Why has my French dressing stopped working?! Is it Brexit?

The last twice I made my normal French dressing (3 parts cold-pressed oil to 1 of cider vinegar, with Dijon mustard and salt) the dreaded stuff just refused to emulsify. No matter what I did, it just stayed drippy and liquid and separated out as soon as I left it for a minute. Why? What's going on? I usually whizz it up with a hand held blender and it emulsifiers and stays that way? Is it me or is this hard Brexit and it's all the gumment's fault?

Sloe gin dressing! Now you're talking! But that might render one unstable, might it not?

The Dijon mustard has not been living in my cupboard for five years because I just had a good clear-out and clean [smug]

ps Only because we had ants shock but it was the glacé cherries they were after, I think they were French too - but the ants were definitely British.

Violette does it come in a jam jar?

Recommended on here first grin

May or mayonnaise?

ça suffit, I'm off for une tasse de thé à l'anglaise.

trisher Mon 03-Jul-17 15:17:14

Perhaps a bit more than May is!!!!

Lillie Mon 03-Jul-17 14:56:21

But is it strong and stable?

trisher Mon 03-Jul-17 14:24:31

It's obviously the Dijon mustard which is worried about its status once we are Brexited. Sorry but you are unlikely to get any better results unless we get some reassurance from Theresa May. Even then it may not qualify for resident's status unless it can produce evidence of where it has been living for the last 5 years.

Don't all throw things at once but I buy my French dressing here (in France) in a jar ......ready made ! turns out wonderful every time ! I also buy Mayonnaise and Heinz Salad cream ....and lots of lovely variations ...........- sacre bleu !! most of my French neighbours buy it in jars as well .....oh and they buy frozen food too , from the freezer delivery van !!!! maybe somewhere, someone doesn't admit to buying jars !!! shock

oldgaijin brilliant idea - I could use the jar I had sloe gin in!

oldgaijin Mon 03-Jul-17 12:42:37

Clean the jam jar first, otherwise you could have straw/rasp/gooseberry flavoured dressing. Mmmmm now that's an idea...a whole new flavour sensation?

Womble54 Mon 03-Jul-17 12:37:32

Merde alors! It's got to be something to do with the Brexit - perhaps you should contact the BBC or the Grauniad?

DanniRae Mon 03-Jul-17 12:27:52

I LOVE salad cream too devongirl!!

JackyB Mon 03-Jul-17 12:11:45

I was going to blame it on the weather, too.

Does an Italian dressing work or does it have the same effect?

Icyalittle Mon 03-Jul-17 12:11:40

devongirl nooooo! At school they forced us to eat gave us beetroot in salad cream. We called it road accident.

Icyalittle Mon 03-Jul-17 12:09:37

Tried putting it in the fridge. Didn't work. All I got was cold yellow runny stuff. Pah.

Jalima1108 Mon 03-Jul-17 11:45:13

perhaps it's the hot weather that those dastardly Continentals sent us recently icyalittle wink

mine emulsified when I put it in the fridge.

Jalima1108 Mon 03-Jul-17 11:43:43

I think this is more of Donald Trump's fake news.

Maybe, maddy629 but fun! Thinking about it, Trump is a yellowy mustard colour himself!! grin

I must speak up for salad cream - wonderful stuff!!

Icyalittle Mon 03-Jul-17 10:52:25

And it never mixed enough to be hard or soft Brexit, it just sat there looking yellow. I don't want it to be runny and yellow, I want it to be thick and unctuous and creamy.

Icyalittle Mon 03-Jul-17 10:50:29

???? shelana Obviously very smiley around your way!
Mawbroon eeurgh, salad cream! That was when the 'good old days' were 'bad old days'.
Btw, I used (and always do) all British ingredients apart from the mustard. Not a jam jar though, do you think this is why? But it has always worked, why not thus time? Why, why? Something's going on #conspiracytheory

Jalima1108 Mon 03-Jul-17 10:44:29

Or lots of smiles shelana grin

What you need is a good old British jam jar (none of yer Bonne Maman or St Dalfour conserve or Lidl specials), the kind we used to tie string round and catch tiddlers in before the H&S forbade children going off to the brook on their own.

Put all the British ingredients into the jam jar and shake for a good five or ten minutes.
Don't forget to put the lid on the jar first!

You could serve it in the jam jar too, as they appear to be very fashionable at the moment.
