Classic mid-life crisis cliches - what have you done??!!

Hello, just wondering what we have all inadvertently succumbed to, that in hindsight could be very much filed under the heading of mid life crisis. For myself, having toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo, learning to play the drums, (did neither) I joined the local WI, and the local Canoe club and splashed out on some Invisalign braces to give me the Hollywood smile I have always dreamed of. If I could only afford the convertible white Audi I'd be truly content!! I used to have regular gel nails but my love for gardening (another cliche I know) has meant that its a waste of money as I am incapable of religiously wearing gardening gloves.

I come from a broken home and had to leave school at 15 even though I wanted to go to university. In my 20s I split from my DH and gained my 'o' and 'a' levels at evening classes, then started a university degree. After a few years apart we got back together again and he said 'you can give up this malarkey and get a proper job', so I did and regretted it ever after.

In my 50s after seeing our two children through university I went back for 5 years and gained a BA Hons then MA and taught undergrads and post grads for the few years before I retired at 62. Taking those degrees was the best thing I have ever done (except for having two wonderful and supportive children....... well they might read this post! ). My DH was not happy about me spending the time and money, but by then I had found my voice.

If that was a midlife crisis I should live to 110!

Is 69 too old for a mid life crisis? I think it probably is! Like several other posters, my life has been one long crisis and doesn't look likely to change any time soon.
If I had time for a MLC, I think I would travel - I never have and it sounds lovely! smile

Had to give up the beloved HRT as I had breast cancer. Now having hot flushes at 73 so perhaps I'll have a mid-life crisis as well.

I did my first abseil at 65, and this year I took part in a Viking re-enactment that involved spending five nights in a wattle & daub hut. I've also joined a dating site, but at 68 my chances seem pretty remote. A good supply of HRT keeps me feeling young, so what next?

I'm 62 next month....am I allowed a mid life crisis? Hubby insisted I have the gorgeous convertible..he still works and we use it weekends, I use it during the week. I'm engaged with four different groups as a volunteer...two involving sewing....did think of dyeing my hair a radical colour but....what the heck. I'm just on the boat sailing along the river of.......if I'm happy I stay with it......if I'm not.....on to the next river or vessel. Happiness is my goal.

MawBroon, I do agree about the guarantees; we bought some new interior door handles which, curiously, had a 25 year guarantee, and we both realised at the same moment that we would almost certainly be pushing up the daisies by the time the guarantee runs out!

As for a mid life crisis - I think my entire life has been some sort of minor crisis until I reached around sixty, so I'm just grateful to be alive and to be enjoying (relative) peace.

To slightly misquote Marine Faithfull: "At the age of 47, I thought that it was heaven, to drive through California in a sports car, with the warm wind in my hair...." (OK I'm 66 now, but you did say "mid-life".) At 65 we did a round-the-world-trip. Fantastic, and so glad I did as I now have problematic back trouble.

Well absent I think you might feel, like me, that as you get older the slings and arrows of life stop being crisis.
After my beloved husband died very traumatically and suddenly three years ago I've become almost inviincible. The worst thing that could happen has happened so I'm saying yes to every opportunity that comes my way.
In March I went indoor skydiving with others from my 'growing old disgracefully' group and Arlene Phillips, you may have seen us on telly.
Next month I'm replicating the trip I did in 1967 when a friend and I back packed across Europe to what was then Yugoslavia and back. Not hitchhiking this time though, we thought we wouldn't get quite so many lifts at 69 as we did at 19.
My DH was dead at 64, I have a lot of living to do on his behalf.

No, I am on the HRT and it's kept the mid life mads away so far. In fact, if anything I have become more risk averse and have jettisoned many things which cause me stress. Life is pretty blissful. They will have to pull the HRT away from my hot, sticky grip with wild horses!

I think it's just been one long crisis and will probably continue that way to the grave. grin

Jalima1108 Sat 06-May-17 23:44:49

Well, I think the average life-span for a woman is about 82 so mid-life would be 41
I have missed it by a few years!

rosesarered Sat 06-May-17 23:27:32

Haha!

Well, I always thought it was between 45 and 55 sort of thing, so too late for me now to have one ( I miss everything!) angry

Jalima1108 Sat 06-May-17 21:08:01

Unless you have aspirations to become leader of a political party

Sorry, sorry, sorry, keep politics off this thread.

And when is 'mid-life' anyway?

rosesarered Sat 06-May-17 20:55:51

Nothing wrong with being an old rebel! grin

stillaliveandkicking Sat 06-May-17 20:52:38

I had and still have a few "hot" moments but apart from that it's been more of a blessing than a curse. Have to say I don't want to get old as none of us do, seems like we spend more years middle aged and beyond now so will probably do the old age one too roses grin

rosesarered Sat 06-May-17 20:47:52

Agree with you on that stillalive...... periods ( shudder) although the menopause was ok for me.

Am still waiting for a mid life crisis, but it had better come along soon as I will be into an old age crisis otherwise.grin

gettingonabit Sat 06-May-17 18:05:25

I bought a house as a Buy to Let. I don't know what came over mesad. However it's worked out ok so far. Touch wood.

stillaliveandkicking Sat 06-May-17 17:45:20

Haven't had one myself. Love having gone through the Menopause though, no more yucky periods and no more horrendous PMT, life's now a breeze in that respect.
Mind you I'm back on the dating scene at nearly 55 which is pretty "interesting" smile

kezia Sat 06-May-17 09:55:11

Doc?! DGC obviously :-)

kezia Sat 06-May-17 09:54:14

I bought a little green two seater soft top car - 14 years old and totally impractical. No space for the doc.
I love it

Jalima1108 Sat 06-May-17 09:37:14

MawBroon lol

My mid-life crisis was to do a bungee jump.

But the moment passed many years ago.

MawBroon Sat 06-May-17 09:33:06

If I were experiencing a mid-life crisis, would that mean I could look forward to another 69 years? confused
I even realised yesterday that the "20 year guarantee" on my new springform cake tin was likely to "see me out" sad

hildajenniJ Sat 06-May-17 09:30:52

Never felt the need for a mid life crisis. There are lots of things I would like to do though, learning to play the piano being one. Can't afford a piano though, and finding a good teacher is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Anya Sat 06-May-17 08:46:15

Blimey GP your only 2 years older than my daughter. Far too young to have crisis. You're not allowed one yet!

grannypiper Sat 06-May-17 08:05:33

I am still waiting for that mid life crisis but as i am 48 i have enough time to make a fool think of one
