Did you all realize that Cadbury now use Halal Gelatin, and we all i am sure know how an animal is slaughtered to enable it to classed as Halal !!

Is there any reference to hunting for chocolate eggs in the Bible?

I'm surprised by Theresa May's reaction. I know she's a Christian and obviously the Christian celebration of Easter will be important to her, but there's no reason why people who aren't Christians can't celebrate Easter in a non-Christian way, e.g. by going on hunts for chocolate eggs. Oestre, from which the modern name derives, existed before Christian Easter.

Also, why shouldn't a chocolate manufacturer leave out mention of the religious part of the festival? Cadbury's hasn't set itself up as a Christian company, has it? Not mentioning a religion is not discriminatory. Christianity does not own Easter any more than it owns Christmas, even though the Church has, historically, purloined those festivals.

Don't think the Natioonal Trust is specifically Christian either.

I've no objection to Christmas being called Christmas, jalima. I just don't accept that it's only a Christian festival. It's Christian for Christians and not Christian for non-Christians. I can't see why anyone would have a problem with that.

Likewise Easter.

And, as I said, Oestre existed before Christianity. Bunnies and eggs were always part of British Spring festivities long before Christianity got here.

Actually, I'm not sure about the bunnies. Baby hares and other animals though.

I didn't know that. Never heard that before. Learn every day, etc.

It seems that if something is Christian or English it is OK to change it, anyone raising even the smallest objection is "silly". I don't think any Christian is really concerned about what Cadbury choose to call their chocolate eggs although, of course, they are being sold on the back of the Easter celebration. (I don't know anyone who celebrates the Oestre festival - although I accept there may be a few pagans out there who do)

I think it started centuries ago with tales of the Easter bunny laying eggs around the garden.

However, that tall tale wouldn't wash with today's savvy children - bunnies laying eggs, don't be silly! - so he just hides them in the garden (or in the house if it's raining).

What a strange question sunseeker. I am not the one claiming chocolate eggs may only be called Easter Eggs.

My DiLs family are Muslim. They all give each other Easter eggs. DiL take her mother out on Mothering Sunday and they come to us for Christmas !!!

GGM2 but you are implying that those raising, very slight, objections will not be in church. So how do you know how many people go to church. May I suggest you go along to a church on Easter Sunday and have a look through the doors.

I don't celebrate Oestre in any particular way but I think my Spring enjoyments of things like chocolate eggs and simnel cake are just that, a human celebration of Nature. Christianity can't take this away from me however much they'd like to. Actually, I'm not sure most Christians would like to. Why would they want to ban something that does no-one and no religion any harm whatsoever?

Easter is the time when you will see more people in churches than at any other time. At least that's what my parents (both Christians) used to say, because believing in the resurrection of Christ is the most important tenet of Chritian faith.

thatbags I don't think any Christian would want to take away your celebration of Spring, just as we believe in the resurrection of Christ so Spring reflects the resurrection of nature. Enjoy your chocolate eggs and simnel cake!

If we are talking about the hen's eggs sized chocolate with fondant inside sort then as far as I am aware they have always been called Cadbury's Creme Eggs and been sold all year round. I never liked them - too sickly sweet - and stopped buying them for DH and DGC when they shifted production of the fondant (made as a bi-product of the Whisky industry) away from the distillery/yeast factory in our village.

Our non-religious family will receive a gift of spring clothing and a small chocolate egg each, roll painted hen's eggs down the garden, then go to the village centre to race Ducks down the burn. That's our tradition.

Nowhere, but nowhere, are Easter Eggs or the Easter Bunny mentioned in the bible
That's another illusion shattered then, especially Easter Bunny.
(You'll be telling me the Tooth Fairy isn't true either next. )
