Dreading a denture - any tips please.

Thank you Hilda. Yes I agree with the mourning part. I have paid for a private denture. I'm not sure if there is a big difference between private and NHS. I will go to Boots tomorrow to buy supplies - and maybe some yoghurt so I can eat, I've heard eating can be difficult - thank you.

Having a denture, no matter its size, is always more about the emotional aspect. It speaks of the passage of time and all that implies - loss of youth and vigour etc. Once you accept that many of us require a little something to compensate for the years passing whether its hair colour, stronger glasses, a replacement hip or false teeth then you can begin to accept it. (However, I'll admit that the loss of teeth does seem the worst!)
I think there is almost a sense of loss and a mourning for what has gone that needs to be taken on board. It will pass and wearing a denture will just become part of you and your life.
As to the practicalities I'd just say buy the best you can afford as you need to trust it and the way it fits. Take it out at night ( I even leave mine out on the odd day I know I'm not going to see anyone (expect nearest and dearest). Keep it scrupulously clean and ensure you have the best mouth hygiene you can achieve - soon as you are wearing a denture it can lead to problems with adjacent teeth and gums. Once you take that on board and get used to the little so and so you will learn to ignore and even forget it. All the best....YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

I have just had to remove my denture to count how many teeth I have on it (one front tooth and three others). I never remove it at night (I would probably forget to put it in in the morning!) I clean it as I do my own teeth and my grandson aged 7 does not know anything about it. He also does not know that his granda has full dentures. DH is in his 80's and had all his teeth removed when in his 30's. We watched a programme some time ago about how many dentists got very rich in the early 1950's removing teeth unnecessarily! I have a very good dentist and intend to hang on to my remaining teeth for as long as I can.

As I said I use a small dab of fixodent on mine, when I first had it fitted the dentist said it would make me feel my denture was more secure, I've continued to use it everyday. So no it doesn't move.

You're so right grannycakes. There is a stigma surrounding dentures and it is probably more worrying what other people will think. I just can't imagine having plastic in my mouth ?

My family know I'm having one, but I don't plan on taking it out except to clean - did yours move?

My denture is very small and never made me gag, felt a bit odd at first but nothing more, I brush just with a toothbrush and soak in steradent once a day.

Bit late posting but have just seen your post. I have a partial denture in the top but no one knows not even my family. Implants were not an option owing to gum loss. I forget its there but I'm scrupulous about hygiene etc though I never ever take it out at night. Good luck it will all soon cease to be a problem and fade into the background of your mind.

i have full dentures - top and bottom. The top set onl took about a week to get used to and I had no problems with lisping As I am a teacher I was really concerned about this.
The bottom set took a lot longer and much perseverance and adjusting but now I'm OK.

Other staff that don't know ave had asked if "I have had work done" as I look so much better and they can't work out what it was! I think we all need to be more honest about need for dentures etc. Not everyone can afford/or is suitable for implants and because we don't like to talk about it people are really nervous and upset if they need a denture

Thank you so much! Do you take yours out at night? And do you have to brush dentures or just soak in the steradent?
I hope I just manage to not gag and get use to it quickly -

I have 8 upper teeth on a denture. They look just like my usual teeth. Steradent also do a 3 minute fizzy cleanser and I pop my toothbrush into it at the same time.
Boots do their own brand which is a bit cheaper.
I also use the Cordasyl Daily Mouthwash.

You will feel a bit strange to start with but honestly you will get used to it really quickly. Also with regard to speech, it also only takes a couple of days to get used to it.

When I think of the time and money spent on crowns and replacement crowns, and trying to 'save' teeth, I wish I'd got the denture sooner.

I am truly not sorry I'm wearing a denture.

I've been told the plate won't cover the roof of my mouth and there are no clips.
I'm just really scared I think of dealing with it all.

That's cheap compared to the quote I had! Where did you go?

Yes, when gdc won't clean teeth they will end up like granny I warn them!!

I use Sterident, there is a 10 minute one. It hasn't affected my speech at all. Only I know they're there!
