Feeling cynical about the election?

Oh! I thought I read that they had done just that!! It was the working class vote that didn't hold up so well.

Corbyn did well where the level of educational attainment was high, and these tend to be middle class folk

Gilly, I so agree, labour did not make inroads into constituencies where voters are middle of the road.

What we need (my opinion only) is a Middle of the road Labour leader (David Milliband where are you?) someone who will lead a Labour Party for all (not just those who are members of "his" precious unions) someone who has the best interest of the whole country at heart.

The referendum, which should never have happened, was conducted disgracefully. We had two sides out on the hustings slinging mud, scaremongering and presenting their personal view. What was needed was a campaign of information, impartial, embracing all views - from economists, social commentators etc. - so that people could make up their own minds about which way to vote.

In fact our sitting MP refused to state his position, but filled his website with information presenting both sides of the argument from erudite experts, so that constituents could make up their own minds. I have never voted for this guy - he is a Tory - but I applaud him for that.

The vote was so tight - if it had been say 80/20 there would be some justification about ploughing on regardless; but the truth is that it was so close that no one party should be taking this forward; there should be a cross-party approach.

And above all else someone with more nous, skills in psychology and negotiation than TM should be leading this delicate negotiation.

... and about 50% of the country don't. So where does that take us. Having read your posts SAAK you certainly do nothing to persuade anyone - you just keep repeating your views. I am not sure that proliferation of prejudice (opinion not based on fact) gets us anywhere other than knowing you hold strong views on this. I think we have got that message.

Correcting spelling and grammar as a response to a post is quite pathetic (unless of course it was done with obvious humor and no offense was meant by it). But just correcting for the sake of it is unnecessary and really quite nasty.

Can GNHQ please put in site guidelines that is extremely unpleasant and upsetting to correct misspellings , poor punctuation and obvious typos.
We are not all perfect and sometimes just want to get our point across, however unpleasing it is to others.
This is not just aimed at this thread but many others as well.

SAAK Brexit was not the main point of this election, even if May wanted it to be. It was welfare, education and the NHS. Labour is becoming a strong party again, under Jeremy Corbyn, get over it.

OK after a disastrous election campaign by Theresa May and her awful manifesto and Corbyns giveaway manifesto which promised anything and everything Labour still couldn't win and lost by 50 odd seats.

SAAK I am a remainer who's voted Labour all her life because I believe in a socialist democracy. I read the Labour Party manifesto - the costed manifesto - before voting. I have accepted we are leaving the EU, so Brexit was not the reason I voted Labour.

I don't believe in the I'm alright Jack or Pull yourself up by your bootstraps attitude I see a lot of on here. The slogan For the many not the few says it all.

Why would I vote for any other party?

Im a working class leaver and voted for the only party which would have got a good deal in the EU. I truly believe that stopping mass free movement is the answer. It would also have given Labour time to become a strong party that I could have once again believed in.

Now, due to impatience on the part of the working class and greed on the part of the affluent it has become a bit of a nightmare.

I am a remainer, I support Labour but voted tactically.

So you disagree that leaving the EU was not in the forefront of all this? I tend to think that remainers chose to vote for Labour as a tactic.

The result of the referendum was insufficient to bring Britain into such disarray. It followed no guide lines and was won on total lies. Is that the sort of vote you are proud to call democracy SAAK - I would be thoroughly disgusted if Remain had won using such tactics.

SAAK It was not a vote to leave the EU! I do not understand why people still think a referendum, in a parliamentary democracy, as we are in UK, is a decider! Different in a plebicite democracy but that is not how it works in UK.

It is to inform the elected MPs of the view of their electorate. There was only 4% in it.. not an overwhelming landslide. They needed to proceed accordingly. I agree if it had been a 25%+ in favour it should have triggered article 50. I would not have liked that but that would have been a clearer mandate than 4%.

Pressure to change certain things in a Manifesto for the good of the working class is one thing but to promise the unattainable is a totally different kettle of fish.
