Why do you come to Gransnet?

Aside from the virtual cake obviously... grin

It would be really helpful for us to know what you like about Gransnet, and what draws you to the site? Is it the general chatter and social aspect, the advice, the competitions, the word games, the articles, the webchats. If you were to pick your top three (or if you can't think of three then just one will do!) reasons for logging on, or what keeps you coming back, what would they be?

What would be the point of an open forum if threads and Gransnet were only for the 'Like Minded' to post to each other?.

About Gransnet :-

'At its heart is a buzzing forum where users 'debate ' the hot topics of the day, support each other through tough times and share a laugh.'
-

There are plenty of Sites / Forums / Political Activism Sites etc. etc. that are for the 'like minded'. Gransnet is more open and long may it remain as such.

It has to be said that when posters are told to 'leave a thread / shut up' then those who want a cosy relationship with only like minded posters forget this is supposed to be an Open Forum.

Choice?

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 17:53:28

Censorship, more like.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 17:56:31

Ana that just doesn't make sense. In what way is it censorship? If I chose to leave because I did not want to read one or two people's post is that censorship? It is just a way that enables those who want to continue to do so.

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 18:02:41

Pressing a button to 'ignore' certain posters is censoring the thread for your own purposes. Nothing to do with whether you choose to leave or not.

durhamjen Mon 31-Jul-17 18:04:10

It's only censoring if it gets rid of it for everyone.

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 18:08:32

Well, I'm sure most of you would 'ignore' the same few posters. The only problem you'd have is if someone 'unignored' commented on a post from an 'ignored' poster and asked you your opinion on it.

Why can't you do emoticons, btw?

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:10:12

It does NOT censor the thread. If I chose not to listen to or read something that is not censorship. It does not affect the thread for anyone else. What do you think your insistence that everyone has to read posts they don't want to is? It can probably be seen in many ways but it is encroaching on bullying. It seems you would think it was OK to hold a person in their place not allowing them to ignore a comment. Why do you want to control other people?

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:11:10

So your problem is that you think that 'most of you' might ignore you Ana? You sad, sad, person.

Jalima1108 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:11:49

Jalima, it is compulsory to read every post?

No, unless one has a compulsion to read everything. Like the notices on the bus or in the hospital waiting room.

Why not just think 'Oh, I won't bother to read that person's posts and skip them?'
Of course, you could miss something of vital importance or get confused about how the thread is going if you do.

Could you 'unignore' then and go back to see what you missed?

Jalima1108 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:13:47

What would be the point of an open forum if threads and Gransnet were only for the 'Like Minded' to post to each other?.

Yes, that was one of the conclusions I came to when pondering The Meaning of Gransnet.

It would not be like Real Life then would it?

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 18:14:39

What??? Where did all that nastiness come from?

Don't bother replying.

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 18:17:29

I couldn't give a damn if anyone chose to ignore my posts, GG2, but you seem determined to force everyone to agree to your way of thinking. You sad, sad person grin

Jalima1108 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:21:34

What do you think your insistence that everyone has to read posts they don't want to is? It can probably be seen in many ways but it is encroaching on bullying
But no-one is standing over you with a pistol to your head forcing you to read what you don't want to!
Or even just making you write out one hundred lines saying 'I must read every post'.

You can skip and ignore what you don't like at any time. Why does there have to be an ignore button?
Self-filtering would not be difficult.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:27:35

I am not in the least Ana. It is not my decision to make but some people seem determined to wrongly interpret just what a 'hide' button would allow - by the sound of things because they are afraid they may be the first to be ignored (although I doubt that is true).

It seems to me that there are a little group who like winding people up on the politics threads - rather than discussing the politics (something I think Primrose referred to elsewhere as 'spamming the thread') It seems some think they may be ignored when all they can rise to is this 'spamming' which others could then choose to ignore.

Anniebach Mon 31-Jul-17 18:27:41

I haven't read one post which state - you must read all posts .

Just takes a little self control and a dose of commonsense, if you don't want to read a post - just scroll, past it .

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:33:11

No Jalima they are not but if you find it too much the only alternative is to leave the thread or the forum.

Personally I come on here for the discussion and am quite happy to go elsewhere if it gets silly or unpleasant but one of the biggest complaints we saw on this thread was about the politics threads and people feeling they could not join them - not me, other people. This is a possible solution This is a possible solution that I have seen work elsewhere and I think others have too.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:37:16

Ana "this nastiness" is exactly the same as has been said to me.

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 18:45:41

So that's your excusse, is it? hmm

GracesGranMK2 Mon 31-Jul-17 18:51:44

It's not an excuse Ana. What I said is what I thought about your posts. I am not making any excuse just pointing out that this appears to be the cut and thrust that happens. I may not like it but it is how these things go on here.

- and it really isn't all about you.

Ana Mon 31-Jul-17 18:59:22

Yeah, like I think that! grin

rosesarered Mon 31-Jul-17 19:57:47

GGM2 ......it's not all about you either ( do you have to be insulting all the time? )

Saying 'you sad sad person' to Ana ......unbelievable.
Are you spamming this thread by any chance?

Nobody needs an ignore button, it's snowflake-y.

Norah Mon 31-Jul-17 20:03:43

OMG

Norah Mon 31-Jul-17 20:05:51

Maybe everyone could just be kind and nice.

Jalima1108 Mon 31-Jul-17 20:10:17

Norah smile that was requested before ...
