That's just meaningless Darnsarf. Anyone can have an opinion about a post being meaningless. We are talking about one person choosing not to see another persons posts. Perhaps you haven't read the rest of the thread but just decide you want somewhere to be angry but, as an example, me not seeing your post would not stop anyone else seeing it unless they decided they didn't want to interact with you - all individual decisions. You will be suggesting we have to read every thread next - people don't you know.

No post is meaningless, they mean something to the person who wrote them.

I can decide what I think is relevant to any discussion and can decide to ignore that person if I want. It has nothing to do with anyone else.
Just saying a hide button would make it easier. Nothing wrong with that.

Who are you to decide who's posts are meaningless? What gives you the right to decide that they add nothing to a discussion? When you own your own website or forum you will be able to decide who does,and who doesn't post their comments. Until then you'll just have to get used to everyone having the same rights to post their comments, however inane you may find them, whether you like it or not.

I do sometimes question why granset don't allow things that other forums do eg 'hide' and 'edit'. If other forums didn't allow them I'd understand but I feel that they don't think we're capable of using such facilities correctly .

By meaningless, I mean literally those that have no meaning, not those you just disagree with; those posts by people that add nothing to the discussion, but feel they have to make a comment, otherwise people will forget they exist. A bit like trump's tweets as opposed to Obama's.

The thing about the 'hide' is you get to choose not to see those which are meaningless to you. Everyone who finds them meaningful can continue to read them and they can hide the person they think makes meaningless comments. It could be you or me (I know that's difficult to believe) but we would never know and the occasional person we decide to hide wouldn't know either but they would stop winding us up.

Well it could Blinko but don't you think you would have to think really hard about whether GN was the right place for you if that happened? I really don't think it is likely. No one, should it be possible and GN agree, which I actually doubt they will, has to use it but those I really don't think those people who don't want such a thing should dictate to those who might.

It could mean you only see the posts of like-minded people.
You see all the posts if you don't hide anybody.

So would that mean that potentially you could get to a point where someone was simply posting to themselves, if everyone else had chosen the 'Ignore' button several times on various topics on that person's posts? Not sure if that's where we wan to end up?

It is possible to have both NannyandGrampy. On one forum I visit they have an ignore for both individual and topic. I am not sure that they have it for a single thread though.

I think when I talk about a hide button I mean a whole thread Swanny so my active list would only be filled with those threads I am interested in.

I think it can be done on Mumsnet ( but happy to be proved wrong lol) .

That would leave room in my active list potentially for more things of interest to me especially if the algorithm that does it can learn from what I like?

Yes, Elrel, but a lot of folk stay black because they want to stay anonymous. That's fine, but it would be nice to know if they should be addressed as he or she, and roughly where they are. Very roughly. As often their posts would then make more sense.

Sometimes a poster has an interesting viewpoint and it would be good to read what they have to say on other topics.

Could we please have search facility which enables you to enter a poster's name and see all her posts on different threads in reverse chronological order?

Blue is those with profiles, black those without isn't it? Or have I misunderstood?

I would like it if folks names could be dark blue. Not quite black. I find it difficult sometimes not knowing whether to refer to a poster as he or she. And several post on Mick's morning thread about what the weather is like without any indication of where they are. Just an approximation would be nice. I mean they could say I'm a bloke from London without giving too much away.
