Your drinks of choice?

As with food, I think particular drinks can have particular associations and evoke memories for us.

My 'drinks of choice' have changed over the years, but the ones that have a stuck are

REAL coffee - a must first thing in the day.
Camomile / Peppermint tea if I have been poorly.
Lucozade - ONLY after a tummy bug or similar - can't stand the taste of it at any other time.

Christmas / Easter: cherry brandy / port. These taste extra nice if you have them with chocolate finger biscuits ...bite off both ends and use as a straw 0- a bit like trifle!

Home-made snowballs.

Prosecco, a dry white / rose before a meal.

Red, red, wi-i-i-i-ine ... Friday = wine 'o'clock day!

What floats your boat?

We would occasionally drink Trappist beer when we lived in Belgium. It had a similar effect on me, juggernaut!

A herbal or fruit tea starts my day, then glasses of water until mid afternoon when it's a cup or two of Kenyan AA coffee made in the 'wondrous gadget' which grinds and brews!
Dinner is back to glasses of water, usually cold, but occasionally hot with a lemon slice.

In very cold weather I like a hot chocolate, made with cocoa as drinking choc is far too sweet!

If I'm out, I drink herbal or fruit tea, or very rarely a latté or cappuccino.

Alcohol wise, I'm not really a drinker, but like a very occasional Irish Whiskey, Tullamore Dew if possible, with a tiny drop of water or dry ginger ale.
About three times a year I have a bottle of Tripel Karmeliet Belgian beer, which is 8.4% ABV, so I usually doze off shortly after drinking it!

Can't beat a nice cup of English breakfast tea.
Banana milk shake is an absolute favourite.
And tonic water. With or without the gin. Almost always without these days.
Lemon barley water seems to help my urinary tract to stay healthy.

Well, maybe your sloe gin is a safer bet. I 'know nothing' about wine-making, but wouldn't the alcoholic content mean it is ok, even after five years? Sip it and see I say grin. You first, of course ...

Greyduster Wed 04-Oct-17 21:33:53

Can you sign a disclaimer in case it is now toxic? I can't afford your prospective medical bills. What are the chances that it has gone off, do you think? Incidentally, I also found a bottle of sloe gin on Saturday that I made the year before last that I had forgotten about. You are welcome to help me drink that instead!?

Imperfect27 Wed 04-Oct-17 20:48:18

Greyduster t'would be sacrilege indeed! Shall I come round ...with a straw? I could bring some of the sloegin-- damson wine for trade? grin

The Wonderful Man enjoys grinding his own coffee beans for his morning coffee, then he alternates tea and coffee during the day and. When he gets home from work I can usually tell what sort of day he's had: tea - it was an okay day, wine or beer - a good day, but if he breaks out the whisky he needs time to vent!!
I usually have tea day and evening, with a latte once or twice a week and a glass of dry white wine on maybe four evenings a month. During autumn and winter we may have an evening tipple; whisky for TWM and (home made) sloe gin for me.

Lots of weak black tea and the occasional glass of ribena as I would drink too much left to my own devices, cold in summer and hot in winter, delicious!

Greyduster Wed 04-Oct-17 19:13:41

imperfect I have a demijohn of elderberry that has been in our garage since we moved here six years ago, and was in the garage of the last house before that. Neither of us has the courage to try it and I cannot bring myself to pour it down the drain (sacrilege!!).

Greyduster Wed 04-Oct-17 19:09:12

Thank you petra - I'll try and lay my hands on some!

meandashy Wed 04-Oct-17 19:07:20

A Bacardi and what nanabilly?? ?
I have switched between tea and coffee for years. I'm drinking exclusively tea at the moment. My neurologist suggested cutting coffee out. When I did try one (even though it was very weak) it triggered a migraine.
I used to enjoy southern comfort on the rocks, vodka lime & soda and something referred to as 'hooligan soup'... Guinness, cider and blackcurrant ? yummy

Imperfect27 Wed 04-Oct-17 18:19:33

Fantastic result today ...just opened a bottle of home made red wine given to DH by his brother recently for his birthday. Tastes like sloe gin!!!!! grin

Swanny Wed 04-Oct-17 18:17:40

Lots of lip-smacking drinks mentioned above smile

My regular daytime drink is decaffeinated coffee, no sugar and no milk. Occasionally I will drink decaf cappuccino or (ordinary) tea with milk if socialising in the afternoons. Can't stand Coke and other sweet fizzy drinks but will drink weak squash or sparkling bottled water on non-alcoholic evenings.

