Your drinks of choice?

As with food, I think particular drinks can have particular associations and evoke memories for us.

My 'drinks of choice' have changed over the years, but the ones that have a stuck are

REAL coffee - a must first thing in the day.
Camomile / Peppermint tea if I have been poorly.
Lucozade - ONLY after a tummy bug or similar - can't stand the taste of it at any other time.

Christmas / Easter: cherry brandy / port. These taste extra nice if you have them with chocolate finger biscuits ...bite off both ends and use as a straw 0- a bit like trifle!

Home-made snowballs.

Prosecco, a dry white / rose before a meal.

Red, red, wi-i-i-i-ine ... Friday = wine 'o'clock day!

What floats your boat?

I drink lots of tea, and changed to decaffeinated to be kinder to my bladder. Was told that still contained some caffeine and in view of the quantity I drink, tried redbush and fell in love with it! Still have one cup of proper caffeinated tea first thing though.

Can't stomach real coffee, but any milk-based drink is fine by me. A mug of full fat milk often replaces a meal if I'm in a hurry.

Guinness and blackcurrant but only in the summer in Cornwall. Only ever drink coffee when abroad - can't stand the smell or taste here for some reason.

Greyduster Wed 04-Oct-17 11:44:25

petra where do you get your Nordic Tonic? I've never heard of or seen it, but I googled it and I'd rather like to try it.

Red bush tea first thing and mid afternoon, instant coffee all through morning and gin with Mediterranean tonic on Saturday evening, but has to be in 'proper' gin glass!

I'm supposed to avoid alcohol these days, but a large G&T is lovely, used to drink lots of beer (by the pint, not very ladylikeblush) or cider in the summer, Tesco actually stock a good alcohol free cider.

Love a nice glass of Rose, again some good non alcoholic ones on the market.

I need 2/3 cups of coffee per day, often don't have 1st one until after Lunch & it must have 2 sugars in it to hit the spot.

Weak black tea with a Devon Cream Tea (I live in Devon, monthly treat)

Fruit teas, I like lots of different ones always without sugar.

I like Ginger Beer & Elderflower Cordial also FeverTree Tonic Water. I start the day with a mug of very weak Marmite (ok I can hear you saying YUK, love it or hate itgrin)

Lilyflower Wed 04-Oct-17 12:00:43

Good Kenyan coffee in the morning, ultra weak builder's tea all day. On Fridays we have Cava and on Saturdays Champagne. Cointreau at the weekends too. I am spoilt but we buy it all when it's on offer, usually half price.

Im not keen on strong proper coffee - makes me feel sick. Mainly have tea or weak instant coffee (decaff in the evening.) drink theboccasional white or rose wine. Also elderflower or lime & soda. But for the occasional evening treat I like port or tia maria!

goldengirl Wed 04-Oct-17 12:07:10

A Baileys when the GC have just left
A cup of peppermint tea when feeling a little down

Craftycat Wed 04-Oct-17 12:08:04

Freshly brewed coffee- latte preferably
Roibush Tea- even if I can't spell it
Silent Pool gin- honestly you just HAVE to try it!!
Chilled Prosecco or white wine
A good deep red wine

shysal Wed 04-Oct-17 12:19:47

Tap water, tap water and tap water.
Caffeine free Diet Coke very occasionally, when family come to eat.

Caro1954 Wed 04-Oct-17 12:23:17

Strong black tea first thing.
"Real" coffee with milk mid morning.
G&T in the evening.
Sherry at Christmas.
Drambuie for a treat.
Elderflower anything NEVER!

TellNo1Ok Wed 04-Oct-17 12:26:05

Was making a punch the other day and could only find Cointreau .. so had a quick slug to check it was OK... it was delicious... absolutely delicious...

Imperfect27 Wed 04-Oct-17 12:40:02

Ha ha TellNo1Ok ...the unexpected tipples are always the best! I came across a miniature bottle of 'left over' sloe gin the other day when I was rifling through cupboards. I think know it was my DH's 'wedding favour' from when his niece married a couple of months ago. But then he left it ...grin Delicious indeed! Hic!

gulligranny Wed 04-Oct-17 12:42:53

Thompsons Punjana tea first thing and at various points during the day.
Proper coffee with hot milk around 11.30
Rose or red wine with our evening meal (white gives me indigestion)
Pimm's with all the trimmings
Elderflower cordial diluted with ice-cold soda water
My husband's home-made sloe gin on a winter's evening

Greyduster Wed 04-Oct-17 12:47:36

I have just been googling gin - when did there become so many artisan gins? It feels like a sweetie shop for gin lovers out there!

