Should I buy the extra insurance.?

OK! We have had 2 'free' tvs, a washer and a dishwasher by buying the extended warranties so consider we are winning.

Don't buy appliance insurance. When we moved into our current home we did a massive rebuild/refurb and had new kitchen appliances, boiler etc. If we had taken out the suggested insurances we would be paying out hundreds of pounds a month.Five years later on, if we have to replace anything ( fingers crossed, nothing so far) we will still be in credit by many hundreds of pounds. These insurances will soon go the way of PPI I think,

Definitely do not. Just 'self insure' i.e. squirrel away a bit in a separate bank/savings account regularly. That's how we have always done it for large appliances. These people will sound very persuasive.....they get commission!

It is a question of averaging over lifetime. If we had bought the extra insurance every time we bought a new appliance we would have shelled out thousands of pounds over the last 50 years. It is worth taking the risk of the occasional repair or replacement bill. You will spend so much less than if you keep taking out these warranties.

It has got 3 years brand warranty included already I notice - that is very good and more than enough.
You would be paying for a 4 year warranty for 1 year extra!

DH says that, if fridges and freezers are likely to go wrong it is usually in the first year when they are under guarantee anyway. That is because there could be a fault with that particular item but generally they don't have that much to go wrong and should go on for years.
The salad boxes often break, even on a more expensive model, and this is not covered by the warranty or extended warranty anyway.

Having said that I will probably find mine has gone kaput when I go and look!

Fridgefreezers, unless they are the fancy ones that need to be plumbed in, seem to go on forever. We still have a back-up for busy times FF in the garage which we bought in 1991.

I would personally not bother when we moved into our aprtment nearly 10yrs ago we bought a second hand fridge/freezer and have just moved it with us to our new bungalow we have never had a problem with it and has been the best £60 we have ever spent,you could end up paying more in premiums than the cost of a replacement.

I never take insurance on electrical goods ,the cost over 4 or 5 years is often enough to replace them so just stick that amount in a jar.Our FF looked really sick the christams before last and we wanted to make sure we had a working one for the holidays so bought one online.Lo and behold the sick one started working again so we phoned and cancelled the new one ,our old one is still working fine.The people we had ordered the new one from said they would hold the price of it for 6 months so we could go back and get it at no extra cost.Very kind of them I thought .

No. I have been plagued by offers of insurance following the purchase of a washing machine. In the end I snapped and was rude to the caller.

Ana, I agree, I thought I was just ringing to 'register', appliance, it was more about selling insurance, almost a "cold call", that I had prompted, the lady also tried to sell cover for dishwasher(different make), that is 2.5 years old & now out of warranty.!!

Check your house contents insurance. Freezer breakdown may well end covered.

The verry pleasant lady is probably on commission to sell these extra insurance packages!

There was a brief period where you could do this with Curry's and if you hadn't claimed by the 10th anniversary you could get the insurance premiums back. Of course there were all sorts of things to ensure that most people would never be able to do it, including keeping all the documentation and receipts, but I was determined to keep them to their promise, and ultimately succeeded. I don't know how many other people did, but I notice there are no assurances like that any more!
