Why do you come to Gransnet?

Aside from the virtual cake obviously... grin

It would be really helpful for us to know what you like about Gransnet, and what draws you to the site? Is it the general chatter and social aspect, the advice, the competitions, the word games, the articles, the webchats. If you were to pick your top three (or if you can't think of three then just one will do!) reasons for logging on, or what keeps you coming back, what would they be?

I like coming on GN because I am a procrastinator.

There, I have confessed in public.

durhamjen Sun 23-Jul-17 19:26:40

Does that mean you'd rather be on here than doing the ironing, Jalima?

Jalima1108 Sun 23-Jul-17 19:59:11

I very rarely do ironing djen !!

I will have to write a list of outstanding jobs and shame myself into turning off the pc and getting on with them.

Members of GN are so many and so diverse, as are the threads that there cannot be anyone who likes everything.

I read and post over a wide range of subjects, but I have never even opened one of the Games threads because I just have no interest in games at all. That is not a value judgment on those who do, it is just an expression of personal interest - or lack of it. Similarly I rarely look at the pedantry threads because I find they get - well - a bit pedantic. Similarly I used to enjoy political threads but don't anymore. Apart from that I usually investigate, if only briefly, most other new threads and follow them up if they interest me.

Having posted earlier I keep coming back to see what others have to say, when I should be doing an online grocery order. Should I first look at the forums (fora?) for Discount Codes, or Food, or Local chat, or Health, or House and Home, or Product Tests and Reviews, or ... ? Help!!

Jalima1108 Sun 23-Jul-17 23:12:45

Discount Codes? I've missed that one.
And Product Tests and Reviews.

I wonder what, if anything, GNHQ will change as a result of us saying all the things we like ( and dislike!) ?

merlotgran Mon 24-Jul-17 13:18:21

I don't really understand why this thread was started in the first place. We often start threads of our own stating what we do or don't like about Gransnet. Everything on here has been said before. hmm

Ana Mon 24-Jul-17 13:34:42

Yes, and we're obviously still not going to get an edit button...! sad

Anniebach Mon 24-Jul-17 13:34:49

I have found the thread most interesting

rosesarered Mon 24-Jul-17 15:32:40

A quote button would be very useful too.

Maggiemaybe Mon 24-Jul-17 16:19:47

One forum I'm on has a hide button so you don't have to read anything posted by those who you know will annoy you. Granted, many threads don't make a lick of sense, but it's good for the blood pressure.

Ana Mon 24-Jul-17 16:24:43

Yes, that would be useful - but you could hardly post much, could you? Your opinion (or its opposite) might have already been voiced by one of your 'hidden' felow forum members and they'd soon twig who had 'hidden' who! grin

Maggiemaybe Mon 24-Jul-17 16:45:53

This is very true, Ana. grin

I've mentioned a similar button several times but no reaction from GNHQ. On one forum I now watch more than go on it's called an 'ignore' button. No one else can tell you are using it but it certainly helps.

merlotgran Mon 24-Jul-17 20:46:17

If I want to ignore someone I just do it. Why have a button?

Ana Mon 24-Jul-17 20:47:49

Exactly.

durhamjen Mon 24-Jul-17 21:02:47

With an ignore button for some people you'd hardly know the difference.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 24-Jul-17 22:07:38

I understand what you are saying but if you have an 'ignore' or 'hide' button you just don't see what the other person has written which can make for a much calmer read. With the one on the forum I mentioned all you see (although obviously no one else can) is 'you are ignoring this person' followed by 'Show me the post' which you can click on to reveal the post if you choose.

Surely, if GNHQ can do it and think it is worthwhile you can have no objection as obviously those who don't want it never have to use it. I think it might encourage more of the people who are feeling they would like to join in the politics threads but currently don't.

merlotgran Mon 24-Jul-17 22:11:56

But how do you follow what's being said/going on?

The politics threads move at such a cracking pace that if bits of it were removed I'd totally lose the plot and that's not difficult in my case. grin

durhamjen Mon 24-Jul-17 22:25:16

Not removed for everyone; just for you.
The only bits that would be removed would be from people you do not want to follow.
Otherwise it would be just mayhem. Like HQ banning everyone.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 24-Jul-17 22:43:17

I think it's a choice you make merlot. Do you join in something you are interested in with one person 'hidden' or do you stay off the thread because you are finding it difficult, possibly because of just one person? Some people sound as if they are choosing the latter.

You tend to get a sense of anything they may have added to the discussion because other people may answer them - you just don't see whatever it is that makes you consider not going on the thread.

NanaandGrampy Mon 24-Jul-17 22:56:28

It would be nice to have a hide button for whole threads allowing only threads of interest to be in your active selection and def an edit button .

If FB can make it work I don't see why it couldn't work here .

durhamjen Mon 24-Jul-17 23:00:55

There is one. It's called "I'm on".
Or you could use the watch this thread button then just go on watching.
Or, for those who can't stand the political threads because they are too political, don't go on them.
So easy.

I don't think an ignore button is a good idea. If a person posts something that you know is factually incorrect or which you believe is a misrepresentation, you can say why you believe what has been said is wrong. If you are not aware of what has been said, you cannot challenge it.

I also don't like the idea of a "like" button. Having recently read a quite frightening book by Dave Eggars called "The Circle", I am suspicious of the way in which people are drawn into a system where responses to complex issues are reduced to a tick or an emoticon.
