Sorry to hear of your loss MamaCaz.
I would never think of turning my phone off! I just set it to silent at night (alarm still works obviously).

My phone has a do not disturb which you can set up so that it does not beep during the night. But the alarm does still work. I find that very useful when it needs to be switched on overnight.

Thank you all for your condolences, though I didn't expect them and will genuinely think no less of anyone who doesn't comment on that aspect of my post.

I guess the alarm thing must depend on the make, rather than type, of phone. Dad's was an old, chunky pay-as-you-go, whereas mine is a (cheap) twelve-month-old smartphone.

I just wish i had known sooner that mine would do this - we were relying on it to wake us at 5am yesterday, so slept with it by the bed, switched on, and it kept beeping at frequent intervals to tell us that it had detected an open network. There must be a way of stopping that, but so far I haven't managed to work out how to do it!

Sorry for your loss. I've never used the alarm on my phone so have no idea how it works.

I've just tried it out on my phone and it doesn't work. They obviously expect you to keep them on 24/7.

Slightly off topic I lent my late Dad’s phone to a DD as hers was broken, just as a stopgap as she had a long drive on her own to do so did not change the number and totally freaked out when it rang showing Dad on the caller ID. ??

Very sorry to hear about your dad, it's the silly little things that really bring home exactly how much you have lost isn't it.

I thought modern smart phones didn't do this. I know the old ones used to do it, but I have often wished my present phone would do that so that I could save on battery and switch it off overnight.

I'll have to try it out again.
