As my partner is soon going to be departing his filthy room and the ceiling and walls are almost brown with nicotine. He wouldn't let me decorate his room but I usually emulsion everywhere else in the house once a year. I can't face having to sugar soap the ceiling as I get dizzy. Could I maybe seal it with gloss paint first??

wot Thu 04-May-17 20:27:27

I'm not fussy!

Jalima1108 Thu 04-May-17 20:46:18

No, not gloss - you have to sand it down before it will take another coat of anything!

Just sugar soap if you can and emulsion, emulsion, emulsion.
You could get a nice 'young man' in to do it.
Otherwise getting it skimmed might be the answer.

As for chopping off the hair - don't choose someone who does it with a knife and fork (what was my hairdresser thinking of last time she cut it!)

But I'm not going down that road.

That way madness lies. I am going to be an old maid and wear purple.

Forensic gear?grin that bad huh?

phoenix Fri 05-May-17 14:17:44

You could try a coat of Unibond, yes, I know it's sort of glue, but you can use it a a sealant, have a look at the instructions on the tin.

You dilute it then paint it on.

But wot may stick herself to the ceiling ( like in 'when Father papered the parlour') shock

Has him indoors actually moved out? If so, please change the locks.

grannypiper Fri 05-May-17 16:05:38

wot unless you clean it with sugar soap then vinegar then hot water before painting it will always smell of smoke. There is no point in wasting paint.Cover your carpet and furniture then use a flat sponge mop (the old type you squeeze the water out by using a lever), it is a pain but worth it. Dont forget to clean the electric wire on the ceiling light ( turn the electricity off at mains of course) also the curtain pole and curtain rings or hooks will smell too. It is a lot of work but its the only way to be smoke free. Goodluck wine

wot Fri 05-May-17 17:49:18

No, he hasn't moved out yet or even packed/sorted anything. Chaotic as usual. I am preparing myself by making up a budget and a list of things I want to get done to make the cottage nice again. (And put on the market) it keeps me occupied!! I had a row with his daughter last night as I do have an anger about it all even though it could be forff the best. I would still like to move to Hull. I saw a house on line next to a shop, open 7 to 11 ha haha better than having to drive five miles for a pint o milk.

wot Fri 05-May-17 17:49:54

And I've ordered a ton of Stain Stop

wot Fri 05-May-17 17:50:24

I meant a tin, not a ton!

rosesarered Fri 05-May-17 20:55:04

Sounds like a plan!

phoenix Fri 05-May-17 22:12:04

As people who gave up smoking just over a year ago (pat on the back emoticon) its quite amazing, and horrifying, how the smoke smell gets everywhere and lingers!

I opened the built in wardrobe in the spare room, no one has ever smoked in that room, btw, and every item in there had a distinct smell of cigarettes blushsad

wot Fri 05-May-17 23:07:18

And brown down the sleeves. I'm hoping that I won't have to emulsion the whole house every year from now on. I don't think I can manage the stairwell anymore.it's now just the long it's the yellowing of walls and ceilings perhaps it's just me being picky.

My sister bought a bungalow from an old chain smoker and had to have the whole place replastered, new bathroom , kitchen the lot. They did intend to do this anyway, but it would have been inhabitable without.

wot Sat 06-May-17 10:45:30

Oh dear! I will either have to stay here or find a chain smoking buyer.??
