This is an incredibly selfish, self-indulgent post, I'm sure, but I need to vent a bit even if I get a kick up the jacksie for doing so.
Today my DH and I went to the funeral of a dear friend's mother who died last week. All their extended family were there. It was a long funeral, with various members of the family sharing their memories of a lovely lady, their mum and gran - which she was - my DH knew her well when he was a teenager though I didn't know her as well. I really liked her and she was warm and caring.
They all stressed how intelligent she was, how high-achieving. Almost all her children and grandchildren have gone on to academic or high-status careers. During the long service I began to notice feeling uncomfortable and that I was comparing myself again to others (a tendency for years but recently I'd been a lot better).
I'm all too aware of my mediocre abilities and averageness (if there is such a word) and talking to the grandchildren made me feel so...ordinary and insignificant. I have lived with this feeling much of my life with two brothers who went to Oxford and whose careers brought status and quite a bit of dosh, whereas I went to teacher training college and didn't rise to any dizzy heights in my teaching career, putting my family first out of choice.
I don 't know what I'm trying to say here. My head says it's not money, it's something else....the feeling of being insignificant and not terribly intelligent has haunted me for decades. We also didn't push our daughters into careers - we encouraged them as best we could, provided support and as many good experiences as we could. We encouraged them to go for what inspired and excited them but sometimes I wonder if we did the right thing! DD2 works for herself and is happy doing so; DD1 isn't yet really established in a niche but has done some university teaching, OU teaching and tutoring and plans to extend that now her little boy is a toddler (almost).
I might well feel better tomorrow but right now I'm feeling a tad challenged - the whole day has re-awoken feelings of uncertainty and low self worth I thought I was conquering. Not so.
Finally, i feel deeply ashamed that I'm feeling like this when it was our friends and their family we were trying to support as best we could.
If you've read this far without falling asleep or hurling something at the screen, thank you. I'd welcome any words of comfort because I feel rather lost right now.