Preferred alcoholic drinks are Merlot or Chardonnay wines, dry chilled sherry as a summer aperitif, and a sweetish champagne for celebrations. Used to love gin & tonic or brandy & lemonade but the only spirit I drink now is an occasional home-made vodka with DDiL's parents grin

Nanny27 Wed 04-Oct-17 18:14:52

A good red wine after dinner most evenings. Gin and tonic sometimes. Strong black coffee in the morning a cold beer in the garden on a summer afternoon. When poorly, hot Ribena, it reminds me of being little. ?

Serkeen Wed 04-Oct-17 17:54:32

A bit old school are my choices but I love pernoid n black and love babycham and love shandy

TwiceAsNice Wed 04-Oct-17 17:53:10

Caffeinated tea first thing, any other cups in the day are decaf.

Sparkling or flavoured sparkling water ( I like cherry flavour the best) or tap water with a splash of orange juice if I'm thirsty. I occasionally drink Diet Coke. No sugary drinks or cordials as I am Type 2 diabetic.

I occasionally drink instant coffee as a change from tea but prefer "real" coffee made in the coffee maker and always have a latte when I'm out in a cafe, never tea as I like mine really weak.

Cold rose or white wine a couple of times a week. Red wine gives me a headache.

Champagne or Cointrau over ice on special occasions/ Christmas

Bacardi and Coke if I go out with friends for a meal and I'm not driving.

petra Wed 04-Oct-17 17:46:08

Greyduster
A bar owner friend ( in Spain ) buys it for us wholesale and we bring it 'home' when we bring the motohome back at the end of winter.
I've just searched it and there's lots on eBay at a reasonable price.

Caro1954 Wed 04-Oct-17 17:28:20

Ooooh forgot about Pimms! With lots of fruit so it must be good for you, right?!
And whiskey with an e so it must be Irish!
I love to think of you all enjoying your favourite drinks - alcoholic or not - cheers and thankyou for sharing!

MrsAllboys Wed 04-Oct-17 16:26:57

A cup of tea first thing in the morning....then coffee thereafter.

Red wine, most of the time.. (White if with a meal which is is light and delicate.)

G&T at the end of a long, busy day (in warm weather).

Tio Pepe at Christmas, always. It takes me back to living with parents when it was their daily aperitif of choice. (Happy days, although like most I was eager to strike out on my own!)

sarahellenwhitney Wed 04-Oct-17 16:03:30

A half pint of 'scrumpy' and a packet of crisps in the garden of my local when all the holiday makers have departed.

Witzend Wed 04-Oct-17 15:59:29

I was persuaded to try some cucumber flavoured gin with my tonic the other day - it was v nice. Might buy some, though don't usually drink it winter.

Otherwise I like
Black tea, not strong. Hate stewed or builders' tea.
Strong coffee with a splash of milk.
Elderflower anything
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
Have rather gone off red wine, don't know why

In summer, Pimms is nice.
In winter, a good Amontillado sherry.
Mulled wine!
And now and then, good old fashioned cocoa - I usually find hot chocolate over sweet.

GrandmaMoira Wed 04-Oct-17 15:56:20

I drink tea all day, only occasionally a weak coffee. I also like wine, red or white, my favourite being a light red such as Pinot Noir.
Lots of people like G&T but I can't bear tonic.

Daisydoo2 Wed 04-Oct-17 14:57:34

Real coffee, reminds me of the fresh coffee shops in Germany where I lived for many years.. and of course chocolate cake to go with it. Still can't face anything anisede since a run in with Pernod 40 years ago tho!

HillyN Wed 04-Oct-17 14:44:58

You're right, drinks do have associations, not all of them good. When my DH and I got engaged we both got very ill after too many vodka and limes and just the smell of lime in a drink puts me right off it!
My favourites are:
Yorkshire tea, first thing in the morning and around 4pm, with a custard cream or bourbon biscuit.
Fruit cider with a pizza or takeaway at the weekend.
A glass of milk in summer or a hot chocolate in winter, before bed.
When we are on holiday in France, a G & T before our evening meal and a glass (or two!) of chilled rose wine with it. When it's hot a glass of peach and raspberry cordial mixed with really cold water.
A glass of Leffe blonde reminds me of a bar overlooking a lake and mountains where I first drank it. A darker Belgian beer takes me back to a brewery in Bruge where we spent a lovely afternoon on a cold day one February. A milkshake with an ice cream float reminds me of a childhood family visit to Wicksteed Park, when my Mum said I couldn't have one and my Nanna ignored her and bought me my first ever.

annifrance Wed 04-Oct-17 14:34:59

And tap water, lots of!
