Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. –
Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage,
I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox
when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study,
so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Pepsi I’d been drinking. I’m going to look for my checks,
but first I need to push the Pepsi aside so that I don’t accidentally knock it over. The Pepsi is getting warm,
and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Pepsi, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye–they need water. I put the Pepsi on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I’ve been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I’m going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I’ll be looking for the remote, but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:
the car isn’t washed
the bills aren’t paid
there is a warm can of Pepsi sitting on the counter
the flowers don’t have enough water,
there is still only 1 check in my check book,
I can’t find the remote,
I can’t find my glasses,
and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,
I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all the damn day,
and I’m really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem,
and I’ll try to get some help for it,
but first I’ll check my e-mail….

Don’t laugh — if this isn’t you yet, your day is coming!!

There's a somewhat risque addendum to that piece

They are spending far more on research into viagra and cosmetic surgery than on alzheimers research, so in a few years' time there will be elderly men and women walking around with huge erections and pert breasts and not the slightest idea what to do with them

Brilliant made me giggle!! Definitely not me,I'm a list maker to get me thru the day that way everything gets done that's on the list and I'm hardly ever distracted.

Aboslutely Brilliant now I know im suffering from a real disorder with its own acronym not just being forgetful.
Thank you it has made me feel a whole lot better.

Well my neuro-psyche left this morning after going over the results of my memory deficit problems...
My only comment is to lay of the Pepsi!

And so far, they haven't turned off the hosepipe. I hope their water isn't metered... ?

Very good g23 happens to most of us but you put it brilliantly.

Grandmama Wed 19-Jul-17 19:35:53

Me exactly. I come in from the garden and have done half a dozen jobs, one having led to another, but haven't done the one job I set out to do.

bmteal Wed 19-Jul-17 20:09:31

Absolutely brilliant.!!!?

I'm afraid, diggingdoris, you are not a true sufferer. A true one would start making a list but be distracted before they finish it or forget where they put it or make so many they can't decide which one to follow. I am definitely on the spectrum which is why I can at least appreciate how SiL, who was diagnosed with Adult ADHD aged 35, behaves & views the world. But the difference between him & me is that I can joke about it & he seldom can, especially about the strong meds he has to remember to take daily. Not much fun a lot of the time either for his wife who has to micro-manage him all the time.

That is so me, I start off to do one job & end up doing half a dozen other jobs, I'm easily distracted to say the least. Everything does get done in the end but not in the order I'd plannedgrin

My DH used to say to me "how can you do half a dozen different things at once but you always get everything done?" Been like that all my lifehmm

I've seen that piece before but it still made me laugh

Not me yet, thank goodness. I'm just checking so I can watch for signs,at what age does this set in?

FarNorth Thu 20-Jul-17 10:59:36

It's great on the occasional time when I feel like I've pottered aimlessly all day, then realise I've actually finished several things!

This is more common than you might think - it's what happens when you realise you have 16 things to attend to in just 15 seconds and everything on the list has top priority!

Consequently, nothing gets done.....the story of my life.

I have been like this for years. I say I could procrastinate for England but maybe I simply get distracted all the time. I write lists when things are really busy but then I lose them! I go to deal with email, find an interesting thread on hear then spend the rest of the morning reading threads which don't even interest me!
And I too kept thinking about the hosepipe still running all the way through reading!

here!

now I thought that was growing old.
