How do you sit.

I was reading in a novel about being judged old by the way you sit. Apparently, to sit with your ankles crossed, with hands resting on knees is the default position of a pensioner!
To look youthful, cross your legs high up or lie full-length on the sofa (that's me) or? You tell me.

No don't cross legs or ankles. My doctor told me to put my feet up when I sit down, so I have a foot rest.
The only thing that's crossed is my eyes. Ha ha

never cross my legs or ankles. usually just sit on the settee [or dining room chair] with my feet flat on the floor.
never do my arms/hands go on my knees as they're usually busy. at the dining table i'm eating, at the desk i'm typing on my desktop and on the settee i'm usually using one hand to play a game on my laptop while the other just rests wherever.
so i'm probably not a typical pensioner [oh how i hate that word!!].

I'm envious of anyone who can sprawl - I have to use a Backfriend wherever I go or my back is likely to go into a painful spasm. That isn't even since I've become old (62), I've had to use one for years.

I always sat with legs crossed til told it causes probs with circulation. I now always curl up on sofa which is prob just as bad.

gillybob Mon 08-May-17 14:13:41 I used to sit like that as a kid, probably till I started wearing stockings and tight skirts grin Couldn't get into the position now, my hips would scream.

Back surgery means I have a special chair for computer, a footrest to keep pressure off backs of thighs, and a battery powered shiatsu massager to get my neck and back sorted when spending any length of time working. Bedtime is on a memory foam topper on a new mattress that cost way too much in my opinion, but DH thinks it's great, and my hips and back are happier in the morning.

It depends what kind of chair I am sitting on and what I am doing.

I am currently sitting at my desk on an office chair and with a foot rest; my left foot is squarely on the foot rest and the leg forms a right angle at knee and hip; my right leg is slumped to the right and the ankle ankle is across and resting on my left foot, near the toes.

I cannot think of any occasion when I would sit with my hands on my knees, like toddlers told to sit still and not wriggle

I usually sit on a dining chair to eat, use laptop, read newspaper, do crossword & sudoku. I find a hard chair more comfortable for my back, I sit with legs together, feet on the ground (occasionaly one leg stretched out)

If I sit on my sofa I have a couple of cushions behind me, legs straight out. I don't sit on the sofa often although it is very comfortable I find it hard to stand up, I'm not old, only 61hmm
