Imperfect27, well said, I agree with your previous post, unfortunately, our poverty is not changing the car every 2 years and I think that a lot of people also think like this, although they won't admit it.

I think poverty is not being able to cover the basics: not enough food, heat, clothing.

I had never even thought about women not being able to afford sanitary products until it was raised on the Jeremy Vine show earlier this year.

Poverty means exclusion, being disenfranchised, becoming an 'underclass' . Frankly, NOT going without a holiday or an extra bottle of wine!

Yes ,what do we class as real poverty?
Is it not having enough money to buy food or children not going to school because they don't have shoes?
Or not being able to have a holiday or replacing worn out furniture?
There is still plenty of the latter occurring, but is it poverty?

What the OP has failed to say is that Snow gave a James MacTaggart memorial lecture given this year in Edinburgh.

In order to get a complete understanding I had to read the entire edited extract. it is more thoughtful and comprehensive than the OP suggests.

annsixty I think it is good that he has 'admitted' it. ('Admitted' is a loaded term too!) I think the fact that he has spoken up shows some humility and honesty which is what is really needed. I rather like the Snows ... people cannot help being born into privilege, but good if they try to make a difference - thank God for all the 19th century philanthropists!

No, even those of us who muddle through life with 'enough' do not really comprehend what true poverty is like.

What is real poverty ?

It is very different us thinking it, to one of them admitting it.
Then our views are confirmed as being sound.

I like John Snow and admire his willingness to admit his difficulties in being able to walk in poor people shoes. He has integrity and far more balance in his reporting, than most political commentators like Neil and Humphreys.

In fact I think many of us find it difficult to understand
even if we are not from a public educated background.

Very few of us know what real poverty is like.

I don't know why you think your view was out of step with other people's.

Don't most of us know that the elite/media/politicians/the 1% are out of touch with public feeling?
