to The Argy Anya for wine or cafe and a chin wag, we miss our founder!

petra Mon 09-Oct-17 08:57:10

Why is it always assumed, on the political threads, that if you have a comfortable lifestyle, you vote conservative ?

Anya Mon 09-Oct-17 08:58:42

I will if I’m around later on lemon ?

Marydoll Mon 09-Oct-17 09:02:55

Anya, I'm sure your post has given some members food for thought. I'm shocked at the PM you received.

Please pop into the Argy, we do miss you. That goes for anyone else who is lurking outside the Argy. All are welcome.

Jane10 Mon 09-Oct-17 09:04:34

I also was asked via PM to complain about another poster. I declined as I hadn't been following the thread concerned and couldn't understand why someone could become so aerated by an Internet forum post.

dbDB77 Mon 09-Oct-17 09:08:10

I think Eleothan's analysis is simplistic and subjective.
Simplistic because there are so many shades of opinion and belief - a wide ranging spectrum that she has reduced down to sides of a coin - right or left.
Subjective because Eleothan herself has decided that posters are either right or left - how does she know?
I wholeheartedly support Sarah Champion & I disagree with John McDonnell's economic policies - hence I've been called a Tory on a politics thread - not true - so if I'm there as a right-winger in your analysis Eleothan please remove me from the figures along with Anniebach.

Eloethan Mon 09-Oct-17 09:12:26

I think your posts speak for themselves anniebach. They are invariably indistinguishable from those who identify themselves as Conservative supporters or those who pronounce themselves to be politically "neutral" but whose posts indicate them to be anything but.

If you and others disagree with my analysis, then support your criticisms by doing your own.

Anniebach Mon 09-Oct-17 09:14:54

Come off the orange Eleothan, you cooked the books , I am anti Corbyn but loyal to the Labour Party and you know this. Shame on you .

durhamjen Mon 09-Oct-17 09:23:28

Annie, if anyone looked at your history, they would think you had had a personality transplant.
Two years ago you used to support those you now call trots, communists or far left.
You never seem able to say left-wing; it's always far left.
Shame on you.

I agree with Eloethan's analysis. Can anyone support their idea that political threads are dominated by left-wing posters?

trisher Mon 09-Oct-17 09:37:24

M0nica I didn't think anyone dared resurrect the 'magic money tree' argument after TM and company managed to dig up 2 billion from somewhere to buy the DUP. Still I will say that the Labour manifesto was fully costed unlike some others.
Thanks for the post Eleothan it was interesting.
Anniebach I know you won't answer but perhaps you could enlighten me about which Labour policies you do endorse? I understand you consider yourself a follower of Blair but I still don't understand if you favour a return to PFI building, more privatisation of the NHS or something else. Oh and many of us buried our principles and stood behind Blair when he led the Labour Party, it was only an illegal war that made us abandon him. It would be nice if you could do as we did and at least allow JC a proper attempt at leading a united party.

Primrose65 Mon 09-Oct-17 09:44:32

I get frustrated when the arguments from the politics threads spill over onto unrelated threads.
It puts people off posting.

kittylester Mon 09-Oct-17 09:45:45

Oh dear!!

whitewave Mon 09-Oct-17 09:46:12

Well done eleothan for your patience and putting the non left wing moaners right. They don’t like it though do theygrin. That’s because they know you are correct.

durhamjen Mon 09-Oct-17 09:46:18

Apparently May is going to find billions more next year to save us from the cliff edge when she withdraws us without a deal.
That must be from that magic money tree that she's had hidden so Labour couldn't find it.