Maranta Wed 04-Oct-17 13:06:38

Regularly:-
Copious amounts of regular tea throughout the day, sometimes made with loose leaves,
One proper coffee mid morning
Glass of red or white wine evenings.

Occasionally:-
G&T
Dry cider
Lager (summer only)
Ginger wine (winter)
Malt whisky

Tea, tea and more tea. Weak milky coffee sometimes if I'm out at the shops or a garden centre. A nice, light beer is also very acceptable.

silverlining48 Wed 04-Oct-17 13:57:32

Earl grey tea, lady grey if i can get it

G&t with lots of ice with lemon or lime or even cucumber depending on the gin.
Cold sauvignon or pinot in summer
Full bodied red wine in winter

not all at the same time of Course and only on special occasions.

Melody1963 Wed 04-Oct-17 14:16:13

I do love a good gin &tonic in the summer. I know gin is very in vogue right now and lots of places serve their G&T in a Spanish style glass but I get so much pleasure from a quality gin in a tall hi-ball glass, lots of ice and a slice of lemon. It's my summer favourite.

summertime is also time for Campari, it immediately whisks me back to Italy (where I first tasted this deliciously bitter and dry drink) Campari with soda or orange juice tastes of summer sunshine.

Winter it's time for Whiskey. Whiskey and a literal drop or two of water, served in my whiskey glass that I bought in Scotland several years ago and has somehow survived in my house (glass or crockery breakages are a weekly occurrence)
My favourite whiskey being Cal Ila is peaty and smokey.

Red wine I love, but it doesn't love me back and send my skin haywire, but for a glass of Apothic (I've only ever seen it in Sainsbury's but it's amazing and I highly recommend) I will risk a breakout of red, angry skin. Just one glass mind you. Anymore than that and I look like the elephant man.

I'm not much of a hot drink lover but do appreciate a well made hot chocolate with a flake in it and a few marshmallows on top.

I don't care for sweet fizzy drinks, cola and the likes but a lime and soda is very refreshing.

Last but not least champagne. Oh I hope I never become an alcoholic as life without champagne is unthinkable. In our house the go to champagne of choice is Lansons. Not a fan of cava or prosecco so much now I've discovered a love of champagne, we don't even need the excuse of a celebration.

annifrance Wed 04-Oct-17 14:34:03

Gillybob champagne shouldn't be kept for more than 5 years! Enjoy it now and put this year's bottle in the posh box.

Real coffee, redbush tea, turmeric gold , camomile and French make hot chocolate (not so sweet).

Chilled dry white and rose wine, I love red wine but it's migraine central if it's got too much tannin, G&T, white rum with fresh lime juice, sugar cane and fizzy water, my homemade Framboise, Cassis, Limoncello and Elderflower cordial.

annifrance Wed 04-Oct-17 14:34:59

And tap water, lots of!

HillyN Wed 04-Oct-17 14:44:58

You're right, drinks do have associations, not all of them good. When my DH and I got engaged we both got very ill after too many vodka and limes and just the smell of lime in a drink puts me right off it!
My favourites are:
Yorkshire tea, first thing in the morning and around 4pm, with a custard cream or bourbon biscuit.
Fruit cider with a pizza or takeaway at the weekend.
A glass of milk in summer or a hot chocolate in winter, before bed.
When we are on holiday in France, a G & T before our evening meal and a glass (or two!) of chilled rose wine with it. When it's hot a glass of peach and raspberry cordial mixed with really cold water.
A glass of Leffe blonde reminds me of a bar overlooking a lake and mountains where I first drank it. A darker Belgian beer takes me back to a brewery in Bruge where we spent a lovely afternoon on a cold day one February. A milkshake with an ice cream float reminds me of a childhood family visit to Wicksteed Park, when my Mum said I couldn't have one and my Nanna ignored her and bought me my first ever.

Daisydoo2 Wed 04-Oct-17 14:57:34

Real coffee, reminds me of the fresh coffee shops in Germany where I lived for many years.. and of course chocolate cake to go with it. Still can't face anything anisede since a run in with Pernod 40 years ago tho!

GrandmaMoira Wed 04-Oct-17 15:56:20

I drink tea all day, only occasionally a weak coffee. I also like wine, red or white, my favourite being a light red such as Pinot Noir.
Lots of people like G&T but I can't bear tonic.
