Words you don't like, please, ladies?

I detest the word 'hate'. It is a very, very strong emotion and is used too lightly.

Women being referred to as 'girls'.

I hate being called hun, though I'm happy with ladies as a collective noun for women. I don't like lush which is a much overused word if someone likes something these days.

How about burglarize? What happened to burgled?

Oh, this thread has cheered me up on a miserable wet morning. Agree with all of them, plus bog/bog roll.

I had to smile at Anya decrying MissAdventures' post when I saw there were 4 pages of replies. Maybe a lot of us are puerile or are we in our second childhood?

I also had hubby or hubs and hate 'like' being peppered into every sentence, but save my absolute hatred for AWSOME ????

Panties !!! can not stand the word many years ago a male physio said the word when explaining what clothing I needed to leave it made me want to run out the room

I also dislike tits, titties and as a consequence cringe at the name Bristol - even though I believe it's a beautiful city!

I am enjoying this thread; it may have been done before, but newer members like me will have come along in the meantime, and - more importantly - language is changing fast, and this year we'll be hearing a whole raft (there's one to ponder) of new expressions that may or may not catch on.

I quite like many of the catchy new turns of phrase, and may use them playfully or ironically. Would I call a group of my WI members "guys"? I just might! But when we were discussing what we should wear under the short skirts we wore as Cheerleaders in the village Carnival - and my word, we were a sight to behold! - we only ever talked about "white knickers". The word "panties" did not cross our lips or even our minds.

I don't like the phrase "my good lady wife" or similar, but that's one I regard as old fashioned. I don't like the modern "babe" or "babes" either, but don't think anyone has ever called me that or would ever attempt to.

Here in Devon, people in shops may call you "my love" or "my lover" regardless of the gender of either party. I find that quite charming, but I agree about using "Love you!" as a regular greeting or way of ending a phone call - to me, that devalues a precious phrase that should be saved for special, tender moments.

What haven't I done to get a smiley??

Welshwife. The first recorded use of kids for children is 400 years before any recorded use for kids and it is far more likely that baby goats were named after children from words like 'kinder' which occur in several languages.

I don't understand why 'melt' added to food it meant to make it sound appetising. 'Tuna melt' sounds dreadful.

I mostly don't like words being combined wrongly like 'reason why' or 'abdicate responsibility' particularly when, for some unfathomable reason, they become popular and appear everywhere.

I find it hard to Like comments that include the word 'methink' even if I agree with them.

That should be before any recorded use for baby goats ...

I'm with riverwalk detest those words. Miss adventure I haven't seen a thread on this before either, and if I want to start a thread I'd like to think people will either join in or be kind with there words if it's been done before.

Jane10 Well said. I like language and like talking about it occasionally. People post lots of things that I don't enjoy discussing. I don't think they should stop for me. Some days there is nothing at all I want to discuss. That's just life.

Chairperson, spokesperson etc. It wouldn't be so bad if men holding these roles were also called that, but in my experience once a man is appointe to head a committee he will change the name back to chairman. It's a shame that the word 'woman' is so often seen either as rude and disrespectful (hence 'ladies' ) or used as an insult (women drivers). The word is too politically loaded, too - it's all too common for it to be used almost as a synonym for 'feminist' or 'lesbian' by people who disapprove of such groups.

As for the vexed question of how to address a group of people, for example if you're a chairwoman , how about 'Good morning (or whatever time it is), everyone'?

My pet hate is 'gifted'. And also like Jan51, I cringe with every comment on radio or TV apparently beginning now with 'So ...'

hate Hubby ,and swear woords of all varieties..swearing is not allowed in my home ..my family can curse until kingdom come anywhere else but not here ...and my friends all stick with my unwritten rule withut any problems .They dont run out of words without the sweary stuff

I really don't like it when out for a meal and the waiter/waitress addresses us as 'you guy's. Words I have a problem with are 'moist and 'flacid', make me shudder !!!
