Whatever happened to...

I still get most pg my clothes from m&s but agree its getting more difficult. Ive tried and tried to get stuff from other shops but rarely find anything i like elsewhere.

My grandma also had a barrow in Leeds market at the same time as M&S were there. Incredible lowly beginnings to what became a household name. Shame their clothes have gone downhill over recent years. Too many ranges, just too much stuff. Always seem to be outdated though bought some uplift jeans this week which definitely improve my low slung bottom.

I'm probably alone in disliking their ready meals. The packaging and description is so tempting .... I'm always disappointed. Yet their food stores flourish so it must be my taste buds ....

I'm off to a local M&S foodstore later to collect two pairs of jeans I bought online at 20% off. Chances are only one of them will fit (if either!), despite both being labelled as the same size and length. If they ever did bring back the St Michael brand, maybe they'd bring back accurate inside length measurements too, to avoid everyone constantly having to return items because they don't fit. And, hopefully, trousers with a waist that actually comes up to the waist.

He was an archangel but don't know the connection with M&S. My friend used to say that St Michael was the patron saint of their house as M&S was her default choice for most things!

I remeber years ago cornering a staff memeber in Marks' food section, lamenting the total lack of a vegetarian dish in the Chinese section - the response was a disgusted "who would want that?!"

Over 50 years I wrote to Marks & Spencer suggesting they start selling Gift Vouchers. They replied saying they didn't consider they would be popular. I wish I'd kept that reply!! (smile)

I have called them M&S for a while but I still call shops Shops. The only one that was a store was the Co.op.

I agree, icanhandthemback...their clothes are grim. What happened to their quality classics?

Think we started calling shops stores around the same time as we started calling all tv programmes 'shows' . Does annoy me.

It doesn't matter what it's called, this season's clothes are horrible. I am, once again, disappointed with their range. Grannypiper, we call it Marksies

I think it was when we no longer had shopkeepers. A store manager is not the same thing:-)

I always thought that they used the name St Michael to hide the fact that they were a Jewish company (were they?).

We always called the village shop "the store" back in the 50s when I was growing up.

I have had blouse seams that came apart on first wearing, garments that twist out of shape on washing and I had a sheet that pilled and became see-through after one wash. Have you ever noticed the smell of the dressing on the fabric, yuck.

Well someone (sorry, can't remember who) on this forum very recently was complaining about some M&S sheets which hadn't even lasted 6 months - she did obtain a refund with no fuss, but even so...

I still find M and S clothes of very good quality harrigran. I really can't remember ever having to return any item of clothing because it wasn't up to scratch!

St Michael disappeared when they had the clothes manufactured in far flung corners of the world. St Michael was the patron saint of quality which is no longer associated with M&S.

My son worked McDonald's in the late 90's and into this century and always used the word store
I thought it a bit posh at the time but guess it's an Americanism
