French being my first language, it would have to be "Dinner" - I have to say, when I first came here, the subtle class differences between supper/dinner/tea totally confused me.

I read somewhere that the best way to hang the toilet paper s over the top and away from the wall as it is much more hygienic this way, and from what a PP said about the children's, errm, messy fingers, it seems to be correct !

I hate scrabbling at the wall for the end of the roll. Hotels wouldn't be able to do that first sheet folded thing if the roll was the wrong way round!

It should be hanging your way OP. In a posh hotel the next sheet can then be folded with the pointy bit at the front.

Here's another vote "to the front"!

In my experience as a housekeeper, the paper hangs the other way and is put into a point or it is put at an angle against the roll and tucked into the cardboard tube.

Pulling forward is easier, and so to be avoided if you have toddlers, or cats.

I'm with you, Fireflies, though I don't think it really matters. However I do think it was extremely rude of your friend to change over your loo roll. I would not dream of doing such a thing.

Definitely loo roll to be pulled from the back. This prevents children (and adults) giving the roll a spin and ending up with a heap of paper on the floor and then probably re-rolled. Ugh! However I agree that it was impolite for your friend to have changed it. I also find it a bit naff in others' bathrooms to find the first sheet folded in a V-shape - what's that all about?

I had a complete shock when for the first time in 26 years, someone other than me had put on a new loo roll. Was son's girlfriend, who is lovely and thoughtful. But she put it on the wrong way!! Resisted OCD urge to change it!

DH sometimes puts it on with the end at the back.
I always change it to the front.

The DGD couldn't reach it otherwise!

This thread is to blame for my turning a roll the other way in someone else's house today. Then I thought better of it, laughed, and turned it back again

Despite that moment of madness, I really can't see why anyone would get worked up over this. There are two ways of doing it and neither is 'wrong' - it is simply a matter of personal preference, surely!

Years ago, I was told that hotels only hang the loo roll "over the top" so that the maids could put the folds in to "prove" they had cleaned the room. All it really proved was that they had gone through the door but I understood this was the reason for over the top loo roll hanging.

I lived in a number of truly grotty student flats back in the day. If the toilet paper went back towards the wall, it got damp. (Cardiff is a very wet place!) I always put mine to hang outwards!

It is certainly the front. It can then be folded in a peak to show that the toilet has been serviced.

I'm so confused - I've taken my roll off the holder and put it on top of the cistern.

If the roll hangs against the wall the end needs to be at the front. If the roll hangs free from the wall the end needs to be at the back. In my house I have one upstairs and the opposite downstairs!!!

The right way is the way you were brought up to do it, which is no consolation at all if you are married to a man who insists that the roll should hang the OPPOSITE way round.

I decided early on to swallow my distaste over this matter, as it hardly seems worth ruining a good marriage over. I would however infinitely prefer it, if he would only hang the blasted thing the other way round! Loose end away from the wall. My mother insisted on this, as otherwise you could hear the paper being torn off. Quite true in the days of the wooden roller type holder.

I do wonder what she would have made of my son's bathroom, which is so poorly built that everything that takes place there is all too audible in his kitchen?

Does it come as any surprise that I return from visits to DS and DIL constipated?

Wasn't brought up one way or the other. We used Bronco when I was small!

Don't think it matters as many have said. I have only pondered it recently; that is after I retired. Says it all I suppose.
