Great rules!

I follow my gut instinct. I learnt a long time ago that while you can take some people at "face value" there others that you certainly cannot. Some people are givers while others do all the taking in all aspects not just materially.....learn to sort the wheat from the chaff. Never be afraid to say No ....if it's something you can"t do or don"t want to do you don"t have to justify the reasons .....just say no in a polite and friendly way. Too many people say yes to things that they don"t want to do and then desperately try to find reasons to wriggle out of when the time comes.....don"t be bullied into feeling you have to agree to everyone else"s demands.

one of my rules would be 'sleep on it' I have learnt from experience not to be too hasty to make judgements!

Not to be embarrassed and ask people to repeat things - esepecially their name!

I love your rules. My extras
Try not to take anything too seriously
I will be in the wrong, I will look silly - does it really matter?

No.5 is certainly a good one.

I've recently made another that I've learned the hard way. When dealing with "a certain kind of person": Don't ask. Tell.

"certain kind of person" being ones who find even simple negotiation, like making straightforward arrangements, difficult.

No 5 never let's me down. I've learnt that one the hard way.

Top of my list is also learn to say "no". It takes practice, lots of practice. I like your list especially no. 4 and am still working on that one!

Just be authentic.............never changed that rule and it has worked well for me, got me into no end of trouble too.

Not to keep putting off the things I don't want to do, like letters and phone calls.

Smithy Fri 08-Sept-17 13:09:12

Try not yo take things to heart and don't worry about people who don't matter.

We have 2 ears and 1 mouth. Use them in the same proportion.

I think the 'gut feeling' rule is one I need to remember.
Apparently, that feeling is part of our fight or flight response, but we tend to ignore it. I'm sure I do, but my resolve is to take note in future.

Ilovecheese Wed 06-Sept-17 13:27:41

Never take the sensible option just because it looks sensible, always take notice of your emotions. If what looks silly feels right, it probably is right.

After being taken advantage of (again) by a "friend" I have given myself a real talking to and have decided on a set of rules I will now try to follow:

1. Its not your job to solve everyone's problems
2. Don't believe everything you are told - double check
3. Never take anything for granted
4. If you need help - ask for it (finding this one difficult)
5. Trust your gut feeling

Anyone else have a set of rules
